I like to headcannon that since Esker is the loneliest traveler, the one least checked on or visited, he’s also the leading tune in the song. This may not be true but since his is the loudest I like to imagine the others are accompanying him as their way of saying “we’re with you buddy”

It does really sound like that, if you pair any specific instrument with Esker, they either use the same notes, or provide a backing tune

I had prisoner go first because he began it all tbf buttt I always felt the whistle or the banjo were the loudest to me esters hominca always felt like the vocals behind the whistle like esker was doing the speaking while everyone else played a tune of remembrance for him and the other lost travelers

That new instrument encapsulates the new DLC so well. Trying to avoid spoilers, it's just so nostalgic, melancholic, and even slightly creepy sounding. It almost sounds like someone singing out of sadness and regret, all while carrying a glimpse of hope.

It feels that way because it makes use of the seventh note of the C scale (a B note), which is the third note played in the song! Playing the B in a C chord makes it a Cmaj7, which gives it that cool, liminal sound.

I love how The Prisoner's theremin sounds like a cold, saddened, yet joyful wailing. Which is probably what The Prisoner felt like, having tried to correct a mistake and being punished for it, only to be freed by a kind stranger. They're a tragic and sympathetic character that only wanted what was best for their people. I'm glad that they at least got a proper resolution for everything.

@@alansmithee419 Despite that, they're still remembered by the Hatchling at the end; even if they never know it and just die in the resulting big bang, they still become part of that journey to reshape the universe. It really is tragic, but somehow uplifting at the same time...

@@alansmithee419 There are actual combinations to the three pillars in the subterranean lake, of which the third one turns off the overhead light that alerts the bells of your presence. And if you exit the simulation after freeing the prisoner, you can see their corpse in the now opened sealed vault in the real world. P.S. It is actually possible to meet Solanum, free the prisoner, and enter the eye to get the true ending in a single loop without dying if you are fast enough.

I love how the song progresses. At first, Riebec, who was always interested in the true story of the nomai, captivates your ears with his banjo, only to be taken over by Feldspar, never afraid to head towards another adventure awaiting him in even the darkest place possible, playing on his harmonica, Gabbro joins in, perfecting his skill with his flute as he waits for another cyclone to sweep him off the planet, Eskar's whistling comes to the forefront as he remembers the whole of your specie's progress while waiting, perhaps for another ship to need him once more, then Chert's drums as he plays for the funeral of the Universe. Solanum joins with their piano celebrating the end of their Specie's journey, even if finished by another, and finally, the stranger, tugging at the strings of his invisible theremin, crying for what his specie's done, yet celebrating what the universe achieved. The culmination of all these songs makes makes me super emotional, and I wish I could relive it again. I am happy to have witnessed this game. And I shall remember it forever.

This game helped me during a rough time. My boyfriend introduced this game to me beginning of this year, January to be specific. See my grandfather died on January 30th, 2022. It broke me, this game distracted me from that reality. When I met Esker he reminded me so much of my grandpa. Especially with how he sits in his little rocking chair, it all screamed “Grandpa” It comforted me in a way I guess… I really can’t listen to this without crying. It reminds me of him, when I discovered at the edge of the universe you can hear your friends pass off, it completely wrecked me. But! Instead of becoming horribly bitter, this game did make light on his passing. Yes he was here for a moment of my life, but his “song”.. his story will stick with me until I have my own children. I will always forever dwell on the what ifs or the could’ve beens that’s life. I wish he could’ve had a grandfather/granddaughter dance. I wish he could watch me walk up a stage to receive my next degree. But like in outer wilds I could either just stay in a infinite loop or take hold of my destiny. Healing isn’t easy yall I’ll tell you that. But this simple camp fire song has helped immensely in my healing process. Anyways I’m rambling, TL;DR: song make me think of grandpa and heart goes :(

Absolutely not ridiculous of you, games are an artistic medium as valid as any other. And this particular story is one that could *only* be told in the form of a game, or else it would lose so much of what makes it unique. It’s a deeply existential tale full of wonder, sorrow, and hope, and to call it anything less than a true masterpiece is a disgrace

