My landscape photography road trip through Scotland continues north to Glencoe where I encounter the type of weather you can expect most of the time in this region. A storm is building and although these conditions can be challenging, they do offer some photographic rewards in the way of mood, drama and atmosphere. My DSLR camera gets a soaking, but the weather sealing of the Canon 5D MKIV holds firm. Astoundingly, my vlogging camera, the Canon M50 gets even more of a drenching and did not fail me once. In fact, this little M50 has been subject to these conditions time and time again over the past 18 months and has never let me down. I hope you enjoy the video.

Lol! I was thinking the same. No wonder he always seems so stressed, I would be to setting up all those shots...especially the ones where he intentionally puts his boot back into the mud to create a scene/shot.

Just two minutes into it and I too was already thinking about the effort put into placing the camera, walking the scene, and then having to go back to retrieve the camera. All this in the muck and rain. That's dedication. I have to admit I wouldn't even want to be out there in that mess let alone try to film myself out in it.

I thought the same thing too. I always think it's kind of funny watching all these photographer videos or thru hikers showing them walking along and doing things when you know they had to set up the video camera, go back and walk thru the scene, and then have to come back and pick up the camera and it do it all over again for real. But it does make it more interesting than everything being from a first person POV I guess.

In response to your mail: yes, absolutely 'took note of incorporating more ambient sounds in your videos. I enjoy it, as I suspect most people will. I don't think we're watching your videos for short and to the point - I think most of your following - to varying degrees - are photographing these beautiful places vicariously through you - so the more time, the more "immersion", the better. Thanks for taking us along.

There's nothing like a guy suffering for his art, especially when he has to film himself crossing rocks and water, the second time, because the first time he was setting the camera up to film the second time, then there is that boot in the bog vacuum moment - fabulous dedication there. All in a nasty wet wind too. Good work!

Yes, the slow style with environmental sounds works very well. Makes it easier to have a sense of the whole, rather than just the visuals. And sets the visuals even more strongly into the experienced world. Definitely. Also: very relaxing to watch.

I rarely comment on KZbin videos. I have watched many of yours and even though your photography is beautiful let's not forget about the video itself. All I can think every time I start watching is all the monumental work that you put into this production. Every single take involves you constantly moving all the gear around, often in difficult terrain/conditions, getting back into the frame, and repeating everything all over again. It really makes you think that there's a whole team filming. You, sir, are a machine!

Fourteen months ago my husband and I traveled to Glencoe from Washington State. We packed wellies, rain pants, down pants, down coats and raincoats. Guess what?? It rained--hard and was chilly; I was so grateful for my raingear because one of the two pictures I had planned to take was of the Glencoe valley, and I would not be hampered by rain. I got the shot, and the moody skies really delivered a great image. I like your slow-paced video and thoughtful approach to imaging! thankyou so much!!

Hi Thomas, here is a tip for those rainy days in the campervan. Fill a sock full of cat litter (and obviously tie the end off), then just place it in the van during your trip and it acts as a dehumidifier. You will find it will absorb the moisture and keep the inside relatively dry. 👍📸

We experienced that same weather last October when we travelled to SKYE via Ballachulish! We were in the UK for 14 days and after leaving London day 3 we didn't see the sun until we landed back In Sydney Australia.! LOL. We still loved the region and want to go back there. It is so different her In Australia we are in the middle of a 2-3 year drought with severe water restrictions. Love the new format, it's good to mix it up, it creates a sense of tranquility and mood.

I would reiterate that, when you are only walking a short distance from your car in the rain, you wear rubber gear (as for yachting) with wool underneath, not breathable fabrics that are made for strenuous hiking but do not keep you dry. Rubber will keep you absolutely dry but for perspiration. Furthermore they make this little product called a "lens hood" that helps in the rain. That thought aside I am amazed at the freedom with which Heaton allows his gear to get wet, very brave and smart cuz apparently it works. I would pack up my 5DII at the first drop and bag it and run down the mountain.

That was one classy video! I even liked the wind noise because your wind sock moved the noise more into the bass. I know the rain and wind is a pain, but the color is still all there. There’s no fall color better than on mountain tundra. Since the color sensors in our eyes shut down in low light, we see everything as much more gray than the camera does. Ansel Adams wrote a lot about colors in the rain. Thanks for sharing this, Thomas!

Hello Thomas, even though the weather isn't quite what you would prefer, I say your videos and the way you include yourself in it with each episode is quite a masterpiece.Filming oneself and being able to focus on photographing isn't easy and you seem to have mastered this art quite well especially when it comes to the various changes in the weather outlook. Hope these videos do have a good return for the expenses that you incur by going places under different circumstances. There is a lot to think about behind the scenes. Cheers.

I'm mixed on whether I like the approach or not.
