It’s good to have people out there willing to help, because being on a stranded boat sucks. I’ve towed in 3 people so far this summer and it amazes me how many people won’t stop when trying to be waved down. One thing I do is always carry cash on me because if I break down and someone has to tow me, the least I can do is give them a few bucks for their troubles.

I got towed once, from 30 miles offshore Freeport,!Texas by the coast guard. I had electrical problems. I was towed on a 200 foot rope at 4 knots. Took over 5 hours. When we got to the dock they asked if I needed help loading it. I turned the key and it started. I looked at them and said oops. They laughed and said it happens all the time.

Thats why you ACTUALLY test and don't listen to the internet. That view with less bow rise is worth it all by itself. People asking why wouldn't engine manufacturers incorporate these on new engines...its because these engines are put on a thousand different hulls and combinations. There is no way to predict every scenario. Most times these fins don't work great..but sometimes they do. Great job cap. Good to see someone take risks and do real tests.

Looked like the display showed 3.1 gph with the Foil but 3.6 without it, when running ~4700. Generalized Hydrofoil owner comments seem to agree that it handles better with the foil (especially with hulls that like a hard chine) but produce a little less top end speed and a little less speed for a given rpm. Appreciate the video, Cap'n.

Good job Captain . Helping another Boatsman in need is the only choice out on the water . You handled that situation very well . Also as someone else commented I wondered about the position of you’re motor up or down as far as correct measurements are concerned in relationship to the length of you’re out drive ? Some boats use what I think is called a skip jack which allows the motor to be adjusted up and down on the transom in order to get the optimum performance . It’s something to think about .

Hi captain, if you remember my comment about the hydrofoil is exactly what happened to my boat get on plain way faster and you can keep your boat a lower RPM on plain, so I don’t know why so many negative comments about the hydrofoil.
@OutOnTheReef4 жыл бұрын
I agree captain most of the people that say more negative things about it is that they don't like to open holes on their outdrive
@baitguru91974 жыл бұрын
Monitor those bolts, or carry replacements. Both hole-shot videos indicate "With Hydrofoil". Did you intend for one of those starts to read "WITHOUT" the hydrofoil? I have this same hydrofoil on two different motors (one 125 Merc, and I replaced that with 200 Merc) and the foil provides much better hole short and stability on my 22' Trophy Walk around (2002WA). It helps prevents porpoising. I also found that I can get a slightly faster 21" 3 blade prop (still keep the 4 blade when I have 5 or 6 people on board) for faster speeds (only 42/43mph) versus 37 to 39 with a 4 blade 19" prop. When running with my Merc, I want max rpm to be around 5800 rpm (not that I run that fast frequently, as it sucks down the fuel). One thing I found, and you should monitor, is that the bolts that came to install the Hydrofoil actually broke (two of them). I can not explain why, but I ran to the local hardware and purchased all new stainless steel replacements bolts, and lock nuts (taller than factory install with more threads and better grip), and haven't had any other issues (except I had to cut with a hacksaw to the exact length).
@OutOnTheReef4 жыл бұрын

Advantage of a hydrofoil is to be on the plan, at a lower speed. Which is great in rough conditions, chop, fetch. They are not for vessels operating at high speeds. They are also dangerous on turns with certain hull shapes. If you can’t trim your vessel, raise and lower the bow underway. Your motor is either under powered, has the wrong transom angle, or the vessel has a hook in the hull!? 😎🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺

I think you could benefit from raising your engine a hole or 2.
@OutOnTheReef4 жыл бұрын
You think that will make my RPMs higher and that will help a lot?
@leoaa7774 жыл бұрын
Out On The Reef yes, the cavitation plate and the trim piece now looks buried, should be above the water. It should help bump the rpms, you should be closer to 6000. Measure the cav plate with a straight edge , should be 2 inches above the bottom of the hull.

If they are so good then why don't outboard motor builders just build them into the lower unit from the factory? Also why don't you see them on race boats?
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
The reason manufacturer dont do this to all motors is because not all boat need this ,this is made for heavy transom boats and underpowered boats like mine that needs that extra transom lift and speed boats dont need this because they have enough power, hope this ensures you question cap.😉👍⚓

A lot of boats come from the factory withe factory with hydraulic trim plates but if you don't have them This is a really good alternative without having to spend 3 grand.
