The manual seats make complete sense. It's way lighter and that's a big goal of the i3. Also, I think the last time I adjusted the seat in my current car was years ago. People don't adjust their seats often enough to need power seats.

Hey FYI its NOT just "Recycled Carbon". Its the FIRST series production car (under 100k) to have a passenger cell that is completely Carbon Fiber aka CFRP similar to F1 race cars. Pretty revolutionary. Nice video! Pretty detailed.

Cockpit and doors is not carbon fiber, is Kenaf fiber. The passenger cell is not the carbon fiber you found in the chasis of a Mclaren or Lambo, and less from a Formula 1. Its carbon fiber reinforced with plastic, but very nice anyway.

I have a 2014 Rex model. Fully loaded. This car is so addictive. I actually kinda need a bigger car, at the moment - 2 kids and just the need for transporting bigger items, but I just can't seem to part ways with my i3. The instant power/acceleration translates into responsiveness - which every car enthusiast can appreciate. Packaged with that is the excellent materials, infotainment system, exquisite look, and prestige of the BMW brand. I enjoy not having to worry about gas, unless I am going on longer journeys...but for my everyday/weekly trips, this thing is perfect. I am trying to hold out for Hyundai's Electric Kona, as I need space, but don't want to go back to a combustion-engine vehicle, again. The only problem is....I don't think the Hyundai will be as fun to drive (it will probably be FWD-only, and handle like a sponge), nor do I think it will have the build quality or precision of the BMW i3. I guess I'll enjoy it while it lasts. Eventually, I'll have to move on :~(

At first I thought the manual seats were a crazy idea, but after test driving this car, I think they're very good. The whole assembly is surely lighter and less complicated, and the seats can be adjusted almost instantly, compared to power seats which can be quite slow. For a city car that might get used by different people in the same day, this might be more practical. The i3 is a popular car for ride sharing services, so simpler might be better. That could have been part of their thinking. I've always had power seats in my cars, but my perspective has shifted. (My 2015 Rex Tera is being delivered next week.)

Nice review. Ive had my 2014 i3 rex for 14 months. Paid 20k for it used- has 48k miles now. Funnest car i ever had. There is value in that. Range is low about 50-70 miles depending on ac heat usage. This low electric range fulfills 90percent of my daily driving needs with rex motor if needed with unlimited gasoline range. This been to the dealer 4 times fixing fuel injectors, audio amp all under warranty and front electric panel that houses fan blower motor- totaling about $5,000 in repairs. I worry what it will cost me when warranty ends next month. Bmw charges $185/hr. Running great now.

After 4 years, they finally restored the full power that was designed-in from the onset... but was reduced just prior to production due to some possible drivetrain wear. It will be interesting to see if the electric motor controller code can be transferred to the non-S models... as well as previous years. Hackers and Tuners... are you listening? Rent this, copy code, transplant!

i3 is just too expensive. In US its in same price bracket as tesla model 3 and as such can't hope to win. Here in UK the model 3 is still a distant pipe dream (I wonder if it will ever show up) and i3 was the best EV I could get my hands on last year . I paid approx $26K (£20K) for a less than 1 year old i3 with full warranty from a BMW dealer and with only 6,00 miles driven on clock. Since workplace has free charger I haven't paid any £2000 for fuel I would have used up since purchasing in 2018 .. . so big bonus. If it lasts 8 more years without excessive maintenance or repair costs it would then be essentially a free car compared with the fuel I would have saved on in sticking with an ICE car . So in that sense a very big winner.

Yeah, but remember BMW is the king of the lease. So many people buying new are not cross shopping Tesla with $50K in their pocket. They are going to lease. Or maybe finance. And there are often manufacturer incentives which radically decide what you'd actually pay for the vehicle. Then, used, they are a total bargain after 2-3 years. Tesla is still so hot these days, I feel they don't need to offer much in the way of incentives to sell them, so unless you're a cash buying, they seem to price out higher than BMW.

I’ve owned two i3’s and I had the Tesla Model 3 for a weekend recently (Turo rental). Firstly, I love the i3...but I do think that the i3S was a let down. I was hoping for a much sportier aesthetic on the S model and a larger bump in specs, but it’s barely distinguishable from the regular i3. I think BMW missed the mark :( Second problem is price because at $50k+ the i3 is a super hard sell now. It hasn’t changed much in over 4 years, it’s range is low compared to its competitors, and it doesn’t have basic features that you would expect to see on a car at that price point (electric seats/memory, blind spot detection, etc). The Tesla model 3 is a beautiful car and a lot of fun to drive. It’s range is incredible, and it has tons of premium features. The i3 was the king, but I don’t believe it can continue to compete with the Tesla model 3 unless it takes a truly significant price drop or is redesigned with a lot more features and increased range.

