I shop at Outlets all the time. I know it's not the same quality..but I can't afford to shop retail all the time. The stuff I have bought at the outlet lasts long enough for me..just take care of it and it shouldn't be an issue. If someone spots I have an outlet Kate Spade purse..kudos to them. I don't care. I buy what I like and what I can afford.

I agree, the consumer has to decide what he is willing to pay for the item they hold. I am not going to keep clothes for years on end anyway so I would rather spend less on slightly lower quality (as long as it fits and looks nice) because I will want something different in a couple years. I don't get rid of stuff after 1 season.

G W. III I bought a pair of Nikes from the outlet store years ago. This was long before I was educated about the difference in quality. Nevertheless, I could tell they looked different from the ones at the Nike Store or Footlocker. There was something slightly off about the quality. At the time I didn’t really care because I was college age. I didn’t have a lot of money, and I only bought them for occasions trips to the gym.

The outlet's nice for getting clearance Air Jordans, though they only get very few of the older styles that are left over so you'd have to be checking pretty frequently. Managed to get a pair of AJ XXXII "MVP" when Nike discontinued them, which was exceptionally lucky as only 2 sizes were available on the clearance wall. I also pretty often see some of the styles from Nike's online store at a cheaper price, but they're for the most part the least interesting colorways the brand would offer for a shoe. So it's a bit hit and miss but occasionally you could get lucky and grab something real nice.

With Nike I do think it's more of a destination for their lesser popular styles and slow movers. I see the same cheap nikes at the outlet for 29.99 that I see at TJMaxx for $39.99 and Kohls for $49.99. And the apparel....I find the exact same pieces at the retail stores as I had found in outlets....I do notice that I don't pay an incredible discount at the outlet...it's usually only about 20% less. Sometimes more...but not often. However that 20% is still better then paying full retail.

The problem is that a lot of people can't understand what makes something high quality, i.e stiching, material, fasteners... the issue with this is fast fashion. Often we buy things because they are cheap and we think we are getting a "deal" when really this low quality just results in us buying more stuff in the long run.

you get what you pay for, but if you're getting a good deal for slightly lesser quality what's the big deal? for example i got a $40 Kate Spade wallet at an outlet store and the "original higher quality" one was $250. I've been using for 4 years, its still in great condition and i get many compliments on it to this day. my taste in style will change before it'll ware down.
@julijakeit
@julijakeit 6 жыл бұрын
I see your point. Some people will pay anything with a designer tag, even a knock-off and it's ok if that makes you happy. But when you pay 40$ expecting it to be worth 250$ for the brand which people see as a higher value, better quality, longer lasting items, when I would feel cheated. And that's what these scammers turned out to be. They mislead you with the 'outlet' sign instead of saying 'mass production'. It's like buying H&M wallet for 4$ with a name tag of Kate Spade. For some people even 40$ is a big money.

After working at an outlet store in high school I told everyone the truth. Every once in a while we’d get a sweater or something from retail and the quality and style was much better than the outlet stuff. And the cheaper stuff was priced at 70$ and there was always a “sale” from 20-30% off to make you feel like you’re getting a better deal, but you’d still be paying more than you should.

I think most people have the idea that outlets have left over stock and I do think that used to be the case. Now with online shopping most retailers can get rid of their leftovers online with supersales. Also, outlet shopping is so popular that there is no way that left over merchandise could meet the demand.
@vrillco
@vrillco 8 жыл бұрын
That's exactly it. Early outlet stores would set up in low-rent areas to liquidate overstocked goods. By reducing overhead and adjusting consumer expectations, this allowed them to still make a profit on something that would not have sold otherwise. The flea markets of yesteryear are a perfect example of this tactic. Modern outlet stores are a very different beast, really just a different imprint of the brand. It's not much different than Levi Jeans selling lower-quality products into Walmart to hit a lower price point, and thus capture a different market, one that would not pay for its full-priced flagship items.
@KarinWilcox
@KarinWilcox 8 жыл бұрын
Back in the day before "retail" outlets became a thing it was a way for retailers to offload their off season items and items that didnt sell. They would offer them 1-2 seasons after their retail debut at a discounted price. If your seeing similar items at Retail as the Outlet you can be 100% sure they are NOT the same quality. I noticed this at the Coach outlet near me. While I do shop there I go their to look for the rare random retail returns that end up in their store. Very rare and usually they will only have 1 of that item and your best place to actually find them are in the clearance areas. The zippers, Lining and quality of leather are the big tells.

