Honestly the 2019 is probably the best used EV you can buy today. Still looks almost exactly the same as the 2024 model, still has better tech than the vast majority of vehicles on the road, still looks amazing and the 2019 can be bought for just $30-40K. Probably the best bang for your buck overall in the EV world, can’t think of any other used EV that would be better.

I honestly agree. I owned a Premium Plus E-Tron. And to the gentleman who said a new Tesla for 30-40k. The E-tron is bigger than a 3 or Y. The cabin is dead silent like a luxury vehicle, metal accents on the window switches and little knick knacks feel amazing and don’t fade or break like plastic would. I’ve driven a Y and the regen and drive feel is night and day. Plus the air suspension eats up any uncomfortable bumps. Not accounting that the sound system is based around the cars acoustics which is one of the best. I had a 2018 S4 which is the same speaker number and B&O but didn’t even hold a candle to the E-Tron. They’re two different vehicles. It’s comparing a Honda Civic to a German luxury car. Not saying the Tesla is bad, it’s a great economical vehicle is easily attainable but they if you can snag used one that is CPO’d then the E-Tron every time. I was paying $530 with tax on a lease for it. Got a crazy discount during Covid. I had to return it and miss it every day. But the Q8 E-Trons are getting crazy discounts right now and going for $499 again in CA. I’ve been waiting on it. Just giving my take. They’re both great at what they do.

Battery % is one button push away on the Q8 eTron (as it was on the earlier model). In the old etron you can add your battery % in shortcuts making it one button push away. In the q8 eTron, battery % is one button push away on the bottom central screen, middle at the top. It shows a cable and plug and pressing that gets you straight to % battery. I've just swapped from eTron 55 sportback to Q8 eTron estate. No change in efficiency but I get around 65 miles more range from my (very cheap) off peak charging which, on road trips, means lower overall cost. It doesn't offset the additional cost of a new car but I like getting new cars 🙂. On UK cars you can swipe the map and we get the fancy headlights, but no massage even on top spec models, not sure why, maybe it's the sports seats.
@lmjabreu Жыл бұрын
Looks like this Q8 has Homelink where the battery shortcut would be (12:02). I prefer CCS2 with Supercharger access, matrix headlights, interactive maps, over the US spec 😅 Also: the Sportback looks better I think, and has more range compared to the Estate. The charging curve difference is interesting, Bjorn Nyland didn't experience that in his test, another US-specific issue?
@philhartley7551 Жыл бұрын
Hi I had a sportback and quite like the change to estate, to be honest, I'm easy either way. I hadn't noticed the homelink thing but in US can you not then add the % charging page to your shortcuts? I did this on the old etron but no need on the Q8. As far as I am concerned having done 56,000 miles in the old one and only 2,000 in the new one (across Europe), no perceived change in ride quality/noise etc and charging is just as good. Slightly different charging, faster in the low/mid range but still good at 70%s, 80%s and 90%s.@@lmjabreu

Tire tread wear makes a difference in both efficiency and reported efficiency. As the tire wears, two things happen: The thinner tread squirms less under load, reducing heat losses, and the tire gets harder with age, reducing rolling resistance. A worn tire also weighs less (sometimes by several pounds per wheel, and that's unspung rotational weight), and the slightly reduced circumference means the car reports slightly higher speed and longer distance for the same actual distance and energy used, which slightly skews reported efficiency (different than actual efficiency). A small change in circumference from new to old tires (easily on the order of a centimeter per revolution) really can add up over hundreds of miles. As with a gas car, the only way to truly measure efficiency is to charge to 100%, measure distance via only GPS, then charge to 100% again and calculate by actual watts used for actual miles traveled. The car can only guess at actual miles traveled and therefore can only guess at efficiency. It wouldn't surprise me if all of these factors added up to the older car on old worn tires reporting slightly higher efficiency than the new car on new tires. Put both cars on new tires and I bet the old car slips behind the new one in efficiency.

