I've spoken to many certified Yamaha mechanics who all said running the motor with a hose connected to the flush port will not damage the motor. I flush with the flush port for about five minutes with the motor running, then shut it off and let it flow with the motor off for another five. Motor has over 1000 hours and it's been bullet-proof since new.

@ronbennett8026 That is great to know, but I don't know why the manual the manufacturer says not to.They must know something we don't know but thanks for sharing. 1000hr is awesome 👌

Running the motor with the hose flush does not provide water to the impeller. It is backflushing the water intake, so running your motor will suck air on the inlet side and push the backwash water back into the motor, leading to impeller damage and engine overheating.

Hi Capt... good info as always!.... Running and flushing the engine with the barrel of water is a great way (the best way?!) I'm sure. I can't do that since our boat is kept on a lift.... I flush our 300 Yamaha with the flush-hose for 15-20 minutes, immediately after I get the boat back on the lift; I flush it every time I run the boat, but I have never run the engine while flushing. I usually get water from the 'tell-tale'/ 'pee-hole' and the only time it is a weak flow is when the shore-side water pressure is low. (Our water company has 'pressure issues' sometimes). I don't know if the flushing gets to the thermostats and/or water pump, but I can say that every time I change the thermostats, they look like new; NO salty build-up and no corrosion. It's hard to tell the old thermostats from the new ones. Plus, most of our boating is in brackish and only minor-level salt water... The Atlantic Ocean near us is around 31-33 ppt salt. The Pamlico Sound where we do a lot of out boating is a third of that; around 19-24 ppt. The Pungo River is around 6-9 ppt and Pungo Creek is usually around 5-7 ppt, so that is also a big factor as to why I get little salt/corrosion build up... I have a some friends who never flush their engines, and a lot of the local crabbers who go out every day in season, never flush their engines... I will still always flush ours....

@andrewfyakim525 Hello, Andrew and you're right. Your water is not as salty as the ones we have here. The Caribbean waters are very salty. It's a matter of fact when I come from the Bahamas, there's a huge built of salt on the boat and doing the right thing. Captain, that is just plenty of flushing for your type of boating. Thanks for. Watching captain and have an awesome night

Great video. That’s how I run the engine with my boat on the trailer. For normal after use flushing (my boat is kept in a wet slip in fresh river water) I use the hose connected to the top flushing hose on the engine. I start with a Salts Gone or Salt Away with engine down and OFF and flush till product is gone from the little canister. Then I continue flushing/rinsing with plain water while raising the engine after a couple of minutes it’s done. I put the engine down on the kick stand and leave it up out of the water.

@@UrjunkMygold That is a great. Idea, captain.Thank you for sharing that with me.I will take that in consideration for my future flushings

My 250 says in the manual that you don't "need" to run your engine when you use that hose port to flush it. It doesn't say you cannot run your engine using that. I can 100% confirm, it does work if you're running the engine and using that as the water inlet.

for my understanding the port works great too but the thermostat doesn't open , i like to bring engine to temperature because it takes salt deposits much better cap.