In my local outlets for coach and kate spade there is actually a corner of the store that houses "from retail store" items. They are often excluded from the "50% +20%" sales and more often like 30-50% off. Sometimes you can even find pieces in that area marked down even further. This is often due to pieces that aren't selling within the season or returned pieces...sometimes even slightly damaged. I got my friend a $700 bag from Kate spade retail at the outlet for $125...because one of the metal hoops connecting the bag to the strap had a small gouge in it. The sales associate pointed it out to me before I purchased. It wasn't even noticeable as it was inside the hoop. My friend had been seriously considering buying it at the mall the previous week! She couldn't believe I got it for her...she wouldn't accept it until I showed her the reciept and the small ding in the metal. She was so happy!!

To get your bargins, go to the retail store and shop at end of season, that is where you would get a deal on the real item, though it may be out of it's fad state then. Also a retail thing is to use percentages as oppose to dollar amounts, people tend to believe they are getting a better deal (instead of doing the math themselves). For example an item that is $10.00 on sale for $9.00 is better to advertise as 10% off instead of the dollar amount because people feel like they are getting a better deal. You need to be a smart shopper and not just believe in advertising. And learn to do the math that you thought was useless in school.

i really hate this "it will last longer" at home I wear my fathers old pullover, that is probably hmmm 50 years old, and looks perfect. If not that they are in size L, i would wear them all winter long. Probably it was not cheap, but in 70s my father had maybe 2 or 3 sweaters in his wardrobe and he lived in mountains! Nowadays i have 10 sweaters (mostly made by myself), and none of them is so warm as the old one

ChindoggOriginal Thats why when i pay less i know the quality is less too. But im ok with it since I'm broke 😂 But yes when I pay more I expect it to be good quality. You know when it's sale time. Even the sale price is more than you pay for so people are willing to pay a bit more for a brand but turns out poor quality is sad. For example if I normally buy $10 clothes. I know quality is low. But if I want a good top that I know is $2000 but in sale is $1000 I would pay more than my budget $10 for the for brand. Normally I can't afford $1000 but I am for the brand. So if I don't get good quality it feels cheated. I thought it was cheap because end of year or month sale as they need to throw out what doesn't sale. People I think thought the same so of course they are upset😞

im old enough to remember when Outlet stores was a new concept, and back then they did sell for-retail items that often didnt sell in their retail stores. the thing is as time wore on, consumers would only window shop at the retail stores and wait for them to hit the Outlets before purchasing. which for major labels is a loss in profit (it doesnt matter what they actually spent to make that item and marked it up x10, they expected it to sell x10, not at the discounted price). but because Outlets became so immensely popular, labels started to create "for-outlet" only products to keep the money coming in, but not having to spend as much as they would knowing they would earn less for each item anyway. thats kinda the worst kept secret in the retail industry that i guess people who never worked retail a day in their life wouldnt know. and yes those "mark-down" prices? totally a psych trickery to get people to think they're saving more so that they would actually BUY. both physical shops and online stores are guilty of this. unless you actually remember or take a screenshot of the item and compare that to the actual "sale" price then thats the only time you can be sure you are actually saving money. and most of the time, the sale price is actually not much different from the previous regular price, sometimes the sale price is even higher than the actual previous regular price.

I was literally just going to say pretty much the same thing. I remember in the early '80s when outlets were a new thing. People were a bit nervous to shop there, thinking they were getting damaged or unpopular stuff. The stores did a big campaign saying it was a seasonal rotation and the product was still in great shape, just you were looking at coats in July. Once people understood that, outlets took off. I got my bridesmaid dresses at an outlet in 1989. Full length gowns for $30 each. I was super excited. In the late 90s I went to an outlet store and realised exactly what you said; companies understood we were waiting to get a deal and then created cheaper knock-off products and sold them through outlet.

I agree. In 2001 I used to work at Club Monaco on 5th Ave. if we couldn’t fit merch into our stock room it would go straight to outlet while still being full price on 5th Ave. I went many times Bc it was an even better deal than our employee discount. They closed the outlet and never made a for outlet line. I did notice the other stores begin to carry for outlet only lines. Sad that ppl didn’t notice or care. They just wanted to wear the brand name. I wouldn’t accuse or companies are doing this just because their outlets. I would just really try to be educated as a consumer what a good quality product is and don’t pay for it if it isn’t whether at a discount or not.