It’s the perfect encapsulation of how intimate the experience of playing music with others can be. Everyone has one goal, everyone works together, and above all else, everyone is welcome. The song is beautiful not in *spite* of everyone’s differences, but *because* of them. Way back in high school marching band I had what I would describe as a transcendent experience where I felt fully and truly connected with everyone else, and I am 100% serious when I say that it was genuinely one of the happiest moments of my entire life

@PallyK It is kind of the opposite of the Nomai in a way. The Nomai risked everything to learn more about the Eye, no matter the consequences, while the Stranger's inhabitants once realizing the truth tried all they can to hide away in fear, even creating a simulation of the world they left. In the end I feel the game teaches that even when confronted with scary truths, always stand firm in the pursuit of knowledge and live your finite life to the best.

So I don't know if this is 100% correct, but I think that the real life musical instrument they used for the prisoner is the musical saw and not the theremin. After listening to people playing the saw on youtube, I can say that they sound very similar and it seems to fit the MO of the game. The rest of the instruments (banjo, harmonica etc) are mostly associated with American folk music, with the notable exception of Solanum's piano. The prisoner could be playing the theremin just to emphasise their alien-ness. But considering the rustic style of the stranger and the American folk music roots of the other insruments, the musical saw just makes more sense as it is also an instrument used in folk music

This song made me very very emotional the first time i heard it after finishing the dlc. I literally cried for 10 minutes, because of the memory, the nostalgia, the feelings this game brought to me, because of everything you know, it was not very logical. It was just something I could only feel, and feel deeply. This song is a masterpiece

Whether Life is Sad, Or Life is Glad, Whether existence is great, Or if existence is Awful, Whether it's the end of the universe, Or merely the beginning, There is one thing that can hold us together. And that thing is could be Love, Happiness, or even just living... ...But I believe that thing is Music. And it is Music that will bring a happiness to anyone. Whether they be sad or happy, Music will make them feel better.

This song is so perfect the only thing that feels left out is... well, you. You are the one that created the new universe and yet... here you stand, listening to a band made of 3 races all different but connected through music, but you are not able to join. That's a little sad to me. Edit : Alright! So it turns out the entire Internet has banded together to tell me how wrong I am. Well, that's fine if you believe you are the band Conductor, but to me, I prefer to think that around a campfire, everyone should have an equal role. So, that's why one last instrument just for you would be a great finishing touch.

In this darkness you've found yourself in, the stars slowly dying in this ancient glade, you're more lost than ever before. And the last of the light has died, leaving you alone with just the trees and quantum rocks. Except...there's a signal? You travel toward this unknown person to find...a small tree. As you blink, you find the tree getting younger and younger until it becomes a pile of wood surrounded by stones. Your only comfort in this void: a Campfire. As you sit, warmed up by the fire, and see the trees return, a familiar face pops by your side. Esker, the lonely Hearthian from the Attlerock, sits in their rocking chair. They ask you a simple question. "Do you hear music?" You pull out your signalscope and...you hear the sweet sounds of a banjo. Following the sound, you find the remains of a Nomai building, what Archaeologist Riebeck loved most. As the building slowly crumbles, you see their discarded instrument on the ground. You touch it, and the forest returns, with Riebeck now by your side. You find more signals, and more instruments. The stars that Chert wanted so badly to study, the hammock that Gabbro loved lounging in, the terrifying anglerfish and luminescent jellyfish that Feldspar would fight in a heartbeat. One by one, your friends return to the safe place you all share. However, there are two more signals, neither of which you recognize. One leads to a shuttle, skeletons of a race long gone building up, and this shuttle leads you to a familiar mask of one of them. Solanum, the last living Nomai. The other leads you to a lone tree, with a dug out grave. You delve into the dark depths, and find remnants of a home long past it's prime. One by one, their family photos fade, until all that remains is the reflection of their fears. Only one was to defy this fear. The Prisoner, who tried to right the wrongs of their people. Together, you all made music, and a new universe was born from infinite possibilities. Thank you for facing what was hidden in the dark.

There is but one universal truth to the human experience: Death Why else do so many mythos have some manner of afterlife? The alternative is horrifying. To just be wiped from existence. So what do we do with this one looming inevitability? Make life better for those who come after, and simply live.
