Excellent review. I rode a Tarmac sl4 since 2013 and loved it. Then I thought about replacing it for my 50th birthday in 2021. Fall 2020: I was drooling over the new Tarmac and was planning to buy the Pro version. At this moment came out the Aethos and at first I also thought: no, not for me, this retro bike, non aero and so on… the owner of my local bike shop then told me that there wouldn’t be any Tarmac Pro U Di2 for sale in Canada in 2021, only the tarmac Pro SRAM 1X, which I didn’t want. But he convinced me to take a closer look at the Aethos. I read lots of reviews about it and finally ordered an Aethos Pro for spring 2021. And it’s hands down the best bike I ever rode. I now love the understated look of this bike. Speed and handling are amazing but at the same time it’s so smooth! No problem taking big pulls in group ride or at a sportive with lots of climbing I do each year (and btw I did my best time ever at that sportive). And as I love to go on bike trips in the Alps or Pyrenees, it’s going to be so easy to pack in the bike box.

Coming from a tarmac SL2 and dropping S Works SL7 riders for fun, I feel like I would enjoy a beautifully built Aethos with a clean 1x12 setup and Reserve 52/63 on tan wall tires. Working full time, and with a young family, i want something that allows me to enjoy that limited free time on the road. A move to 28mm tyres from 26mm showed me how much comfort I was leaving on the table for no real benefit.

Thanks so much for this review. I’ve bought and sold two Tarmac’s over the past three years because I never felt super comfortable in comparison to my Diverge. Now my Diverge has become mostly a road bike and my HT mtn bike does gravel and mtn duty. Last year I did 7600 miles and 550,000 feet of climbing here in SoCal. Having a mtn bike background, I’m must more comfortable on a real mtn bike in the dirt even though I love the Diverge. Going into 2022 I upped my riding goals and I think it’s time for a dedicated road bike again. I may go and grab an Aethos today and part ways with the Diverge. It’s tough to give up such a nice bike with really no complaints but I know the Aethos will outshine it on the road in every way. I may keep both but I’m not sure if my budget really should take that it.
@outdoorbros_2 жыл бұрын
What’s up Jordan? Have you ridden together? Your name looks familiar. The lines blur quite a bit between HT mountain bike and diverge. You could argue that one of those could be eliminated. While not totally knowing your riding style, I would think you could eliminate the Divege and use the hardtail for gravel with a less aggressive tire. The Aethos is 👑. You’ll love it.

@@outdoorbros_ I picked up the Aethos yesterday and put in a 50 miler. Really great handling bike. I didn’t feel a beat up as I often did in my Tarmac. Very flickable and nimble yet stiff enough I can still feel like all of my power is being used not wasted. Yes I’ll most likely ditch the Diverge at some point. I tried search for an SWORKS crux frameset but they’re all gone. According to my shop the chances of more showing up this year are slim to none. We may have ridden together at some point. Seems like we’re on the same roads and trails around this area.

Very well put together video comparing these two. I’ve been trying to decide between the two (at Pro/SRAM Force level spec) and then the Scott Addict RC line caught my attention. The Scott lines up more closely to the Tarmac vs Aethos but two things are compelling about the Scott: 1) Value - Scott seems to be priced more aggressively offering a Force build at just a coup,w hundred more than Spesh Comp (Rival) build and 2) Scotts design on an integrated cockpit seems really well thought out allowing easy bar/ stem swaps for the DIY wrench.
@outdoorbros_2 жыл бұрын
It seems some manufacturers are eating most of their margin on components to move volume. I noticed this on the prices of the Cervelo Asperos last year. The prices are 15-20% less than a comparison model from the big brands.
@chiefrocker122 жыл бұрын
My second option was scott addict in fact. But reason I swayed away was actually integrated bar stem and internal routing. I build and maintain my bikes 100%, one more thing, travelling with a bike that has custom parts and integrated bar stem cabling etc is a bit of a hassle. The simplicity of aethos is what had me. Mind u, this is no different to my bikes from the past few decades, but none were disc and under 7kg.
@jussa1012 жыл бұрын
I went with the addict rc. I've ridden tarmac and venges. The Scott feels less twitchy and more precise compared to the tarmac. The fit is more European as well flatter top tube.