Exactly! And, technically, the stuff in the outlet stores are still genuine since they are made by the same exact company that manufactures the retail products. It's so ridiculous to be this picky. I think it's just a lot of butt hurt people who bought full retail price items because they didn't think to shop at the outlet first. I have both retail Coach and outlet Coach. I barely notice a difference. In fact, my outlet purse has outlasted my retail purse (both purchased in the same year. It's true The quality isn't the same but as a business stand point why would you sell a purse of the same fine leather at an outlet price??? Outlets protect the identity of a brand. If companies kept shipping "old" "clearance" retail products to outlets then customers will eventually catch on, never buy from retail and just wait for it to be shipped to the outlets. As the owner of a business wouldnt you want to cater to more customers???? More customer means different lifestyles. Different lifestyles means different finanacial datura'

Surprise. Most people in the world are not ethical...shocker. Any adult should realize that companies are in business to make money. Period. I can't believe this woman is so aggravated that she was mislead. Maybe she is aggravated because she is nice and honest and hates to see anyone be dishonest for more profit, or maybe she is just an entitled upper middle class American. Whichever it is, she should grow up. It's her responsibility to educate herself on what she considers to be a worthwhile purchase for her, and what she is willing to spend for it. Buying something because someone says it's a good price, rather than because you truly need it or want it, intentionally shopped for it, and would be willing to pay more for it is why our landfills and homes are now overflowing with stuff.

Better buys are found at thrift stores, consignment shops and Goodwill stores. Recent scores include a pullover shirt from Chicos, a vintage leather Fossel handbag, a new Sak crochet handbag ( tags still attached), and a Claudio Firenza Italian leather handbag. Total cost:$29. Everything is in great shape and very clean. Three skirts, 1 cotton twill and 2 linen, $6. Just so you know, I buy only natural fabrics and I prefer classic designs so lean toward Ralph Lauren, Liz Claibourn, New Directions, Ruby Road and other a few other similar makers. This was very informative. I am planning to study fashion design, so this is great. My family has never really gone to any lengths of buying designer brands at all, so I had no idea of what differences retail and outlet products might have between them or even that they were two separate things. I do not personally think that it is a rip-off exactly. It is more a case of “you get what you pay for.” The higher quality line would cost more to produce and would therefore cost more for consumers. You get lower, more affordable prices for the outlet ones because the materials and sometimes labor are sourced less expensively. If you still want to have the luxury of “designer” name brand things, but can only afford outlet-quality, I think it is perfectly fine to have the option to get slightly less quality items at lesser prices as long as the difference is not too steep.

I feel better getting from the source and being petite with small feet, I have a better chance of finding my size. I just check feedback and how much shipping is. Often shipping is free or close to it. Wearing pants (with front pockets-hard to find here) and a sweater right now with excellent stitching and comfort level. I get lots of complements on the jewelry, shoes and dresses I get. Sometimes the retailer I buy from throws in a gift like a bracelet, hair tie, fancy shoe laces, gift tags or extra matching buttons (like I used to find with shirts bought here). Very few duds.

I figured this out some time ago when I was seeing an inflated price ($50.)on a simple top that had $20. marked under it as the for sale price. I thought there is no way this top is worth $50.! I knew these stores were falsely over pricing their products so they can say they were marked down. I wondered how they were getting away with this as I think it is unfair advertising and a rip off. I noticed this first at Kohl's and then at other stores as time went on. I'm glad this is getting exposed so people won't be so trusting.

I disagree when it comes to Winners. I've been shopping at Winners for many years and being a cost conscious person with manufacturing background, I use the comparative price as a reference. It is a retail price and not a discounted price. I have an idea how much the product is worth based on quality. Ideally I purchase the product when first arrived brand new with all tags and I try on and check for defects. If it meets my requirement and the price is right, I'll buy the product. I find Winners has fair pricing, Return policy and great customer service. I've found many favorites from Winners and will continue to shop there.💗

I worked for coach factory and Columbia outlet store both for over a year. The compare price is a lie. Colombia outlet is currently in a lawsuit. The coach factory bags are cheap and they still charge you 150 or higher. Best to just go to designers normal stores. Yes these companies create their own knockoffs.

