Can we get this woman an Emmy already!This was a transcendent performance by a brilliant actress at the very height of her acting powers. If this show was on HBO, Netflix or Hulu, Caitriona would already have, at least, one Emmy on her mantle. STARZ has got to get their collective asses in gear and push these calcified awards entities into recognizing this treasure they have on their roster. I would also widen this task to include the egregiously overlooked work of Sam Heughan', too. If these award shows were actually about the task of assessing the BEST work and not whatever is hyped into the zeitgeist,, both Caitriona and Sam would have been recognized, years ago ,for the brilliant work they have been doing. . In any case, this performance is sure to make it easier for Caitriona to attain more quality roles beyond the Outlander Universe. I would love to see her in more movies.

Glad you included Sam in that statement, because he is every bit as good as Cait. She did get an award earlier though, after the "Faith" episode. And Sam also received one but in his own country, Scotland. But I think those were the only ones they received, but they deserved alot more. They are very good at their jobs. Season 6 doesn't look very good, getting blamed for things they didn't do. Why them? They have alot more cast members now, so why have everything blamed on them. Let them have some peace to heal for more than 15 minutes. Can't believe Roger and Bree ended up at the same place. Wonder how that happened. Very interesting the way they played out the rape. I had already thought something like that when I read what was going to happen. Shut your eyes and go with something nice that's happened, think about your marriage to Jamie and how happy you were when you fell in love with him. Just something to keep her in the Twilight Zone until it was over. As far as the awards go, don't hold your breathe. They have nothing to do with how good or bad an actor or actress they are, or the good work they do, I've always believed and still do, its who you know, but always hope they prove me wrong. They dont.

@@Razza1941 yea and Jaime's was more psychological cause he waited till Jaime was falling apart mentally along with physical by using his hair to remind Jaime of Claire which really hurt them physically for awhile, I don't think Claire is gonna have too much issues of having Jaime touch her and etc compared to what he had to deal with tbh. But I hope I'm not making her rape sound less worse cause it isn't cause she was gang raped but at least none of them bastards used Jamie as a way to violate her like Randall did. That's all I'm trying to say. But on a lighter note I loved the end of this episode when Claire was like I've been through too much shit to let this break me! Oh and marsali saying you hurt me, you hurt my family, and you hurt my ma! Oh that had me tearing up a bit and rooting for her. I freaking love marsali so much as a character on the show I barely notice how Fergus is kinda forgotten compared to how front and center he was in the second and third season. But I still wish they would develop Jamie and Claire's adopted kids especially Fergus more with Brianna and Roger. I know this scene is polarising so I thought I'd share my thoughts. Yes, there is a lot of rape in this series. However even today the statistic is 1 in 4 imagine what It would have been like 300 years ago. People are comparing Jamie's and Claire's depiction of rape. Jamie was not allowed to detach himself from the experience Randall was doing his best to psychologically and physically torture him. In the books it's only detailed in flashbacks. But when you're their with him through the experience you understand why he is so traumatised and broken after. I think it was quite groundbreaking as male rape is rarely shown in such a graphic level. It made it as horrifying as it should be particularly given that Randall was a sadist who wanted to completely break Jamie. With Claire it's not a better scene. She's beaten and gangraped. However the coping strategies and the attackers are different. The core reasons are the same to cause degradation and violence. However Randall had for years obsessed over Jamie every aspect of what he did was for the ultimate purpose of possessing him. These men whilst having a vendetta against Claire do no not share that desire or the same sadism as Randall. Jamie does to an extent attempt to depersonalise from the experience as he has hallucinations of Claire. Claire knows what is happening the attackers couldn't care less about her being mentally present. So she allows herself to detach to cope with the horror of what is happening. Both are very different equally emotionally turbulent experiences of rape.
@maryshaffer84744 жыл бұрын
They had Randall buying a child to rape as if it's everyday thing to him.
@poulomi__hari4 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I was trying to say. Jamie was so brutally tortured, that at a point his mind and body stopped fighting. He completely gave up. After that, Randall managed to make him enjoy the assault. So somewhere during those despicable hours, Jamie enjoyed the rape. And that broke his spirit, as he was later overcome by guilt. With Claire there was nothing such. It was a gangrape and she coped with it by her mental hallucinations. She probably went numb as she remembered nothing of it- who or how many. She felt nothing except pain, distress and fear. And the attackers weren't obsessed with sadistic instincts like those of Randall. Claire is shaken, humiliated, broken, but her spirit isn't. Jamie however, was destroyed. It took him a long time to come back but its amazing that he did!
@killerqueen44114 жыл бұрын
A Cool Million I think peoples quarm was that the violence was shown with Jamie and not with Claire. And I could to a degree understand why people find that an unequal display. However the writers are allowed to take creative liberties and show how victims cope with the attack differently. Other characters like Brianna and Ian didn't have the attack the shown it was only touched upon in their emotions after. In the books you're not their with Jamie in Wentworth whereas when Claire is raped she details the full experience. I find both scenes stir an equally emotional response with Jamies I was horrified. I was with Claire too but I felt as if I had attempted to retreat to this safe place with her. I can't stand when people say they just use rape as a plot decive. This series I think handles rape of both genders excellently probably one of the best displays I've seen. I'm also an ex fan of game of thrones and they had a tendency to throw rape here and there without any care as to how they approach it. I do wish an equal amount of credit had been given to Sam like it has Caitriona for acting. As from what I read he found the whole Wentworth ordeal extremely difficult to film. But that's just me.

