Thanks for doing this! Can I ask about the method you used to identify the workflow, did you reverse engineer completely or did you have reference material available?

@@fracturedfantasy A short post (unreal forums) by someone whos name, I sadly can not remember and a desire to overcome the removal of the Retargeting Manager.

It's really crazy to deprecate the old retargeting manager with a new one without documentation! It's also absurd that you have to create bone chains for every skeleton, while the "metahuman rig" was working just fine for the most of cases (at least they could give you the opportunity to create a preset). This is literally the only video that explains how to do it, so, thank you infinitely!

Honestly, I started off skeptical but now I really like it. Once setup, it makes retargeting between all different types of skeletons a breeze.

@@Jobutsu yeah it's kinda cool, especially the possibility to easily adjust the pose without a 3D editing software, finally I can remap fingers decently 🤣

Thanks, it is crazy to me that the old retargeting functionality would be depreciated and replaced without any documentation. It would have made more sense to keep the old process along side this new one.

Good news! I submitted a fix for the crash displayed at the end of this video. It will make it into Unreal 5.0. Appreciate bringing it to my attention. Also, official documentation is coming which should clarify a lot of the options and features in this toolset and hopefully make it clearer why we are moving in this direction.

Thanks for this video. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to retarget animations to a Daz character I brought into Unreal 5.0 and none of the tutorials or documentation I had come across worked. I just need to add a little more detailed retargeting but at least now I know what to do.

I am trying to put together a better Daz retargeting tutorial than this, now UE5 has been released. Daz Characters have proven very hard to work with, when trying to find an IKRig that works with all types of retargeting.

@@Jobutsu I agree. It's pretty easy to get the characters and materials into unreal now but the skeletons/animations can drive you mad trying to catch everything in the retargeting process. The Daz to Unreal bridge has come a long way but I really wish either Daz or Unreal would create a more straightforward solution to retargeting between the two.

You can of course use freely available scripts to change the daz Skeleton into a UE one, it fixes loads of issues but then you can not use Daz Animations in the engine.

@@Jobutsu Just some more details I noticed. After a lot of playing around I think the biggest issue is that the default starting pose of the Daz exported characters are different than the Unreal Skeleton. The elbows and fingers on the female manequin in unreal 5 are more bent in the starting pose. The arms and the legs are also spread wider on genesis. You can fix the arms and legs pretty easily by clicking the edit pose button but the fingers are too cluttered with bone widgets to even see them. I'm going to search for the script you are talking about and try that route.

Adjust the bone "draw" widget size in the details panel to see the fingers. DazToUnreal comes with a pose asset in its plugins folder. There is a way to make that the reference pose on import but that is too much for a KZbin comments sections.

Thank you for this video! Have a question about your setup in u5, are you using the block-out plugin tool or is the environment you're using already inside of u5? (basic shapes with visible unwrap)

i tried this new retargeting way but apparently root motion didn't retarget at all.

Make sure no pelvis, hip, or root chains exist in the IKRig.

Unreal Engine crashes for me whenever i reach the step "export selected animations" and click that select Metahumans > Animation as target. then Unreal just dies and it's unclear why but it very consistently happens at that exact step. this after my retargeter looks to be retargeting to the preview mesh wonderfully. anyone have solve for this issue?

@@Jobutsu Thanks for the reply, I assum the crash was UE didn't like over writing the aniamtions you had done. Do you by chance own the Humanbase asset by Quang Phan, I'd love to see how his Female animations work out with this

Retarget Manager moved to Window - Retarget Sources. Tab was hidden.
