In my part of the UK, they replaced the old type of lamp posts and all LEDs. Not only the upgrade paid for itself in under 2 years. But due to a lot less power needed for lighting the same circuit/power cables can now be used for slow-charging cars overnight and up to 4 cars can be plugged into a socket with is part of the lamppost for on street parking and charging

We already had new (old tech) lights in the lamposts many years ago. So it was very dim at night. Now they are replacing the lamps in the city to LED, and they said it was around $5.4 million, and would lower the energy needed by 30%. (they used something called high pressure sodium-lamps before). They said they thought they would save money cause you dont have to service led lamps as much. (A 100w sodium lamp is equal to a 1000w halogen lamp) so if the city had halogen lamps, it would be a big saving (and a lot of electricity to use :)

Can't say without more info. Could be a brand new installation, just now ramping up, or just getting new cars. You see the scraps from wrapping the cars are still on the floor. It makes sense to have large numbers of 22kW AC in car parks, especially if you can put canopies and solar in at the same time. Man, my parents rented a "Model Y equivalent" (lol), Genesis GV80, to come visit us this last week. From DEN to FoCo, then we went up and over, through Black Hawk, to Manitou and back. We were actually very impressed (for a Genesis). They got here with over 85%, we topped up, charged a little j1772 in Lyons (maybe 8%, over breakfast) then only tried a chargepoint DCFC in Manitou before heading back. The chargepoint DCFC was embarrassing. 42kW... so we only added about 10% to CYA. Overall, we practically went from FoCo-Manitou and back on one charge. It was actually really cool to charge off the Solar Roof at home, since we normally only charge the Leaf. I'd only used it at 3.3kW until they visited, and then we charged at 9.4kW using the GV80. I guess the main takeaway was that Chargepoint is only barely better than AC we've got at home. IDK if my Mom could comprehend the lost opportunity of not getting a Tesla rental, but maybe next time she will.

They should seriously consider one leg 277/480 v 3p L2. Tesla absolutely supports 277v a/c. Even at 80% of 20A that’s 4.4kW , using super inexpensive NACS Leave them plugged up, use the DCFC for rapid turn around times. So one 480v 3 pole 20A would feed 3 tesla at 4.4kW. That’s super efficient and cheap. They could run dozens of 20A small connectors. I think that will also be the biggest improvement to airport parking. 277v would be cheaper to deploy and reduce voltage sag. Using 20A would dramatically lower the cost for placing dozens of connections at a site

I didn't know about those charging in that area. If you talking about grid lock, that is cause you in Williamsburg, it use to be fine driving before DOT meddled with it and made it considerably worse. It is now pretty much the worse place to drive in the city now, and that not just for cars, if you are on a bike or a scooter it is just as bad. There are off streets in NYC where I don't even meet up with cars and try driving Time Square after 11pm on weekday, it is like in a ghost town. If you are in Gowanus, I there was (or is) charging at the Whole Foods and it has a cool roof garden. And I heard Koppal Ford in Queens installed something, and there use to be one independent one on Queens Blvd (Highway 25) at the Zombie Carwash, but since they closed the fast charger looks blocked off. I just shake my head at this stuff. I live in a state that has adopted California's Advanced Clean Cars II regulations -- you know, all new cars in 2035 must be zero emission, or "battery electric" given today's woeful "technology." And don't forget -- that regulation starts in TWO YEARS, with 35% of new cars being required to be zero emissions in 2026. And going up 8% every year from that, until it reaches 100% in 2035. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, KYLE, somewhere probably closer to HALF THE POPULATION IN THIS COUNTRY rents or lives in housing where THEY CANNOT CHARGE A BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLE AT HOME. So, HOW ON EARTH do you expect a jump from somewhere around 5% of vehicles today, all the way to 35% or 100% in the future is going to work, when somewhere around HALF OF THESE VEHICLES will need to sit for an hour at a public charging station, in order to charge up to 100%? And yes, if you're going to waste so much time "filling your vehicle with energy," you ARE going to charge it up to 100%, and everyone else in line can FREAKING SIT THERE AND WAIT. People will go shopping, go to lunch -- whatever -- and keep an eye on when any idle charges might kick in. We have busy gasoline stations -- the busiest in my area being Costco stations -- that fuel somewhere around 500 to 600 vehicles per hour. All the way up to "100%," which works out to be around 400 to 600 miles of range, depending upon vehicles. So, what does it take to charge up 500 battery electric vehicles to 100%? AN ENTIRE WALMART PARKING LOT! Or thereabouts. So, every time you visit a charging station in a Walmart or other large parking lot, you NEED to be thinking about how that will eventually have to be a place where EVERY parking spot also needs to be a "public charging spot." Putting your little parking garage to absolute shame. If we don't build public charging stations in that kind of quantity, you WILL be sitting in line for hours, waiting to get to a charger. So get ready. If and when you start looking into the future of "battery electric vehicles forced upon renters who cannot charge them at home," then I'll start watching your videos again. I just roll my eyes at stuff like videos with a few dozen Teslas crammed into a parking structure.

