Hey Jesse! So let me throw my hat in the ring here and say I HIGHLY recommend and praise this game. Your reaction to Timberhearth inspired me to purchase and play this game and there has been no regrets since. This is one of those games that I agree with what others say about it: I wish I could forget this game so I can play it new again. To try to avoid too much spoilers of it, this game involves a lot of exploration between different planets and locations utilizing a spacecraft to unravel the mystery of the system and events that are happening. The payoff at the end is great and I still have yet to do the DLC as well. The music in this game that you've heard so far is very folk indie and beautiful to listen to, but there's more to the sound track than these peaceful songs as well, particularly one that is likely heard and dreaded by many a player many times. Hopefully some of those have made the list as well, and if not I should request myself! By the way, what I think you thought was an accordion is actually supposed to be a harmonica! Now I'm gonna do something a little different than usual and actually recommend to you, Jesse, a band that is very similar to these songs that I enjoy listening to. I discovered them listening to videos making tributes to this game. They're an Indie folk rock band called the Oh Hellos. Great to hear your reaction to these songs and look forward to the next!

Oh you absolutely have to play the DLC. For me subjectively, Outer Wilds is the best Video Game of all time - and Echoes of the Eye is better. After Outer Wilds i was curious what Mobius would be doing next. After Echoes of the Eye whatever they make next is an unseen instant buy, because while i don't know what it'll be, i know that i trust Mobius to deliver a great experience, no matter what it's about.

Outer Wilds is a game where instead of powerups or items, you use your own knowledge of the world to progress. So once you "know" something, it's done, it's a major part of the reason why you can never play this game again after the first time. No other game has scratched this curiosity itch of mine as well as this. One very impressive thing about this game is that it sets up certain rules and *everything* in this game follows those rules, to such a degree that it feels real (it helps that most things are rooted in reality, and everything fictional is very well explained in detail), you start thinking about puzzles in the context of these rules because you trust the game accounted for it, and it always does. This isn't one of those walking-sim "experience" games that you only play for the story either, I like those too, but I don't really consider them as games, Outer Wilds is the best *game* I have ever played and unfortunately cannot play again.
@Biosleeve5 ай бұрын
I think others have described the mechanics of this game enough detail, but the feel of it is incredible. Out of any game I've played, this one made me feel like an explorer - finding new worlds, exploring ancient ruins, following the clues of a mystery. I'd easily put it down as one of the greatest games of the PS4/Xbox One era, and the 20 hours it took to complete as some of the most the most memorable I've had in gaming.

Outer Wilds is a game that you can't ask questions about. No actual fan of the game will give you any answers, because the gameplay is ABOUT learning those answers. It is a true one time only experience, and considered by many to be one of the most creative and awe inspiring video games ever made. It is legitimately a life changing experience that cannot be experienced if you know anything about it beforehand.

Outer Wilds an exploration game, but also a detective/puzzle game. And it's all set in a tiny, handcrafted solar system. (the planets are like 100s of meters across, and only a few km between them) Figuring out what has happened to the extinct race of aliens that once dwelled in the solar system and left ruins everywhere is incredible. And all the progression is in terms of things you figure out, there's no physical upgrades inside the game, the only upgrades to get are your knowledge. That's exactly why it's also so incredibly sensitive to spoilers, since every spoiler you see is robbing you of actual gameplay.

This game is an incredible experience to complete, and is one of those games that can't be defined by its genre. Journey vibes are completely valid, but also this game plays nothing like Journey. The Outer Wilds are space, but the game prefers to reference wilderness exploration and frontiersmen rather than hard sci-fi for the overall feel. Yes the sun explodes and then time loops; the main hook of the game becomes exploring the frontiers to find the cause of both of these events, while also exploring and learning about the ruins of other civilizations that fell before your planet achieved spaceflight. The game presents themes of existentialism, hope, beauty, community, loss and what we leave behind.

If you pay attention the groove of the main theme follows the "tic tac" of a clock. This also happens in a few other tracks like in "Echoes of the Eye"
@FastRefleksX5 ай бұрын
If I'm not mistaken I think neither of these songs are actually heard in-game, and are just in the soundtrack. The main menu theme is a slightly more ambient rendition of "Outer Wilds" though. I think these might've been used for some trailers at some point. I might've commented the exact same thing on your Timber Hearth reaction, but that song is probably the *least* "ambient" song in the whole game. The Outer Wilds soundtrack is half folk/country/happy adventure music like that, and half eerie ambient sci-fi music. You've yet to hear any of the latter, which is where the soundtrack really shines IMO.

Outer Wilds is a unique gem. As some others have said, if you are at all interested in playing it avoid learning any more because a) it is amazing and b) exploring and discovering the world is the core of the game so potential spoilers can have much more impact than other types of game.
@herb21105 ай бұрын
The game's aesthetic is actually born from the combining of two clashing aesthetics. On one hand, you have the outdoorsy, campfire vibe with the guitars, banjos, and harmonicas, which represent the Hearthians, the humble species that your player character comes from. But there's a whole other side of the OST that you haven't really heard yet that utilizes droning synths, reverbed pianos, and big orchestral strings which coincides with the more high-tech sci-fi characteristics of the Nomai, the long-dead race of aliens that you investigate throughout the game. As you might imagine, the OST uses this dichotomy to convey a lot of meaning through the instruments and motifs used in each track.

The ideal experience with this game is to go in completely blind, and if you or anyone reading this wants that, STOP READING NOW. But if you want just the most surface level spoilers just to know what you’re getting into: Its a first-person space exploration game. You’re an alien living in a small solar system on a backwoods planet and you’re following an age old tradition of being an astronaut, following in the footsteps of those who came before. Theres no hand holding, you’re given no strict directions and you can go anywhere you want from the get-go. Theres no combat, as the game is all about exploration and puzzle solving. The only progress barriers are your knowledge of the world, and because of that, once you know how to beat the game, it can be done in mere minutes from a fresh playthrough. Its a game you can really only experience once, which is why its fans are so insistent you go in completely blind as ive heard it is a life-changing experience, so if this is enough info to get you to play, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP READING NOW. But if not, heres the hook: As you approach the end of your first hour of gameplay, the sun begins to expand, and ultimately, it goes supernova and wipes out the whole solar system. You then wake up right where you started. You’re stuck in a timeloop. Each time you wake up, you have 1 hour to explore the system, solve puzzles, and gain as much knowledge as you can before the sun explodes, and maybe, just maybe, theres someway to stop it, break the loop, and save the system. If you’ve read this far, I apologize for spoiling this surprise, but it is but the first of many. This is the extent of my knowledge as I havent even finished the game yet as a first playthrough will obviously take many, many hours. SO PLAY THE DAMN GAME AND EXPERIENCE THE REST YOURSELF.

Outer Wilds is an amazing game and best to know as little about is as possible before playing because everything is spoilers. That description of the game was a big spoiler, as you said you would have never expected that. OW is kinda its own genre and there will never be a game like it. This is a game where you look forward to growing old and getting dementia, or receive a serious head trauma, so you an experience it again for the first time. The only practical way to get close to this is vicariously watching others play through it blind.

And yeah, as other people have already stated: This is one of those games that people would give a lot for to erase their memory to have a second go at that first-time experience.
