Outlast was an exquisite blank page to find scary textures and to create an homage to classic horror movie soundtracks. For the music of Outlast 2, it was important to both Red Barrels and myself to have a really different score from the first game. I was challenged to make a soundtrack that was as interesting and authentic as the first one, but with a unique approach and fresh musical palette. The great quality about horror is that it allows for creativity. I wanted to push the boundaries and challenge conventions with this score. I wanted to create something more physical, brutal, and raw, but it also had to be original, adventurous and bold. I went away from the orchestra for Outlast 2. This score features recordings of guitar, banjo, acoustic bass and experimental percussion. I then distorted and tweaked them through modular filtering to amplify the eerie quality of the music. It’s a way to extend my musical palette, starting from accessible and making it inaccessible. For the soundtrack release, I wanted to create a concept album. It was important to me to tell my own interpretation of the story. Although the game's narrative is quite gruesome, in the end, this journey has been a very personal one, as I have explored my own fears and touching the darkest and more sensitive sides of my soul through the music. I hope you will appreciate the experience -- I really enjoyed creating it. Samuel

The original Outlast's soundtrack felt claustrophobic and haunting, Outlast 2's soundtrack makes you feel like you have enough room to freely roam around, but nowhere to truly hide; which obviously fits the gameplay. What I also like about it is that the chase themes make you feel like you're outside, sprinting and feeling the wind on your face as you're desperately trying to not get snuffed by an animalistic lunatic, whereas Outlast 1 made you feel like you were inside with limited possibilities of where you can run. Obviously there are times where you are inside/outside in both games, and the soundtrack always changes in tone slightly. I've said this before, but the soundtracks are like makeup to the scenery; they complement each other greatly. I'm aware they're using a different composer for the Outlast Trials, but I'm hoping you get to have some influence over Outlast 3, because you really know what you're doing when it comes to sound and music.

@@Kiloeve Did we ever get a reason why they changed composers? I mean, OL:T's soundtrack isn't bad by any means, but it does get very repetitive with the one single chase music in the entire goddamn game.
@Kiloeve4 ай бұрын
@@beetheimmortal My guess is that either Samuel didn't want to do it, and/or they cut short on some corners and went for another composer. Like the game, the music in Outlast Trials feels too generic to me, but that's just my viewpoint. Although I think Outlast 2 had similar issues with the 2nd half of the game, using the same heretics chase theme 10 times. This is in spite of them having tonnes of unused music, which I think would've worked better, particularly Val's sneak music in the 2-switches section.
@beetheimmortal4 ай бұрын
@@Kiloeve Yeah, I agree with pretty much all of this. That's too bad. From what I gather, Outlast 2's development was kind of a shitshow anyway, maybe that's why they never made a DLC either. I guess it took a lot of work to make the UE3 engine look that good.

It took me a few listens to allow this soundtrack to grow on me. (mainly because I didn't enjoy the game as much as I enjoyed 1 (developer decided to use some schlocky gimmicks that pulled me right out of my immersion and into laughter, unlike 1 were it was a feeling of constant pressure even though there wasn't anything there to be scared of, although that's your fault haha)) However, listening and analysing this as a standalone, there is such an intimacy with the strings, the harmonics carefully and beautifully captured. It isn't bombastic and over the top, the strings are captured close mic and oooft, boy do I love that sound. No where enough composers utilise string work like you do. You did it in outlast 1, and I think that was one of the major reasons I got dragged into the game. Harmonics and string abuse creates such a strong frisson in me. Goosebumps everywhere. Your motiff recalling every so often, broken up on a music box, even then there is tremolo damaged sounding strings. ❤️ To you sir for making this amazing and breathtaking artwork.

I guess, thank you for being bold and making something you believed in. I'll try the game again, I bought it on release. Just need to get over "those scenes" Hope you're involved with #3.