That this heart wrenching but thoroughly insightful episode aired on Mother's Day here in the US was so much more than an amazing coincidence. While rape is certainly not the experience any of us would want our mothers to be associated with, so many mothers have been through experiences equally as traumatic in raising their families. Outlander honors women with the tragic and the beautiful aspects of womanhood that have been both neglected and exploited for eons. That we have actors as sensitive and intelligent portraying the best of manhood and womanhood in Sam and Caitriona has been a blessing to me. This series has been an inspiration as well as a consolation for promoting the mature emotional sensitivities we are all called upon to pursue in our lives. Humanity can gain inspiration from the wisdom taken by writers, actors and producers that this series exemplifies. Well done, Outlander!

Brilliant episode! Heartbreaking to watch, but the symbolisms... the dripping ceiling (everything was caving in), the orange (that she took when she asked the king to release Jamie from prison, her taking back power), the vase (that she had never owned, season 1)...in the 60’s scenes, how everyone was in 60’s wardrobe except Jamie, hugging her with his plaid)... brilliant writing, acting ... Catriona Balfe showed such vulnerability... amazing actress ... can’t wait for season 6!!
@annek50134 жыл бұрын
Julie W Thank you for your reminder of the brilliant use of symbols throughout this excellent episode. It added so much to my appreciation of the twelfth episode. The symbol of the house alone becomes a powerful extended metaphor for Jamie and Claire's marriage. If you go back to Book 2 Dragonfly in Amber, Claire and Jamie spend the night before their 20 year parting in the deserted house on the slopes of Craig na dun. Clair has to escape out the ramshackle back to make it up to the stones and back 200 years to Frank and safety, while Jamie fights for his life with 2 English soldiers breaking his nose. They are reunited in a brothel in Book 3 Voyager to show that they both have been damaged by their long separation when life has intruded on their marriage. Then when they travel to America in Book 4 Drums of Autumn, they live in a series of lean-to's and a cabin, then finally the big house in Book 5 The Fiery Cross, the new Lallybroch, where the roof leaks after Claire's rape in Book 6 A Brearh of Snow and Ashes and Jamie badly damages his already injured finger repairing the roof shingle. Jamie's remark in Book 1 Outlander that he has survived by eating grass expands into his telling Claire he was so damaged by Black Jack Randall that he had lived for 20 years hiding under a blade of grass but that she built him a lean-to. Diana Gabaldon's symbols are threads she has woven throughout the 8 existing novels. That she has been consistent in her use of these Figurative Language devices only adds to the artistry of her storytelling. That the writers, producers and actors have made use of these devices visually on the television series further enhances the brilliant work of a highly skilled author and reveals the beauty of a long term marriage where both partners have struggled for its survival. We the readers and viewers are the lucky recipients of artists who are skilled and generous in sharing their crafts to show us that marriage can be worth the struggle to create a place of refuge and beauty if its partners are willing to contribute to its survival equally.

