Nate. I've been listening to you for over six months now and your advice has paid off... literally. I was growing well. The first week of November, I was at 2,250 subs and averaged about 200-500 views per video. I was feeling pretty good. I had 1,600(roughly) watch hours and thought hey, I could get fully monetized by Spring. Well, one video changed everything. I posted on November 11th and it has over 260K views and I gained almost 20k subs just in November. I was monetized in a week LOL. Now, I'm averaging 800-1000 subs per day because of the snowball effect. I'm keeping things simple and not planning too hard or doing unnecessary videos. Thank you. For everything.

Probably the best advice i have seen on any of these how to grow your channel videos is the avoiding the short term actions unless of course you have no intent to make the videos you want, you just want to make videos people would watch. If you do that though you are just signing up for another 9-5 job and will miss out on how amazing youtube can be as a "job"

You hit the nail on the head about fear. I started my channel simply because it was on my Bucket List. Making money or tons of viewers was not the main goal and yet there was hesitancy as I didn’t want to look stupid to the world. Regardless, I tossed the fear factor aside and just started enjoying the process.

I spent a few years ahead of stepping forward with content creation fixing my issue of avoiding finishing things. From personal projects to hobbies, video games and even finishing tv shows - I realized I had a massive issue of stopping part-way. It was so many half-done things piled up over time, it felt like I had built up a bad karmic groove for always stopping partway. So, I focused several years on being better at doing and completing things while also getting fully clear on what I wanted to do with content creation. I knew this would ensure I built up a lot of reps of finishing small things, and also larger things, so I was in the groove of doing and completing before committing to starting content creation, and also that I was so clear and excited about my vision for it, that it would carry me through. I really like your last point, Nate! I think maybe my approach was a little extreme, but I wanted to be fully sure I would be in the right groove of being a doer and not just a dreamer, and one that was good at finishing tasks before committing completely. That last point, made a lot of sense to me and felt a bit along that line of radically committing to something and deciding to do all it takes, so it doesn't matter how long it takes to come to fruition. I know Pixar was 7 years of hard work before becoming an 'overnight success'. It can take a lot longer to get to our goals than folks realize! But, it is still worth doing, so you got to be rooted in something deeper.

wow thanks!! Great tips for 2024. I started in 2018, tried different channels for different niches that I was interested in. After a convo with a friend I started a new channel in June or July, posted a couple test vids, nothing. In late Oct or Nov I got serious about creating content and posting on a schedule (3 times a week) and in a month I went from 0 to monetized. Mostly because I hit on a topic in my niche people often ask me about IRL so I decided to cover that topic as it's in my lane. To say I was shocked is an understatement. gimmicks, stay in my lane/ niche, stay on topic, stay focused on providing good information (if the content is good for the audience it's good for me), I don't do trends

I only watch YT but I’m so tired of wordy intros that end with “so without further ado, let’s jump right into it!” Then they repeat what they’re going to do again. The other thing ppl do is talk in a fake, newscaster-like deliberate staccato cadence at the end of each idea where they say each. Word. With. A. Pause. It’s probably hard not to do when you’re trying to sound legit but once it starts it’s difficult to *not* hear. It makes it hard to absorb the actual message that usually could have taken 30 secs when having to suffer through yt’ers acting out the message like a talk show host instead of just saying it like they’re talking to a friend. But these are just pet peeves bc I love what yt’ers do and am grateful to them for the content! 💗

Great video, Nate. In line with a lot of your points, I think there's a real trap in creators wanting to go viral and "blowing up". In my opinion, it's neither realistic to aim for this (too many unpredictable variables), nor is it sustainable. It's much better to go for consistent, steady growth by creating high-quality, focused content. That way, subscribers and viewers who eventually find you can enjoy the library of content you've already produced, instead of having to wade through your previous failed attempts at going viral. In addition, steady growth means you won't be overwhelmed by a sudden influx of (potentially temporary) fans who have too much sway over your decisions before ultimately leaving.

