It is you, Menards is my #1 store. I am so done with dragging lumber around on a cart, through narrow isles, through a checkout, and across the parking lot to load. Menards has it all just don't take your bride because they have quite the selection for her interests. I'm lucky because Menards has a strong presents in SE Michigan. For my Stihl and Milwaukee needs it is ACE Hardware. I have not been in a HD or Lowes in years.

The key to buying lumber at Menards is to order it online in the app, then just drive around without going into the store at all. Drive in, grab your stuff, show the security guy on the way out, and roll. We got a Menards in my area a few years ago, and now we have 3 or 4, and it's my first stop for just about anything - even though I have a HD and Lowes closer.

Mike, I know the feeling of something being stolen. My wife and I bought a brand new 1979 ford F250. Had it for a short time. I parked it at work by the side door. When I was done with lunch and figured I'd put my lunch container in the truck to my terrible surprise, there was an empty spot. The police found the truck about a month later. With no bed and a few small items missing. We had the truck repaired and had to use an old bed, which killed me. I kept the bed immaculate. About a month later, my wife took it to work and parked it in a fenced-in area that you used a card to enter. I get a call at 2 am. The truck is gone a second time. I never saw it again.

Omg, what a shopping area. You'll have to make a day of it and bring Melissa. Love that tongue and groove wall. Very nice. I can't wait to see the walls finished. I love your story time. I have two related; the sawdust burned 2 feet above the fire!! At my work, true name, Ray Smart, was an avid sportsman and bullet reloader. As he was leaving for work, he loaded up his wood stove for his wife, as it was very cold. To save time, he poured gun powder into his hand and took it to his stove. He bent over to see inside and tossed the powder into the stove. Laughter erupted when he walked into work w no mustache or eyebrows. Theives. My houses have been broken into 4 times. The first time, they knew I was working out of state, only home for the weekend. Took everything. I mean everything. The deputy and I went to middle school together. What a fumbling idiot. They even took my file cabinet. It wasn't locked. Full of sentimental things that I know they just dumped out somewhere. Nothing of value to them in it. That hurt so bad. 2nd time I rented a duplex next to the high school we were building. Came home, saw the door cracked open, that same sick to my stomach feeling overcame me. Neighbor was a city cop that worked nights. Absolutely no help whatsoever. It happened two more times. Needless to say, I have 8 cameras outside, two inside. My EDC goes on my pants in the morning and beside my pillow when I change into my pj's. Even when I know I'm not leaving my house. So help me, true. I put a shelf up beside my toilet to lay my pistol on. NC has 500k illegals. I will not hesitate so help me, I will NOT HESITATE!!!. I have a permit, and am a gold member of USCCA. I'm 69 and handicap. There's my story. Thanks for the late video.👍🚜❤️🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲

It's sad we have to live like this. I'm in podunk IA and started to EDC, there have been a couple times when I forgot and I'm like crap forgot it, if the bride is with me she's always, like do you think you really need it? I always say or think, every victim didn't think so either. Times and liberal policies have dictated the need.

There's a reason people put spark arrestors on their dust evacuation systems in their shops. You just demonstrated it perfectly. And I understand what you mean about feeling violated after a theft. I was a traveling musician until I retired at 65. I was on the road on one of my trips for about a month. Came back and as I walked up the steps I noticed the door was open. My heart sank. On that tour I was playing bass and was using my Rickenbacker bass because it was a beautiful showy bass. But at home I had a Fender precision that was a collectible that was one of 700 and just sounded and played great so I used it to record with and play on local engagements. I also had a Gibson 335 that had some custom work done on it along with a 50 watt Marshall that had also been customized. Money was not so easy to come by in those days so these were hard earned treasures that I would never have sold for any amount of money. They were gone. I sat on the bed and cried. Literally. They were never recovered.

Ohh my gosh...sadly, you almost can't let anyone know you play if you're ever going out on tour. Unless someone is always there. I guess why so many Nashville guys keep stuff in storage. None of my stuff is ever out in the public spaces of the house, except around family. Have you seen Vince Gill's basement studio? Stuffed full of vintage Martins/Fenders/Gibson's...he's GOT to have some amazing security...lol.