Hi Chris. Just discovered this channel, great content! What can I say I do totally agree w/ you. These days all the bikes looks the same: Aero, dropped seat stays, integrated cable routing.... I feel, over the last few years road bikes have lost personality. For that very same reason the Aethos appeals to me. As you say understated classic looks that does not take away any perceivable performance, at least for us mere mortals (aka non-pros). Actually the older I get the more I miss the old looks of the traditional bikes. ever thought about buying the roval alpinist cockpit for the aethos. I know it's got the drawback of onepiece, but it matches the overall aestetics of the aethos very well. and i am sure you know what length and width you would need by now anyways, so a one piece cockpit is no big deal. it is just so pretty - i feels like the roval alpinist cockpit perfectly matches the shape of the bike
@outdoorbros_2 жыл бұрын
It’s definitely a good look. I just wanted something more traditional and something with more modularity. Especially after having bikes like the Venge Vias where adjusting and changing one cockpit component is a task.
@MarcraM82 Жыл бұрын
My two cents as I own both! Both great bikes! The Tarmac is faster due to the better aerodynamics, you do notice this above certain speeds. Definitely a less comfortable ride, more vibrations and less complaint. Tarmac is also better is descending long fast straight sections of road where the tarmac is smooth, just cuts through the wind in high fast speed. Tarmac is better for your flat roads & smaller punchy climbs, shorter rides where you are just going all out 100% effort. Aethos is slower if we are talking straight line speed. The Aethos feels lighter, more nimble - more acceleration feeling at the feet and has a buttery smooth feeling to it which is odd for carbon. You definitely notice the better compliance - I can be on this in long 100km + rides and feel great afterwards. In terms of descending, if its a steep twisty technical descent the Aethos has the advantage here - just feels slightly better planted through turns when pushing both bikes to the limit. A bit more stable and confidence inspiring on the Aethos despite the lighter weight. So in my opinion the handling/cornering is better. If I had to pick one it would be the Aethos. Because where I need most advantages (up big hills and twisty technical descents) the Aethos is better. Fast straight line speed is easy on both bikes but faster with the Tarmac. Probably better suited if you're racing. For me it comes down to what I find most challenging in cycling? Holding a consistent straight line speed OR climbing and descending. It's definetly the latter so that's why id pick the Aethos. I find most of my aerodynamic gains are with my body position and helmet/wheels choice anyway. Just a small note, I'm 70kg and have both frames in 10R carbon. Lastly just an FYI - my third bike an Italian Steel Pegoretti Responsorium (about 7.2kg including pedals) this bike feels better than both these bikes by a MILE! Particularly on fast twisty descents you can bomb your way down with more smiles than any of the above!! Also the most comfortable out of all the 3 and the best 'feeling' when riding. Having said that, the Aethos is the most comfortable Carbon bike I've ridden though and closest to steel in this regard.

I just picked up an aethos (comp model) last month and so far so great. Loving the performance (climbing and long rides) and feel of it. My daily bike for about a year or so is a tarmac SL7 Pro. Before that was 2019 Venge Pro (purple satin) but that’s off topic. Definitely the SL7 is faster but I do like the “endurance” feel of the Aethos. I put turbo cotton “hell of the north” 28’s. While the tarmac has the stock turbo cotton 26’s. Definitely reminded me of when I had an Roubiax. Both are great to own and I’m fortunate to own both. For me.. if you want speed and more speed I go with the Tarmac SL7 but if I just want to have a good ride 25-50 miles. I will go with the Aethos and agree even tho both of the bikes I own are 10R carbon. The Aethos definitely has better handling with the speed.

Good review and nice explanation 👍🏻 maybe if you don not mind can compare it with colnago v3rs? 😁 i have 3 bike in mind, sl7, aethos, and v3rs, and now with your explanation only 2 contender for my next dream bike 🤩

What’s up, Arvin? I wish I had some experience/feedback on the V3RS- it’s a beautiful bike. There aren’t a ton of Colnago riders here, so I rarely see one and it’s unlikely I’d be able to take one out for a day. That being said, it looks a lot like the bikes we’ve discussed and is on par with race/sport geometry. I do think it’s hard to top the Aethos and SL7…

@@outdoorbros_ i’m fine bro 😁 do my best to raise my ftp 🤣 very unfortunately not many colnago riders in there for you to take a look and ride. I have ask a person who have sl7, v3rs and aethos, he said that aethos can not be compare to sl7 and v3rs because there are race bike, also v3rs with campagnolo GS and wheel set feel more aggressive and responsive than sl7, that is why i’m so curious about it, maybe sl7 with new dura ace or ultegra 12 speed will feel more aggresive and responsive too hahaha but aethos is so desirable with the classic look 😍

Won’t you say the roubaix is the best amalgamation of the two with both speed and comfort again for 99% of us who don’t race?
@outdoorbros_2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your riding style, yes. Although I wish the Roubaix had larger tire clearance. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the bike models get absorbed into the others on the next generation- they’re becoming too similar.

I'm still riding a 2012 CAAD 10 frame (but with campy 12 speed/WTO's), so I rarely see another bike like mine in the group. I'm really looking hard at the Aethos, but I don't want to leave my CAAD all alone in the garage, 😞😞.

No sense in abandoning the bike you love! Makes me sad to see the SL7 on the trainer.

Great Video it’s so hard to pick a road bike nowadays with all the different brands etc Like you I don’t like to be a sheep I like to be a unicorn 🦄 and ride what nobody else is. The atheos as you said Is pure, going back to basics, feel the ride and the moment. A do it all bike . What do you think of the atheos SRAM rival set up. It’s still up there at $7500. If you upgrade the wheels which I likely would that’s another $1500. I may as well go for the atheos $10,000 with much better spec. However I can’t bring myself to spend that much on a bike. The SL7 again at $7500 stock wheels your likely want to upgrade. Same situation as the Atheos dohhhhhhhh

A Aethos shouldn't be priced the same as the Tarmac. Should be at least 25% cheaper if not more.
@outdoorbros_2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Drop the price and it’d be a common bike for the common rider.

Nothing screams "needy, privileged white guy" than this statement: "Everyone around me rides an L7, so now I have something a little bit different just like I had the Venge back in the day and it stood out in a sea of Tarmacs". So glad you can still feel special riding a 5-figure bicycle with a bunch of other guys riding 5-figure bicycles.🤣
@outdoorbros_2 жыл бұрын
Wow. We should go for a spin- hopefully you’d realize I’m not a “needy, privileged white guy.” Either way, thanks for watching.