What Alyssa says about old Etron sounding better than new one, in my understanding, comes from the difference in sound deafening and comfort in older one being better, it does insulate outside noise better thus allowing Kyle to claim a better sound experience in older Etron. I’ve been on two road trips in my 2019 e-tron since i got it a year ago, and got 260 and 280 miles respectively in efficiency mode, around 65mph, although true average speed was lower because of i95 congestion around DC metro area, which is probably why my range was better. In efficiency mode, I routinely get 2.9m/kWh, although I generally drive in Individual mode with. Sports steering, comfort everything else. I get around 220 to 230 miles in mixed driving. Definitely would not be worth upgrading to a Q8, but then again, the only reason I can afford this is because it was a 2019, and I got it in November 2022 (with 10k miles on it). Love the e-tron. By far the nicest EV I’ve owned of the 3 I’ve owned (Tesla Model Y LR, Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited and this). Even with the shorter range and the few issues ive had the with Etron, i still absolutely love it. Just bought a 2023 Model Y for a second car, but the Etron is still the preferred EV for the house. This test is great for comparing these cars. The new one really goes 65miles further, or 29% further. So the numbers presented don't really add up given that usable capacity is "only" 22.5% more and if it is also less efficient, how can it then go a whooping 29% further? 290miles/106kWh usable=2.74 miles/kWh in the new Q8. While 224.6/86.5=2.60 miles/kWh in the old e-tron 55... That has the new one more efficient. But I guess we have to factor in the degradation in the older car and heatloss that the efficiency numbers in the screen. So if we instead use the efficiency numbers from the cars (I think I saw 3.0 miles/kWh when Alyssa parked up) and factor in a 3% heat loss during highway driving we get 1.03*290/2.9=103kWh usable in the Q8 (sounds about right) Vs 1.03*224.6/3.0=77kWh usable, not 86.5 in the old e-tron... That's just about10% degradation on a 3 year old car which seems to be what one can expect on the modern batteries, and after that it seems to level out. Never the less, the test is very much valid and really shows the difference between buying a new Vs a 3 year old one. 29% longer range (if you actually need it). For an even more perfect comparison you could all have turned around together with Alyssa but then continued driving on the highway when she turned off empty, that way you would all have experienced the exact same outside conditions and you'd really be able to compare consumption side by side during the whole distance Alyssa could drive the old e-tron. But as you say, roadtripability has more to do with the charging curve, how many kWh you can push in to the battery in a short time, and efficiency. So looking forward to the 10% challenge. I believe they both should do about the same as the curves are so similar low down. The magic is the flat curve and the fact that you get about 5miles/8km of range for every minute you are plugged in below 75% (@80mph/130km/h), so it doesn't really matter when on the curve you take that comfort break and charge on your journey. New V/s old, the much better curve at high SOC on the old one really means that the new one really only becomes relevant if you regularly can make use of that initial first leg range, or if there's more than 160miles/260km between chargers enroute in the summer, or I'd say 100miles/160km real world windy winter, or if you tow or have things on the outside. They truly are great cars, both used and new, as long as there are vacant HPC chargers that work...

Makes the throttle sloppy, lowers the cars to lowest setting over 90kmh. Sets the AC to eco mode, whatever that means. Other than that nothing.
@villho Жыл бұрын
Uses only the rear motor until throttle is pressed quite deep. I've checked this via OBD and looking at front and rear motor data with different modes.

Efficiency in EVs comes from reducing the effective series resistance in every power component as much as possible.

Maybe it's my being almost 48 years old now but 200 miles is perfect range. I'm already looking for a nice break from driving around 150 miles. Stopping to top off is right about what I need

Are you guys using the word "efficiency" properly? If I have a 5000lb car and it burns 2kwhr / mi and a 2500lb car and it burns 1kwhr / mi, which is more efficient?

What happens to the efficiency if all the tires have the same pressure?
@adalba77025 ай бұрын
It probably becomes more efficient. Generally higher tire pressure reduces surface area, thus reducing rolling resistance and making the car more efficient

Kyle, I am following all your videos and comparing my Etron to yours. I have basically identical car (i have grey instead of black), with 28k on it, and I am getting little worried here. Mine's range is diminishing very aggressively. I only get (last charged to 80%) 155miles/80% and mostly only about 170-180 miles of range on fully charged to 100%. I drive it empty, with mostly only me driving (175lbs), without roof rack. Even it shows max 192 miles at full charge at 100%, it drops 30 miles or so almost instantly after only few couple of miles driving. I am very worried as my warranty is about to expire in December. What are your thoughts? (last yearly checkup in August, they claimed everything is perfectly fine). - (I have slight whining noise coming from rear right axle, like electrical grinding noise. Could be a drag issue? they checked it and told me seems fine even though they hear it) Give me your thoughts... what should I do?

E-trons have 8 years or 100K miles battery warranty. Ask your delership to scan your battery for any dead cells, that might well be the case.

I have a 2022 E-Tron (non-S-line and non-Q8). And long range driving is still not ideal. We only get about 215 miles range with about 2.4mi/kwh. Only thing I do not like about the E-Tron. And I don’t really care too much about charging speeds, in as much as I care about range and efficiency.

Because we are not ready 100% electronic sources out there. We picked the Audi Hybrid Q5. In 6+ years we will go for 100% electric.

He’s already tested both of those cars if you search through the channel. In fact his long range test was a huge motivator for me to purchase my iX over the Model X about six months ago!
@hurztwaldmeister7560 Жыл бұрын
@@darylpitts390 Thanks for the infos. But if you want to compare you have to drive them at the same day, because temperature, traffic, and wind direction can have a big infuenece on range. If the wind is bad and it is cold outside the range can quickly lower by 50%.
@ECEV Жыл бұрын
Your saying that “range doesn’t matter only charging” only holds water when there are actually chargers that work. I had a recent trip around St. Louis and it was unbelievable how bad charging was

Kyle - I love your channel and have been following a few years. Question for you…I was able to get a 2021 Audi Etron Premium Plus with 20k miles for a great deal. Its very clean and original owner was a leasee. Do you recommend/suggest I get the extended warranty through Audi? Do you recommend a 3rd party warranty? If so, who do you recommend? I plan to keep the car long term. I estimate my annual mileage to be around 5k. Please let me know your thoughts. Ty!!!!

How to get that software to unlock more battery capacity? I just bought this etron used , range is not its strong suit. 155 miles range daily @ 80%. Kinda tired of charging it everyday just so I can function without anxiety.

Why did your range @ 14:55 go from 246 miles to 255 miles after you reset long term memory? How did you end up getting advertised 290 EPA at the end of the test when at first it was 255 @ 100%??

2024 Audi Q8 etron here. I charged to 99% before my trip. I hit 306 miles going from Atlanta to Charlotte. I was in dynamic mode the entire time however, I drove a safe distance behind tractor trailers when possible, I manually regened wherever possible, and I coasted whenever possible.