@@Guitaural. True. I bet Vince's place is amazing. Life was pretty touch and go back when my break in occurred, but that was many years ago and I've been greatly blessed since then and also have a wonderful collection of gear and an incredible 48 track studio. It's an unbelievable time now with the technology we have. I'm 80 now and don't do much other than my youtube channel, but it's been a good life so I can't complain. Much better than when the break in occurred. Thank you Lord!!

Todays tools are just incredible. I go back to the 50's (actually the 40's but too young to know about tools then) and these new battery tools are marvels. I tried a couple of Black and Decker early lead acid battery tools back when they first came out many years ago, but no cigar lol! Maybe 5 minutes of useful tool life that didn't work that good the first minute much less after 10. But today's are so convenient, and you're right, the batteries if you have 2 or 3, last longer than I do. I don't even get into the battery vs fossil fuel debate because truth is, there's a place for both. But building tools? Battery all the way for me.

I felt like when you talked about purchasing the lumber for the Cabin, and you got it stained, or clear coated, you were going to love that. HUGE time saver, i remember all the videos on the siding you put in back at your house. O my goodness, lots of extra work, wouldn't much matter how much extra for the stained wood, the time. You have about, i think, a 4 hour round trip to the Cabin, and you made up for that in time saved on pre-strained lumber. Great video-love the Cabin so peaceful. ty ❤💯🙏

One suggestion for when you're not sure if you need to bring your tablesaw. Get a track saw. When ever I go someplace to do some kind of wood work for someone, I just throw my tracksaw and a long track in. They are light, don't take up a lot of room, and I can do about everything a tablesaw can do. If you have to do a lot of rip cuts, it will take longer but it will get you through in a pinch.

Hello, Mike a long-time fan of your channel. I purchased the same lumber from Woodworkers Shop in Michigan for my family cabin. There will be a few pieces that will not fit as tight as intended. One of the easiest and fastest ways I found to tighten the board up was to take a wood chisel and pound it in right above the nailing flange pry it down to tighten the joint then nail away. I also used all the scrapes for kindling for my wood burner. Keep up the great content!

Growing up in a small town there was a Barber shop, cobbler shop, lumberyard, hardware store, and grocery store. I feel that was the reason we felt like that was the way to have a good solid community. The basis for our economy was the Coal Mine. We were our own little world and we didn't have a need for law enforcement. If a person was doing something they weren't suppose to do someone will tell you to stop. When I got home dad or mom would talk to me. That was why I feel I grew up in the best environment possible.

Hey Mike, Menards is a Wisconsin home base company. They have two types of layouts Electric on the right or Electric on the left otherwise their stores are setup pretty much the same. Their wood products are decent usually a better selection than Home Depot. Save your receipts and get the 11% rebate. A lot of their tools and such are of Chinese origin so kind of like harbor freight in that regards.

Run the pine about 1-1/2” off the door jamb, then take your pine material, rip it to the dimension of the pine and put it on the door jamb with a 1/4” reveal. Then you can put casing on if you like.

Wow Mike, Almost the exact same story. When I was a young man, around forty years ago, I was a building contractor in our small town. Worked all week, and most every Saturday, church on Sunday. I was building a basement house for us in My "free time", lol, and had the upstairs framed and roofed. Came home from a family gathering after church one afternoon, the rear basement door was standing open, and yes, we were very violated. No other word discribes it better. I was so upset and frustrated. Anyway, glad you shared that story, No one can imagine what it feels like unless you experience it. God bless you and your family.!!

Loved to show you our cabin in Bedford Co. One thing about the trim we used on the T&G is we used 2x4’s for some trim. First they were roughed up with a Chain and hammer with some knife cuts on the edges. Then stained and once in place a two inch counter sink hole was cut for the large square head antique bolts I found and painted black. Turned out great!