I am SOOO glad that Kyle stopped in NYC. As Kyle noticed, going 1 mile in NYC can be a major pain in the neck. So if I live in Queens, or some other part of Brooklyn, it would be a long painful effort to get to one of these 2 Revel Hubs. I know more of these hub locations are coming and one will be in Queens, not too far from me, but that will take a long time until it is fully operational. There are 150Kw chargers at JFK airport, but who wants to drive to the airport unless you're getting on a plane. All that to say that having an EV if you don't have a *convenient* way to charge is not a good option at this time. I cant wait to hear about the Flo A/C chargers on the street. It's so hard to find a parking spot and I imagine these street Flo chargers are either ICE'ed or someone leaves their EV blocking the Flo charger after their vehicle is charged.
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl Жыл бұрын
On-street Level 2 EV charging in a place like NYC is going to be very tricky, given that the value of the parking space far exceeds the value of the electricity you can put into the car at level 2 speeds, on a per-hour basis. This means that if the charger's parking space is priced solely on the cost of the electricity, everybody with an EV or plugin hybrid will try to park there, whether they need the charge or not. Some drivers will even intentionally throttle down their car's charging speed so that they can legally remain parked cheaply for longer. This means that people who really do need to charge their cars will be very unlikely to find an available space, even if the "EV charging only" rules are universally obeyed (which, in practice, they will not be). Alternatively, the chargers can be priced based on the fair market value of the parking space, rather than electricity, which, by definition, means that there will be at least one open parking space per block at all times (the actual price of NYC street parking tends to be far lower than this, which is why they are always full). This way, EV drivers who really need a charge will be able to get one, but the electricity will be very expensive, as such a move effectively asks people who are already paying for a monthly (non-charging) garage parking space to pay for parking a second time in order to charge their car. For these reasons, I think level 2 street charging makes sense in mildly dense urban areas (maybe the outer boroughs of NYC), but in places like Manhattan, where the real estate is very expensive, I think the only charging that is going to be both reliable and anything close to affordable is going to have to be DC fast charging, since that is the only way to put electricity into the battery at a fast enough rate where the fair cost of charging is actually dominated by the electricity, rather than the use of the parking space, and even then, it may be necessary to charge by the minute, rather than the kWh, so that drivers are not induced to clog up the charger, top-charging to 100%, simply to avoid paying for parking elsewhere.
@hotshotxi
@hotshotxi Жыл бұрын
No idea what you're talking about here. Most street parking in NYC is free currently. If those spaces required paying for electricity it would be a net revenue generator for the city
@pilozm
@pilozm Жыл бұрын
@@hotshotxi The *value* of the free parking spot is tremendous because so many folks have to compete for a very limited number of legal parking spots. The City will not get any revenue. The vendor, Flo, might eventually recoup the money they spent to get the Flo charger installed. The number of regulations are tremendous even with the City "helping" them deploy these street A/C chargers. I see the beginning of a Flo charger installation in lower Manhattan that has not been activated yet. It's been like that for over 9 months. This is not about revenue. It is about the extreme challenge to charge an EV in a dense City unless you have a house.

What if you built tunnels specifically for electric vehicles to move around the city. Several vehicles could be linked together to increase capacity. They would circulate on fixed routes 24/7 so there is no need for an app. The best part is that you wouldn't need charging infrastructure if you can deliver power to the moving vehicles along their route. I hope a city like NYC will be forward thinking enough to try this one day!

The next step would be for Revel to offer a valet charging service to overnight guests of hotels near their charging hubs. Imagine being able to just park your car at the hotel and having valet attendants take car of the charging for you, spending the night cycling cars in and out of the fast chargers so that their customers don't have to. It would not be cheap. But, as the number of EVs on the road increase, I think there are definitely people around that would pay for the convenience, and anyone parking a car overnight in NYC probably has a lot of money to spend anyway. Of course, to this, some would reply "but, if you're parking all night, why not level 2?". To which I would reply that the supply of level 2 chargers in Manhattan is extremely limited, and finding one that allows overnight parking and is not broken, occupied, or ICEd, anything but easy. Also, a model where cars block level 2 chargers all night to charge only half the night is not a particularly efficient use of very limited charging space. A DC charging hub, backed by valet parking attendants to plug, unplug, and shuffle cars around, seems much more scalable when the number of EVs that need to be charged every night gets large.

I live in NYC with My LRMY. The reason we need charging is that we need to run sentry mode! other than that its charging once every 2 weeks or so... When I didn't have a charger in my parking garage I'd do a lot of charge and eat dinner nights once a week. We are eternally miffed that they don't have much charging in Manhattan proper that doesn't cost $30 an hour to use.

As a former rideshare driver, and current Insurance Broker who writes Rideshare endorsements, Revel to me is a Taxi company, as the drivers don’t own the cars they drive, and thus aren’t sharing their own cars. They are employees of a Taxi company that happens to use EVs.