I lost over 40 subs last week and this keeps going on up/down with subs, I was gonna throw the towel in,but i sat back for 3 days and watch my videos and see the views kept on growing,and i realized thats what i did it all for , I love to cook and wanted to share it,and so to sppeed this up. So glad that I have "permission" to stop the KZbin shorts. I just am not a shorts creator. I decided to stop when I released a really slick two part clinical diagnosis (part one being the set up and part two being the payoff) only to have someone tell me that "I could make a video longer than 30 seconds" and shouldn't have broken it into two parts. In reality, each short was maxxed out at 60 seconds.

As a small creator, I absolutely relate to that last point 😅 I've been going back and forth about whether I should stick to my current style (more editing, fully scripted) to one that's more authentic (less editing and scripting). I want my videos to connect with people and feel more “down to earth”, but I’m not sure if I’ll end up alienating my current audience or just having those videos fail completely. I might just be scared about getting outside of my comfort zone (especially when it comes to improv-ing since I’m not the most concise speaker), but I really want to try to move to this style in 2024-my goal is to make my videos feel more like “hangout sessions” rather than “just videos”. Your transition that you would like to do doesn't have to a sudden change. Sprinkle the new format into your publishing - do some testing. Or you could go about it as "you do you." I think people enjoy authenticity and I personally seem to get turned away from more of the staged production.

The tip about starting the video like it would be in the middle is great. I have been trying it few times and it’s working well. I make travel video and instead of beginning with “hey guys welcome to country x”, i rather show some clips of the most iconic places, topic or funny moments (without revealing too much) before the intro.

This video resonated with me since I recently did a huge overhaul of my channel and my content. I had one breakout video that was ranking in search, but bringing in the wrong audience. It was painful removing that video, but I knew it wasn't going to benefit my target audience or my journey overall. For anyone that's starting their youtube channel, I just started with videos that were 'easy' to make. I've learned so much over the last year, but most of it I'm trashing because they're so awful and not the direction I want to head, but I learned not only 'just start', but so many skills from just 'doing'. Your 1/4 time point is a big one! I often finish a video and then save a copy to edit down for shorts. As I try to edit a 'thought' to fit under a minute, I find lots of fat to trim. LOTS OF FAT. If I consciously do this BEFORE releasing the long video, I can usually go back and tighten it up and have a better product.

I can attest to using shorts. I made a few, got some subs, did nothing for my channel. Now I just stick to mostly long form. I am trying to improve my thumbs and titles which is hard because I cannot script most of my content due to the nature of my vids(funny skits aside). Trying to break the mold of the average outdoor channel is a challenge but fun and I receive mostly positive feedback, so I will keep focusing on the long term audience that enjoys the style I am still perfecting. Great video Nate! Much of my focus is turning toward 2024 so your next video is very timely. We have two videos left to produce and publish this year. December is always a challenge because of its inherent “distractions”. Taking time to be with family & friends and to celebrate the holidays becomes more of a priority this time of year. That is why I adjust my publishing schedule to accommodate for the end of the year. Having a lighter schedule in December also allows time to strategize and plan out the new year.

Definitely cutting videos shorter, with time and experience and taking some rest times between editing, I find I've gotten quite good at trimming the fat. Been keeping tabs also on a google sheets to of my raw video VS final edit to see where I can cut, I see myself repeating, going off on tangents, I'm taking more time on scripting and a practice run before filming, etc.

