No, the attachment point isn't centred, either. What is centred is the pivot point, which is slightly offset because the attachment point is recessed and has to go around the dispenser body when the cable is running off to the right side.

Hey Kyle, you probably know, but I just saw it the other day, Tesla is putting in a Supercharger Station in Alamosa, CO. It's a charging desert for the most part down here, so this will help pull some EV's into the area, and also help travelers with a better route to Durango, and locations in SW CO. It's still being constructed, and is slated to open in Q2 '24. But I'm hoping it'll open ahead of time.

I’ve been noticing that in these European videos. Almost every location he has been to has had pavers (Porsche, the “perfect” facility, etc). I’ve loved seeing it and have wished we used pavers more here in the states. With the increase in poured concrete, maybe the cost differential is shifting?

i do not know the regulation in NL but in germany you get charged for the amount of rainwater your facility is pouring in the sewage system of the community. so by using pavers that will let the water sip through into the ground and keeping the excess water on heavy rain on the site (like here where it looks like the lowest points are around the trees with soil around) you will reduce the running costs of the site and fill up the groundwater. such a system is of course not allowed on a gas station with all the risk of spilling oil and gas. another bonus factor of e-mobility

Interesting look at a charger in my home country. And not far from where I used to live too. But Best is VERY FAR outside Amsterdam, almost on the other side of the country 🙂 I wonder if they were planning to put in one more station but someone didn't make the slab big enough, and that's why one charger is still sitting there. The left side of each dispenser is lined up with the center of the parking spot because that's the side that the cable is hanging from, so the cable hangs at the center of the parking spot and can reach equally far on both sides of the vehicle. So the offset makes total sense to me.

The Springfield mall V3 supercharger in Virginia is the only V3 charger I’ve ever been power limited at. Battery was conditioned and at a low soc and I was getting 190kW. There was also a 20 min wait for the charger. Never did I think 20 superchargers wouldn’t be enough but I saw it firsthand. Worst part was a Rivian was trying to charge and needed two spots next to each other and nobody understood that.

8:37 The dispensers look to be positioned so that the tethered end of the charging cable is in the center of the stall. That means that the cable will have equal reach on either side of the vehicle. If the dispenser was centered, the cable would reach farther one side than the other. This also has the side effect of preferring Tesla's charging port placement by making that the shortest distance from dispenser holster to charging port. Or maybe that's just where the old V3 dispensers were to reduce the amount of work in the site renovation? I don't think you mentioned if this was a new site or a refitted one.

4:59 I think the bigger issue isn't necessarily going to come from the peak power, but rather the average power draw over a typical session. Tesla is still one of the only automakers that uses the extremely high C rate charging at low SOC with a steep taper, which matches well with this power distribution strategy. E-GMP cars, however, have a 50% higher average power draw to 80% than the Model 3/Y despite rarely if ever seeing the 250+ draws. But because the charging profile is flatter for E-GMP and other non-Tesla EVs, they will still be trying to pull well over the 90 kW distribution per post (at full occupancy) 15, 20, or even 30 minutes into a typical charging session. That will, of course, lead to additional queueing at these sites on busy days.
@lovswr
@lovswr Жыл бұрын
Yes! I would wager that if 20 non Tesla's showed up at this site, there would be problems. The load sharing scheme is optimized for Tesla's. As you postulate, what if more than 4 BEV's (like that BMW) which have relatively flat charging curves all try to draw max power at once? I am in no way suggesting that any Tesla site would fall to the charging experience at some EA charging sites, but I think that owners of non Tesla's should not expect the same experience, in all cases, that Tesla owners now enjoy.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 Жыл бұрын
@@lovswr As Kyle noted, one of the things I'm also starting to pay more attention to is overall site throughput. With 100% of the chargers up (yes, a big ask for some providers), I think we need to be looking for a minimum of 1 MW of throughput for most basic sites, but the larger travel sites will need to have as much as 4 MW. Put another way, the V3 sites were designed with an average 90 kW charging rate broken across all stalls. For future EVs and charging sites, I think we need to look to double that. Essentially, charging providers need to employ a site power, distribution, and throughput strategy that's designed to support an average 180 kW charging rate broken across all stalls.
@anthonyc8499

If Tesla owners now are spending 30-40 mins to get to 80%, why would non-Teslas charging for 30+ minutes affect queues?
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 Жыл бұрын
@@anthonyc8499 Not all Tesla owners will. Many rely on Tesla Nav, and they'll only charge as long as they need to get to the next stop, which is often only 10 to 15 minutes to add 40% to 50% battery. The problem is, that not only will site traffic increase overall after opening to non-Teslas, the higher average power draw will reduce the charging speed for everyone across the site. So those Tesla owners I mentioned earlier that might normally only be at the site for 10 to 15 minutes, might now be at the site for 20 to 30 minutes. You are right that, once a site is full and queued, it won't make much of a difference. My point is that the site will fill up faster and start queueing much earlier (and for much longer) on busy days due to the higher average charging rates.

Cable sounds like a compromise. Longer length will be heavier. Shorter are lighter. Can’t have bothered longer and lighter.

it is the wrong side as Bjorn says .......because in a garage that is not super wide u park so that there is more space on the driver side and plugging in on the driver side is more conviniant and closer to u when u get out

I don't think the cable catching at the bottom is an issue. Who pulls the cable off and immediately pulls it away laterally, instead of take it to their car? lol cool to see so many v4 coming online though!

I wonder if they could keep some v3 cabinets in place but not directly linked to a dispenser to provide the extra power Kyle talked about; hook up new v4 cabinets to the dispensers, old cabinets provide extra dc bus capacity

The curbs are pre-fab sections. I'm not sure why they are still using the V3 cabinets - maybe just a short term thing until they roll out the V4 cabinets. It looks like all the posts are positioned the same to me.

There is a new V4 supercharger in Wilsonville, OR (1st in the US, I think). I have not checked it out yet since it’s about 35 miles from my house, but intend to when in the neighborhood. Not clear how our Models 3 and Y will respond to the V4.

4d is not more centered. The parking space is a bit wider as per design guideline for a parking space on the far side of a row, atleast in the Netherlands.

Do you think these can do 1000V and 1000A at the same time, I.e. 1MW? 😮 Also, it looks like the cable could drag on the ground when you walk right next to the cabinet.