Mike, I too have a lot of DeWalt battery powered tools, some exactly like yours. If i may suggest, the DeWalt FlexVolt batteries will work on all those 20V tools you had on your tailgate. I use the 6 and 9 Ah FlexVolt, but they do have a 12 Ah version too. Now the FlexVolt batteries are larger in size than those you have, but they power those tools with no issue. Their 20V Max Powerstack batteries are another option. Keep up the great work 👍👍

I work for a manufacturer and we sell to HD, Lowes, Menards and every other Hardware and contractor supply store across the country. I may be biased because Menards is one of my accounts, but I was a Menards customer long before I was managing the account sales. Menards is by far the best stocking retailer of building supplies. They have the best quality dimensional lumber and the best inventory. I am an hobbyist woodworker and they have a good selection of milled hardwood. And as you mentioned, they have a very wide selection of products as their stores are much larger than any other home improvement type retailer.

I love the fact that you don't have to put all your lumber on a cart and then onto your truck it saves a step handling it by going in and telling them what you want and then driving up too it. there prices are generaly lower than other stores too and most of the year they do the 11% rebate on everything which you mail in for store credit.

Check with your electrician, I think he set the electrical boxes for 1/2" drywall, the box should go all the way to the flat of the siding. It was hard to see with the camera angle. You can buy extensions to bring them out to the back of the covers. The idea is if there is ever a spark in the box it will not ignite the wood. I'd just move the boxes forward for the rest of the cabin.

Hey Mike. I am in the convenience store/gas station business. Pretty well versed in the video camera stuff and have pretty much seen it all. We had an issue several years ago where I guy comes in and fills up his vehicle with gas. Comes in the store carrying a 2-3 year old kid and a large diaper bag over his shoulder that appeared to have very little in it and walks around the store for a few minutes. Says to the cashier I need to change her diaper, I'll be right back up to pay you. 10 minutes or so goes by and all of a sudden he's gone without paying. No problem. I've got video of the vehicle, license plate, tons of footage of the guy, followed him around the store on cameras and documented everything he stole and put in the diaper bag which was stuffed full. Called the local PD and gave him all the stuff i had. Couple of days later the officer comes back. The license plates on the vehicle are stolen, the vehicle is stolen, and he had put out pictures of the guy through a state deal for police and not a single hit. Moral of the story. Cameras are a great assist but.....

That is what drives me nuts about liberal idiots berating cops for chasing people, the ding bats say "they have his plate number, just go to his house and wait". The only thing the cops can do by going to the registered owner of the license plates, is to let them know their license plates have been stolen.

Good morning Morgan's from the Gulf Coast . I guess you could say we all have break in , stolen stories. My younger daughter had her place broken into twice ! This is a residential neighborhood. The first time the door off the carport was kicked in ! The second time was through a small bathroom window that only a child could fit through. Once the child was in the house , they unlocked the door. The thieves were the gab and go ,real quick, no ran sacking ! The one thing they took that saddened me was my late wife's jewelry box . There was nothing of great valve , but were things of great sentimental valve like her wedding ring.

Good morning from the house of pine up here in Plattsburgh, NY. My first time seeing red pine T&G. Looks great! 3 of My high school summers I apprenticed for Everett Richards. A well known Adirondack great camp finish carpenter. He taught Me to hang T&G from the top down. He hand nailed everything. Yup that's pain. Start a finish nail tap a 1 1/4" hand chisel into the stud and pry upwards so board is tight and hammer nail in not leaving a mark on wood. Then use a hand set to set mail. Rip bottom board for a tight fit. Super slow to install. Any butt fit ends were on a stud. End surfaces were beveled with a small hand plane. I found the softwood interior walls hold the heat once warm and humidity during summer months. It'll be beautiful when finished. I can see another cottage out in new clearing at home.

Hi Melissa, Mike, i am sure that you already do this, but you have to travel heavy, going to the cabin. One break in leads to more. The cabin is now a target. Not happy that you have to deal with a situation like that. Try to beef up security. Post the property as well, use your imagination with that. My best to you and your family. Be safe, Joe Capo.

