Crossing the Simpson Desert SOLO - CRAZY or not?!?!

I'm sold on the idea Gary! It's something that's be playing on my mind for a while now. I have a vehicle on order and a plan to get it ready, tested and settled for next year when I'll finally get to be alone in the desert. My search has brought me to your channel and fate to this video. The line about the trepidation crossing the first dune is the bit that sold it. That's the rush, the excitement I desire. The connecting with nature, capturing of post card photographs, isolation and out and out wonder at the beauty are all cherry's. Good on ya mate, you've gained a new subscriber.

It's not for everyone, you do need a bit of self discipline and resilience going solo, but it is very rewarding accomplishing a journey that remote all by yourself.

Hi Gary...Catching up on your adventures in the Simpson. I have sent you a message on one of your older videos so this will be a repeat. Thank you for sharing and the information is excellent for anyone feeling a little daunted with this trip. I am planning to cross the Simpson on the Madigan Line in May with my 2013 FJ. Standard with no lift and with factory LR fuel tanks. Could you advise how much more fuel I should carry for the crossing? Also besides the usual vehicle service preparation, do I need to consider doing anything else to get the FJ ready? It already have AT tyres. Thank you in advance and I look forward to you advice.

Thanks 👍 I have 2011 FJ so std tank plus 120 aux tank. I also took 4 jerrycans totally 270lt. Filled up in Alice then not again until Birdsville with approx 300km range left. You could fill up in Finke to reduce fuel carry. I have a 2inch lift which is handy if the track is chopped up & also run 285/70/17 LT tyres giving a little bit of extra clearance. Your tyres should be LT. Keep your camping gear light and use jerry cans as you go. Have a backup plan in case you break down (eg insurance) and hope not to use it. My trip was fun with no dramas 😎

Great video, Gary. We met a few times in 2022, crossing east to west. We were the group of 7 that were on the road every morning. I really like your comprehensive tire repair kit. Was that a kit or piece you put together. Cheers

I’m not crazy …….So I’m going alone in a few weeks. We always met plenty of people in the Simpson. I’m thinking if I go alone it will be exciting and different.
