If you ever decide to play this one, don't look anything up, don't ask anyone about it, click "not interested" on all the things KZbin tries to recommend to you, and just *play it blind* Its my all time favorite and also one of the most musically intimate games I've ever played

i second that. The epiphany the game brews inside you is a pretty unique moment, any spoiler, even if minor one, could mess it up. Go forth and adventure yourself, knowledge is out there in the Outer Wilds

This is one of the best games I've played recently. The music is a big part of what makes it so special. If you are ever looking for an off-stream game to play, THIS is the one I'd recommend 100000%. Thanks for the reaction and thanks to the requesters. Slight spoilers about theming below: And your comments about it sounding "very free," "trying to fly away" and "going outside into the woods" picking up a guitar and playing it are very fitting as to the nature of this game. And the low effort/simplicity/openness lends well to a feeling of being alone but not necessarily in a bad way as well as feeling very small in a big universe.

Ah, Timber Hearth, a song that is relaxing, and oddly nostalgic. Great to see Outer Wilds ost getting some more attention, it's worth the look.

I PayPal requested Jesse listen to Outer Wilds music probably like a year or two ago by now... Not this song, but I'm still so happy to see him get around to it, this game is truly special. It's an experience that made me have to lay down and soak in the ending for a while when I finished it.

Gah, I have such an emotional response just from those first few notes. This is one of my favorite games of all time and one of the few VGMs that gives me the shivers every time I hear it

Heyy, my favorite game made it here, so basically this game is the perfect definition of exploration and dread, but in a good way

I read a comment on Outer Wilds Reddit that summarizes the music of the game quite well: It's like a nostalgia for what you never experienced. And that's *very* on point for Outer Wilds. I love this game and I will say hearing "I know nothing about this game" is actually a positive: You want to play it without knowing much prior to it.

it was funny hearing him speculate about the game being cute/chill. i mean its technically spot on but still funny.

There's so much I could say about this game I don't even know where to begin. Basically, Outer Wilds is a sci-fi exploration/mystery game set in space. You travel to the different planets in the solar system uncovering the mysteries of an ancient technologically advanced race. All while you and the whole solar system is trapped in a time loop. That's more or less how the page on Steam describes it. Now this game's fanbase is religiously adverse to spoilers, so what I just wrote is pretty much the extent of what most fans will ever say about this game's story to someone who hasn't played it. And while the game does fit those genres i listed, it doesn't really paint the full picture. It's impossible to really explain how if feels to play this game, even with spoilers. So how to try and explain this song... This is the theme of the village on Timber Hearth, your home planet, and the first song you hear besides the main menu theme. Outer Wilds is very deliberate with how it uses music, and this songs purpose is first to introduce you to Timber Hearth and your fellow hearthians. Once the rest of the solar system is opened to you, this song is to welcome you home.

One of those games where once you've played it every song on the OST makes you emotional. What a wild experience. Really far out.

I cannot express how much I love this game, but I can give some context as to why Outer Wilds fans are so militant about spoilers; you progress in the game not by defeating any enemies or grabbing a power-up that lets you access new parts of the map. You progress by acquiring bits and pieces of knowledge about the world and applying that knowledge to solve the various puzzles the game presents you. Because the game is fundamentally information-driven, information itself "plays the game" for you.

My absolute favorite game and I'm not sure how another could top it. Masterpiece of a game I can only relive by watching other people play it for the first time. All the music from this game is very atmospheric. I think Rivers End is one of my favorites despite being from the DLC and also 14.6 Billion years

If any game ost would be proof that the context of music, beyond any restriction at all, is almost more important to it's impact than the song itself, i think it would be this one. I love Prahlow's work on this, but what still makes me tear up to this day is how it all worked together in the game.

The hearth is used throughout all of history as a metaphor for the safety and shelter of home (e.g. the hearth was so important that the Greek goddess of the hearth was one of the Olympians). It also contains the word "earth" and kind of sounds like it, which is relevant for this game about space exploration. As for whether the entire soundtrack is like this, it's not. Different parts of the game have very distinct musical identities (being vague here on purpose).

I agree with all your points except one: if hearth sounds too much like "earth" when you say it then you are doing it wrong. Lol

Fantastic as this song is, it means a whole hell of a lot more if you've played the game, strongly recommend. Also if you do play it, look up nothing ever lol. The entirety of progression is PLAYER knowledge, and one of the saddest parts is knowing I can never play it again for the first time