Julie W Glad we could learn from each other, Julie. I totally agree with you on the high quality of the Outlander tv series. I'm hard put to say whether I prefer the tv series or the books. I love them both equally for the high quality of their use of their respective mediums. After rereading the first 6 books, I can only say there is much gold to mine there and I am thoroughly enjoying reading the books again. I will be starting to reread Book 7 Echo in the Bone this week. I was originally attracted to the Outlander story by first watching the tv series through Season 3, but having been an English teacher, I wanted more. The amazing details in the books enrich the tv series so much that I will probably never be without them thanks to Diana Gabaldon's curiosity and very thorough research. Droughtlanders are bearable for me now because I can always pick up the books to read again. I learned the value of rereading books that had depth to them when I was teaching. (I did a Masters Degree thesis on color symbolism in Tess of the D'Urbervilles.)There is so much to gain from multiple readings of books we love. Francis Bacon was right when he said "Some books are meant to be tasted..some to be swallowed and digested" or words to that effect. Enjoy your rereading. I look forward to hearing of your discoveries.

Being someone who understand disassociation from abuse experience as a child, a victims brain falls into a place, a dreamscape of some sorts, to help counter the trauma the body is going through at that moment. It's a coping mechanism to keep them surviving through the ordeal. I completely resonated with this because this is exactly what happens when a person disassociates. When this or any victim of assault or rape watches an episode or even a testimony in the Senate, the flashbacks come. There is no way to prevent them. Having been a victim, and having worked as a counselor for victims, I know this is the case. Even now, when I am old, the rapists dead, they may still wander through my mind, infecting moments. It isn’t that a victim gives their life to these, she doesn’t, and moves on. But evil haunts. That is why we know it as evil. Long dead, it raises fleshy bumps, and paints pictures in our minds. We lived in an age of “don’t tell, you will be punished” and society as well as the perpetrator did so. So, yes. It is necessary to tell this story well, because society, the perpetrator and the victim, still know it is the truth. The harder it is to tell this story, and still seek to tell its truth, the more likely we will change that societal and perpetrator’s threat to to falsehood.

I cant believe this show end beautiful that will come for next season again. Cant wait!

If I could give you 2 thumbs up, I would. Thought when I saw that the finale was going to be an hour & 50 minutes, I thought "Cool, they are really going to give enough time to this finale like they use to do in previous Seasons". Then to be tricked with that lame new Starz show really annoyed the hell out of me and disappointed me in the Outlander producers that the finale wasn't, in point of fact, longer. AND angry at the Starz people for their trickery. How could they do that most especially given the finale's subject matter. Very calous IMH. It has been awhile, but read all of GB's books. Looking forward to the last one when she gets it out, however, I knew this very difficult scenario was forthcoming even though they jumped ahead into the next book already. During this difficult time in the world when tv watching is especially an escape, this whole thing was not well thought out by the Starz people. If I had been interested in that new show, sure aren't now. And like we need a show about spoiled rich people and a murder mash up, oh, that's new material! ***NOT!

Caitriona's performance was incredible! But so was Sam's. If you go back and look at the expressions flickering in his eyes you can see so many things happening. He's very subtle and didn't try to detract from Cait. But his was a powerful performance. Cait's face is what I read. Sam's eyes are what I read. They are both sublime and have an amazing creative synergy together.

Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! So that's what Sam meant when he said "making love without making love". On the porch taking her hand, holding her safe at the end, picking her up and carrying her to the scene. Symbolism and insight is stunning. The depth and breathe of Jamie and Claire's love is finally back, come full circle. Please STARZ, sign for 7 & 8. We need this story now, in the face of adversity, more than ever. Fantastic episode, fantastic season. Going into this season I was nervous as for me the seasons had steadily gone from brilliant to very good to okay and finally to awful(season 4). This season reversed that trend. Starz kept much closer to the books, and for me this was the 2nd best season only bettered by season 1. So well done to the writers and producers keep it up. Even the twists like Bree and Roger and Jem trying to return to the 20th Century and not succeeding was cleverly done. Catriona did an awesome job in the last episode, but for me the most standout character from this season who has become one of my favorites is Marsali. I think Lauren did a fantastic job. I have a nasty feeling the droughtlander will be longer this time but we've got Bee's to look forward to and come season 6 more to be optimistic about. Well done!

Having just watched the season finale, it hasn't struck us quite yet, considering how intense it was... needing sometime to decompress! @@hankthepatriot3733 And the "Bees" mentioned by D. Bailey is the next book in the series "Go Tell The Bees That I Have Gone" by Diana Gabaldon, which hopefully will be released this year, 2020. Bees will be the 9th book in the series. The TV show Season 5 is primarily material from the 5th book, although it included some of the plot lines from the 6th book. I have not read the books but from the tweets preceeding the episode I kind of put together what was to come with Claire's abduction and all, so I prepared myself for the worst. It was not any easier to watch it though. I agree that the entire team of Outlander deserves a recognition for this episode. The way they have done it, by focusing not on the act of rape itself, but on how Claire endures it and how she tries to distance herself from it mentally - for she could not get away physically - was phenomenal. You could not see what was happening, but you could sure as hell feel it and suffer it with Claire. Caitriona did an amazing job, and so did everyone involved in the making of this episode. And also a few words of appraisal for Sam, John Bell, and Cesar as well - when they were standing over Claire, and claimed that they will kill for her as she cannot kill for herself.. It was such a powerful scene. I absolutely loved this finale. Wonderful job.

So well made, hats off to the writers, Caitriona and Sam♥️ also I love how Claire and Bree are such fierce, fearless women..they are not scared of men they are not docile, submissive creatures these criminals are used to and their ego is hurt by Claire's defiance. I think with the rampant misogyny of those times, systematic oppression of female voice, illiteracy..it would be a challenge for women of modern times with strong opinions to survive unscathed. 😔

Chapeau bass. In my opinion, episode 512 and the Wedding episode, will go down in the history of film art. I watched the whole episode breath in. Reading a book in a place of rape .... I cried. The authors brilliantly showed the importance of the role of a loving man, care, support and safety. I am glad that the declaration of love was quoted straight from the book ... these are beautiful words. Thank you all for your emotions. Thank you to the author of the book Diana Gabaldon for creating a story that is multi-layered, detailed, interesting and inspirational ... brilliant. I am looking forward to further emotions in Part 6 :)

I've watched it twice. Powerful and superbly acted episode. I didn't think I would like the "dreamscape" element, but with the song it was just haunting. That said, I'll be that person and point out my pet peeve: it's "dissociate," not "disassociate." They are two different, albiet related, things. Her 'finding her happy place' to insulate her mind from the trauma is dissociation.

@@hinahinananoha7783 i think it's not "liking" the scene, because if you like it you're definitely as mad as these men, but it's about liking the fact that they didn't hide what would have happen in reality. at this time of history (and all along history) if a gang of men capture a woman (+ here they capture her because she wrote an article for women to be more free from their men so they hate her even more) then you can't close your eyes and be like "they won't do anything, or they might beat her a little bit" no. we all know what would happen and this episode doesn't hide it.
