The 60’s & 70’s were a wonderful time to grow up almost anywhere as long as you weren’t in the cities! I live east of Greensboro NC and have best of both worlds! A lot of people don’t realize how the German U Boats ravaged the east coast and Gulf coast during WWII. A great read is the book Torpedo Junction. I was amazed how many ships were sunk. The Navy was focused on the Pacific and as a result did not initially address the situation adequately in the Atlantic. In fact, they didn’t direct the public to turn off coastal lights at night. The silhouettes of the freighters made them easy pickings for the U Boats. Amazing read if you are interested.

Just got back from OBX, man I love that place. One year we found out that if you swam really far out we could stand on this big area of sand where the water only came up to your shins, like they are talking about in this video. We would play catch out on it people looked so confused on the shoreline when they saw people standing out in the water haha.

That's called a sand bar. They are all over the oceans. We used to do the same thing in Florida beaches in the Gulf.

I’m 60 and was taken there as a baby and growing up. Grandma owned a very early beach cabin, still there. It is really changed, build up as more people discover how special it is there. Children who grew up and bring their children then grandchildren. Sometimes I remember how it used to be more sparsely populated and think 🤔 should we have kept it our special secret 🙅🏼♀️somehow? Yet I think of how all these people are loving it as much as I do. Creates a joyous atmosphere. Everyone smiling.

Want to say thank you for clearing up the actual OBX vs the show Netflix made...I've lived in kill devil hills on the obx for about 14 years now, I'm turning 25 here soon and growing up here is amazing. It has very dull winters tho because its such a seasonal place which means most of us have to make all of our money during the summer, (alot of ppls income is through tips, because we are mainly a service community) that way we save money in the summer and can survive thoughout the winter. Meaning summers can be long and not so fun once you become a working teen/ adult..If you have a stable income year around and can travel this would b an amazing place to own a home but if you're growing up down here keep in mind there is limited opportunities for education unless you move instate and that you'll more than likely work ALOT during the summer and winters will b long and boring if you dont travel or have some type of productive outlet. It's a love-hate relationship with this place. Couldn't picture growing up anywhere else though, the landscape itself is enough to keep you here. Let alone all the good food and weather.

Too bad no mention was made about the book "Graveyard of the Atlantic" where the title of this video comes from. It was written by a local historian named David Stick. I've not been to the OBX in quite a while, but I'm sure his books are still widely available - I have a signed first edition. I also knew him. I went to school with his kids and he was a Scoutmaster for the local Cub Scouts in the early 1960s along with my step-dad.

I grew up lower-middle-class in the 80s, and my fondest memories were from our summer trips to OBX. Dad got an old mildewy pop up camper & all the camping contents for dirt cheap. He fixed it up, hooked it up to the station wagon, and off we went to stay at the Cape Hatteras National seashore campgrounds for $6/night, where you could walk from your campsite down to the beach. Can't believe I survived the waves & undertow, TBH, since my parents did not supervise us at all once we were like 7 yrs old. Nothing like it, those lighthouses, the ferry out to Okcracoke, how loooooong it took to get there. The sound and smell of the surf, the cold water outdoor showers, the hibachi hamburgers, mosquitoes and the stars.

I grew up just over the sound bridge in Currituck. Now live about an hour away. Driving the beach since the early 1970's. About 30 years ago in Corolla, we ran across a huge bed of oyster shells right on the beach. They are not from the ocean they are from the sound. About 500+ yards west of where we were on the beach. Down the beach a ways was also a lot of dead tree stumps on the beach. Not just washed up. Still standing up, planted where they once grew. This was once a wooded area. Along with the oyster shells that were beds in the sound. From the wave action, the beaches have moved / encroached westward. Rolling over onto what was once a wooded area and the edge of the sound. Exposing all this to us.

I first saw and fell in love with the ocean at the Outer Banks in the early 70's when Duck north of Kitty Hawk was nothing but sand and Hwy 12 was the only place to find much civilization. Don't remember much of anything along US 158. Probably was 10-15 years before I finally decided that moving and living there would be nothing but a dream. I still love to visit but long for what the area was 45-50 years ago.

Sailing up the west coast in the gulf stream having left key west, we planned to stop near in Cape Hatteras. After leaving the gulf stream, a large wave crashed over our stern, filling the cockpit with water turning it into a bath tub. Fifteen minutes later, it happened again. So we jibbed over and headed back into deep water and headed across the Atlantic instead of stopping for fresh supplies.

I'm an outer banks native, this video is badass!

Yes you got it! And this is the biggest reason why I am strongly opposed to any off shore drilling for oil. It would be a catastrophe. And yes I have been a North Carolinian for my whole life.

Cool music. Cool surf shots. Video went straight into “Ghost of the Grand Banks” vs “Lara Croft” (the decent recent Tomb Raider version). Thanks Tory, awesome video. I also live near a shifting ‘sandbox’. 👍😄 PS The ship captains who tried to run the gauntlet chose... poorly.

I recently visited the outer banks with my daughter and granddaughter! We had a great time! The only problem was getting in line for dinner! My Ex- husband and I used to visit the outer banks when we dated. It was fascinating!

My husband's family is from all the surrounding area. Alot of the Ferebee family were Coast guards going way way back.

I live in N.C. I have never been to the outer Banks. We have went to Carolina Beach, Ocean Isle, Holden, or Oak Island. I used to go to Myrtle when I was younger. This is on my bucket list. It is still a 6 hour drive from my house in the western part of the state. I live 2 hours from the mountains and 4 from the beach. I would love to go soon.
@sarahdee3743 жыл бұрын
When I first moved to Asheville I didn't understand why so many folks from the mountains went to the SC beaches instead of the OBX. Then I went and discovered it was a 8-9 hr trip (depending on your final OBX destination) vs a 5.5 hr trip. I still love Ocracoke, but it's much more of a time commitment. Special place.
@KP-do2ss3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahdee374 That is exactly why. I still would love to go but it takes 6 hours from my house. I can be at any others beaches in 4 hours.