As a frequent outlet-goer I have to say that there are items specifically made for the outlets HOWEVER you also see a good bit of overstock from many big brands. The overstock usually has less variation (like only one item in one size) and sells for a much larger price then other items in the same category (for example, bags which are made for the outlet are usually around $20-50 and overstock is usually closer to $100 or more depending on the brand). So you can still score a phenomenal deal if you visit the outlet frequently and meticulously search for a specific brand to pop up.

in actuality, it depends on the sale & the item(s) . I am an outlet lover BUT I always do my research before purchasing. For Coach outlets, I only get items that are outlet exclusive, items that I cannot find at a local Coach retail store. Quality wise varies from item to item. Outlets aren't all that negative BUT when they claim to have a sale, do the math & be sure to do your research. Sometimes I prefer paying full price for items based on quality, but most of the time the items at outlets are way better quality than the local retail store. That's just my input . Outlets back then were a place where they can send their off seasonal or out of season items to be sold at a lower price . Big bargains or not it depends on the brand and each person's reference .

Also, factory outlet stores have never sold any original items! I could have told you that when I was 12. Outlet stores are boring and uninspiring and lack the style found in the original. If you want polos, plain t shirts, chinos, etc, then go to the outlet by all means.

I have also bought high end products that have fallen apart from retail stores quite quickly. Retail doesn't necessarily mean high quality. I always google retail prices in Winners and their compare prices are almost always much lower than the retail price. And when they had the people compare prices on the computer with the compare prices, most were accurate and a lot they couldn't find the item to compare the price. The whole thing about Winners was ridiculous and not well done. And that woman practically crying over $30 pants. Get over it! I bought a $25 pair of jeans from Winners 10 years ago that still look great because I take care of my clothes. Someone needs a life! I will continue to shop at Winners (and no, I do not work for Winners).

The thing about price is subjective. Value is what you are willing to pay. If you think something is worth it, just by looking at it and seeing the workmanship then you have to make a decision. Who is this program made for anyways? People that get upset if they think they paid too much? Sound like they have too much time on their hands. You can save money shopping around for sure, but it does cost you time and if it take you 3 hour of your life to save an extra 20.00 buddy u have issues.

Here's the thing. You just have to look at the product in front of you in the outlet, inspect the quality, and ask yourself, "Am I willing to pay $___ for this product today?" The price it was originally available for somewhere else, or the "compare at" pricing is irrelevant to deciding if you've gotten a good deal. Trust yourself to know how much something should cost based on the materials used, quality, craftsmanship, labour etc, and decide whether it is a good deal on those characteristics. Don't listen to what a company initially appraised their own product at because they are inherently biased.

great comment and indeed the smart shopper will get the same for less. the problem here is that you don't get the same for less. you get less. much less for what's suppose to be the same as a retail quality. even looks differ, as seen later on in the video. if you only care for the brand logo and can afford to waste money for worse quality and buy new items more often, that's great and go for it. for some, 200$ bag suppose to last for years and not get damaged within a season!

I dont feel that it is a rip off. Only delusional and entitled people think they should be paying less for the same quality because they are some how special. Its only fair that products that cost less cut corners to save costs. I dont mind paying less for a generic zipper instead of a name brand zipper. Nobody is going to check the brand on your zipper. Most people who aren't in the fashion industry wont be able to tell the difference. Maybe the outlet pants dont last as long, but honestly most people dont wear the same pair of pants for 10 years, so the better quality is wasted.

Most people seem to think that outlets sell last season's or leftover goods that haven't sold. you dont know anything about quality if you think it doesnt matter. The quality of zipper does matter. And if your shopping at a store selling you JCrew khakis at a discount stating they are $125 retail but on sale for $60 you expect them to be same as the retail they are comparing them to. The zippers for example while you may not understand the difference I do. YKK are very common very cheap zippers used in many many bargain clothing items. Nothing wrong with that. But when your paying a premium for a premium product I want a better zipper. The YKK zippers give out much quicker, they wear down faster, they get bent tines which keeps them from zipping I could go on and on and that $60 pair of khakis turns into $120+ pair when you have to repurchase them every 3-6 montts. When the retail pair of better quality will lat you until the material starts to give way. The outlet pants are made of a much lower quaility fabric weave is looser the mix used in the weave is not as sturdy. You really need to understand what your talking about before you can really say oh its the basically the same. Your cheating yourself by shopping there.