I think the Teslas are amazing but the interiors are NOT QUITE what you would hope for at the price? But I guess people don't really buy a Tesla for the interior or the production quality... I suppose Tesla will improve the quality of those quite quickly in the future. Otherwise, how about an iPace?

I 100% agree with you that as a new car the value proposition between the Tesla Model 3 and the BMW i3 heavily favors the Model 3.. However, I just paid $24G for a 2018 with 4,000 miles on it and at that price point I think the i3 is a fantastic value. Is it a Model 3? no. BUT a used Model 3 with a clean title is still going for $38-$42G where I live. I was burning $60 in gas every week so half of my payment is being made by my gas savings alone in my weekly commute. The i3 is a fun car, but its not the technology platform of the Model 3 at half the price.

Just one thing I thought I would correct. You said the tub is recycled carbon fiber, it's not. Its carbon reinforced polymer (plastic) as well as all the tub of the car. The roof however is made from recycled pieces that are left over from making the tub. Just thought I mentioned it. Btw, I don't know why people are scare of the price of the i3s. Sure, it's expensive but you don't have to buy it. I think there are better lease deals at the moment and they are totally worth it. Question? Would you lease the i3s for a couple of hundred bucks? for a couple of years? I would. And honestly I don't think you want to be buying an electric vehicle at the moment. Battery technology is constantly changing and you don't want to be stuck with a degraded battery either. So I think electric cars at the moment are a good example where a lease makes sense. Anyways, I just found out about your channel I really like it, just subbed. Keep up the good work!

Are the cells you use to build batteries still the same as two, three years ago? No, that has changed completely. Especially with the cells for the automobile. Tesla, for example, still uses the 18650, a 2.9 or now a new 3.4-Ah cell. This is the round cell that everyone from electrical appliances in the household knows. With a nickel-cobalt-aluminum cathode and graphite on the anode and mixed with a bit of silicon. Since the life is not very high. Renault takes an NCM pouch cell. That's better. Pouch cells are flat and have an aluminum foil as the outer skin. The disadvantage is that they eventually inflate, which limits the lifetime. State of the art are the cells used in the BMW i3. A nickel-cobalt-manganese cell with solid core. That is, with a solid aluminum housing, laser welded. It is designed to have 20 years of life. 20 years? How do you know that? You can drive simulations in test series. Is the lifetime forecast reliable? It is very reliable. This can be proven to one month exactly. The lifetime is exactly 20.9 years. End of Life means that the battery can then be recharged to 80 percent of its original capacity. adacemobility.wordpress.com/2013/10/21/batterie-experte-sven-bauer-der-tesla-akku-oder-der-im-bmw-i3-das-ist-ein-gewaltiger-unterschied/

I enjoyed your review of the car. Thanks for posting However, I beg to differ re the fully manual seat adjustment. It makes a lot of sense when you're trying to save every kilo...or pound. BTW, I agree that reflections in the windscreen are a pain in the neck, but the "kind of like, recycled carbon fiber" comment? It's a hemp product and there are good environmental reasons for using it. One thing I found surprising about the i3 is the fact that the rear passenger windows are fixed. Hmmmmm.

I have the same interior and exterior color and i've never experienced a reflection in the windshield. The fact that the back windows don't "roll down" adds to the feeling that my daughter feels trapped in the back seat.

The charger itself is splash proof though (IP94 rated as far as I know). Although you do raise a valid point. To that end, BMW sell a protective bag that goes in the frunk and adds a bit more splashproofing (got one today, just big enough for the EVSE, tire repair kit and a cable for public chargers)

I have looked at every ev currently available to me and none have the range I need bar the Model S and that is out of my price range. (I am in a RHD country so wont see the model 3 til next year and maybe not not then) I did give serious condieration to the i3, my last 3 and current cars have all been BMWs but the i3 seems over priced for what you get. At the end of the day its all down to range and if I have to have a petrol engine, I'll just drive my current 420. Just my $0.02

@KURTrek
@KURTrek 6 жыл бұрын
Nick , most of the reason why demand is greater for the model 3 is because GM destroyed the EV1. Anyone aware of that fact won’t even think about getting a Bolt even though it was made under a different CEO. I also want to say the reason Tesla EVEN exists is because the founders saw that there was a huge demand for electric cars when GM was selling the EV1.

Many people getting an i3 new will benefit (either directly or indirectly) from state and federal EV tax credits and even other incentives, so the depreciation is probably similar (if not less) than the typical luxury car.
