My wife, God rest her sole, used to tell me. "John, you aren't building a piano!" Build it, send it! Close enough is probably better than "factory"!

Nice to see someone taking a job seriously that doesn't necessarily need to perfect! I watched both videos, chuckling to myself, because I did this exact job for my farmer dad and his 4-wheeler. Took me too long, but I wanted it correct. Made it, attached it, surprised him with it, and the first thing he did was stick a pry bar between the front top and bottom rails and bend the bottom one outward so he could "use it as a bumper", lol Whatayagonnado, huh?

I kept thinking about what I would do next and it was exactly how you did it. It's perfect. I couldn't have done it better myself. Great minds think alike. It doesn't get any better than that. Shazam!

I think it turned out great, the only thing I would have done differently is add a 3rd support on the bottom in the middle between the other two, probably doesn’t need it though, I just tend to overbuild things.

Turned out great. I like the look of inserting the expanded metal in the gaps, instead of just laying it over the whole thing. Hope we get to see it all painted up, and installed when we see the ATV again!

Great job man! Just for future reference the trick to bending square tubing is to make sure to collapse the inside of the bend first by placing an appropriate sized round solid stock either on the bender or on the tube. That will make a much prettier and controlled bend.

A good buddy of mine is a retired mechanic, and I've witnessed him welding on many occasions over the years, and he often did what you demonstrated here, which is to place the tip of the welding head close to the work and then close his eyes/use no shield for the brief time that was required to tack the metal together. This, however, exposes one to intense visible and ultraviolet radiation, albeit for a relatively brief amount of time. I wondered about the risks using this method, especially as he used it for decades. It turns out that even brief exposures to this kind of emitted light are quite hazardous. Use the mask before you strike your arc. And read the scientific paper "Hazard of ultraviolet radiation emitted in gas metal arc welding of mild Steel" for evidence.

I wasn't going to say it, but you asked for tips and thinking of making another one for the back..... I would have turned the bottom of the rack upside-down, so with the metal mesh to the original frame, winning another inch of space in height and volume. 🤷‍♂️ Great project Eric! 👍

Nice work Eric. But I ould follow original rack specially rear corners, then only 2 round ones, and both is separate part, easy to cut to meet rack under it. And second thing, make it easy to remove without tools, some hooks to meet rack, and other side some attachement to big wing nuts to keep it down, big wingnuts to handle them even winter gloves on. And one more when You make that rear basket, make that rifle rack so You can take it of when not needed, so if you are hunter type person? And last of all . Have a nice winter there, I hope that to Finland also, not too cold.🥶