I like this form of education. Not focusing on only what to do but focusing on the things to avoid. While pointing people in the right direction. I have been on my KZbin journey off and on for a good 8 years now and really most of it was me planning learning and sitting around without posting. Tbh my biggest take away from my journey is. No one will see your content if you never make it. Taking the first step is the biggest step. Back to what I was saying about your video. This genuinely helps me understand what direction to go without the guess work of what should and should not be done. A lot of video's tell you all you need to know and the best things to do (this is really good) but you can still very well fall into the traps that you pointed out in this video. Great video thank you for the knowledge and being such a great teacher. :)

You know what I found to be the hardest part of KZbin? Finding people I vibe with to grow together. I’ve spent the last 3 days hunting for channel in the 1-50k subs range, and reaching out to people - but even though I get responses, I can just tell that they’re “not in the weeds.” On this stuff like I am and the convo lasts 2-3 messages. I have all the knowledge I need to just grow on YT, but it’s a lonely place to grow alone. I want to collab offline with other creators about thumbnails titles goals and ideas. Paid communities often really suck at this - I’ve partaked in a few for various interests in my life. They’re often “forced cohorts” and connections aren’t natural. Maybe I should start clicking on channels that leave comments here because I know they at least have interest in this sort of dedication.

I agree! I'm not claiming I'm the best, but I don't think I've ever struggled with ideas, thumbnails, editing, anything as much as trying to find creator friends to talk with. It's easy enough to find new ways to edit or draft scripts, but so difficult to find fellow creators to chat with.

@NomadOverNormal Chris, You are searching for feedback from a community of strangers while ignoring the fact that you have a community of 2,000+ people who like you and your content so much they already told KZbin to let them know when you publish more content! Use your community tab to ask your existing audience for feedback on some things. A few might respond because they have a connection with you. One or two of them might be a good fit. At least you will receive feedback from the very people who are interested in your content. I am willing to share additional feedback. But you do not have an email address listed for your channel. if you respond with an email address, I will try to send you some more of my thoughts.

Hey what’s up! When I make a video now I can’t help but think of a movie trailer. When you see a trailer they are action packing a 2 or 3 hour movie into 60 seconds. Just like a KZbin short. I make a decision on if I’m going to invest time & money on a movie off of the trailer alone. Well our channels work the same way. When I click on a video of yours. Are you boring me with an intro to like , share , & sub. Or did you give me a “teaser” of what to expect? I recently started doing this in my videos. And I can see a difference in engagement!

Most of my content is building houses in video games (thrilling, I know). I stopped opening on an empty lot and started showing the final build at the beginning of the video so people know immediately what the outcome will be, and that helped with retention as well as the apparent professionalism. I know showing the end result isn't the best choice for every channel, but it worked for me because so much of what I do is tutorial based.

How does the "start in the middle" manifest in the video? I'm kind of having trouble wrapping my head around that concept

One good example I found was Think Media's video "50+ EASY KZbin VIDEO IDEAS That Will BLOW UP Your Channel in 2023!" The video doesn't have an intro--it starts with the first tip and continues from there. I think this is what Nate meant by "starting in the middle"--instead of a formal intro, just start with the content that people came for. I've been trying to experiment with this in my own videos, but it's surprisingly challenging--I almost feel like I HAVE to start with something to ease people into the video, but I've often found the videos that have the most engaging intros are the ones that immediately deliver on their promise. Hope this helps :)

And inspired by "don't make smart thumbs" I'd like to add sth I heard which I consider is the best advice in general for KZbinrs: don't be smart, be clear and precise instead.

This is such a refreshing video! What about quality VS quantity? A lot of people are saying we need to upload weekly but it's hard to measure how impactful that is when trading off with quality.

The starting in the middle is probably the most valuable thing I pulled from this. As a farm channel the intro and build up can be pretty boring. Showing scenes closer to the climax of the video up front would probably grab attention a little faster and increase their chances of sticking around to see how I got there.

@SR_Rayan, KZbin is advanced in this area. People can use a device called screen reader that changes text into speech and a blind person can reply via voice text. They scroll over the screen with their finger and it reads the text out loud (very similar to if you ask the computer to read an article out loud - it can convert that into voice). The finger acts as an eye similar to braille but instead of feeling the text they hear it. I don’t work for YT - I’ve just seen this used before.