You might reconsider using dark brown trim around the windows because it has a surprisingly large effect on the amount of outside light getting into the building when compared to light/white trim.

Living in Eau Claire WI, the home of Menards it is our only option. No Home Depot or Lowes. John Menard has done a good job of keeping them at bay. love the store and it’s great to go for one stop shopping.

Mike, just a suggestion, when you make your door & window trim allow the trim to overlap the wall wood. Rip the backside to accommodate 2-7/8" + 1" overlap. Maybe a 1/4" thick. Good luck!

Mike, when you demonstrated how flammable sawdust was it reminded me of how we used coffee creamer powder out of our military rations to do the same thing. It was a great fire starter. 😂

Mike, I am with you 100%. Practically everywhere I go, and wherever I may be, my antenna is up, and the radar is turned on. If you have anything of value, someone will want to take it. This may seem a little fanatical, but it has paid off for me. Prevention is worth its weight in gold. You are doing very well, and I hope the very best for you and yours. Say hi to Melissa and the canine friends.

The wall looks great looking forward too finished results. I discovered a Menards in Indiana when I was still driving and while waiting to get loaded I took a walk through the store and your right they have everything. I bought several items from them. I think the closest one to me is in Mansfield Oh, but that's about a 3, 3 1/2 hour drive so a little further than I'd like to drive.

My husband is soon to be 82. We live 1 mile from Menards. He goes to Menards almost daily. Need I say, he loves that store. I always check online cheaper prices, and place a Menards order for pick-up. At times there is also 11% rebate). There is a small shopping charge, but really saves time. You do not go inside for this, just directly to the gate and the attendant directs you where to go.

Rebates are actually marketing 101. They get you into the store with the knowledge a significant number of people will not file the necessary paper work to collect the rebate. And as a bonus to the store you have to buy more product to actually get the rebate. Rebates are a win win for the store.

Texas dove hunt. Stopped at a restaurant afterward. Took my (expensive) shotgun (in its breakdown case) in with me and my buddies all laughed. Nine other guys lost one to three shotguns plus ammunition. I never assume any place is “safe”. I worry about your lumber. BTW, I always take all portable tools. You know, belt and suspenders. Looks really good. Great job.

I’m also a big fan of the Bosch laser. I use that thing at work regularly in the crane industry. I can use it to take accurate measurements where it would be almost impossible to use a tape up in the air. I can use it to point at stuff for the customer with the laser. Can’t believe how much I use that thing.

Nice job, love the wood! I own a gun shop and after a rash of local shop break ins I came up with this idea - have you ever seen those perimeter trip alarms that use a shotgun hull? Trip wire pulls a pin releasing a striker onto the primer of a shotgun shell. Well, a primed, obviously unloaded, shotgun shell is the perfect size for 4-5 pepper balls. When that goes off everything within 10 feet is dosed with pepper spray. There's a company that also makes flash bangs of the same concept. Certainly not the level of force someone breaking into your home deserves but at least they'll be crying and coughing for a bit and buying some new underwear. Their post pepper ball pants crapping dance would make awesome youtube content.

Instead of ripping a 2x down to 2 7/8 maybe leave it 3 1/2” and put a 3/4”rabbet along the edge. The trim won’t look so narrow plus it would overlap the T&G a bit in case anything were to ever shrink or move. Looking good though, seems like a relaxing project.

Thanks, works best if you’re doing miter cuts at the corners but not impossible if you’re doing square cuts to match the window trim, just a little more work to put the rabbet on the end of the board as well as the edge. I agree with the rest, stick with Menards. And definitely get the app so you can buy items in the yard before you even leave the house and not have to put on 2000 steps walking through the store.

Menard's is the best! Always cheaper than HD & Lowes, plus 11% rebate plus 2% contractor rebate. You can return anything without receipt, even many years after purchase. I recently went to Lowes for the first time in a decade. Three months later, they wouldn't return a new in package item with receipt because it was past 90 days. Most of my jobs take a few months to finish. I now drive 90 minutes to Menards over 5 miles to the other options.
