As someone who started watching your channel right when you started your off-meta climb, I think series like that are the best way to keep the channel growing. The biggest reason is that when you play something off-meta - or even something you just don't play regularly - you wind up (maybe unintentionally) explaining a lot more about the overall game in your videos: * What is the meta, and why isn't [whatever you're playing] a part of that? * What is the buildpath and playstyle, and why does it work? * What is the champion's kit, and how do you use that to play into stronger/more meta champs? As a casual player, I find this really interesting - I actually hadn't played in years before watching your videos, and I found them to be a really organic way to catch up to the current state of the game. When you play more meta champions, you do less explaining because - from your POV - you're just playing the game 'normally' but people who don't play as much have less of a firm grasp on what 'normal' is so, so the video becomes harder to follow and less informative. At the same time, doing off-meta stuff also appeals to more experienced players because it's something fresh, so even if you are explaining things they already understand, what you are doing is still novel and therefore entertaining.
@ph1lny38 ай бұрын
Yes, this is extremely helpful, especially if you haven't played the game in a while. He also has the right amount of brevity so it doesn't drag it on for people more familiar with what's going on.

That reminds me Pekin, are the longer videos actually working well for your channel? Don't get me wrong, I love having more games to watch. And I'm not a content creator so I'm only basing myself on what I heard elsewhere, but my understanding was that %watchtime of a video is key, and as a result I'd think having two games in one video (and thus having a higher chance that one might not watch the second one or leave it for later) might hurt the perceived popularity of the video according to the algorithm. Very curious to know if I'm wrong about that.

Pekin what do you think about the whole kill your lane opponent early and being punished for it by losing a wave? I feel that: - the death timers are too short early on. - tp is op for allowing you to GAIN XP relative to your opponent after losing a 1vs1. It is against the core concept of the game. How can someone be punished for beating their lane opponent early and it being something in the game?
@Netsuko8 ай бұрын
Early death timers have been specifically lowered by Riot not too long ago actually.
@Tooamazin8 ай бұрын
@@Netsuko Plus the jungle catchup EXP, these 2 things are for low elo players IMO. It's things they change to make games not as snowbally and instalosses, specifically in lower elo where players make mistakes left and right.

Assuming you take ignite, 300g advantage worth so much more than a full wave of exp, especially if you can kill again after your ignite is back and TP of him is not
@obiwanyutuben8 ай бұрын
I like the fact that the advantage that you get (gold) is a benefit that you have to choose when to leverage. Soon as you get back to lane you have to protect this gold until a moment the levels are equal. And then again when it becomes uneven. This gives windows of opportunity to the opposing player and team. This is actually brilliant game design. Intended or not. @@麥馬校草
@blr728 ай бұрын
I think that getting punished by losing the entire early laning phase for a mistake early on is much worse than the alternative of not getting as far ahead as you could have if death timers were longer. The first makes the game not fun for one player and fun for the other. The second allows both players to have fun. If it truly is that broken to take tp and use it in that manner then feel free to. I personally think that taking tp vs ignite is so well balanced that you change it depending on the matchup rather than always taking one because it is significantly better. If I remember correctly top laners were forced to take tp due to tp allowing them to have an actual impact on the rest of the game and the other top lamer needing to respond to that by following them. That said I’m not Pekin so don’t think this is the opinion of someone high rank or anything.

Maybe do the marbles thing, but call it something like "Random Picks to Challenger" instead? It could be that the average person (especially here on youtube) doesn't know what marbles is, so a title that can better hook people in (similar to "Off-Meta to Challenger") might get more clicks. I do think these recent videos having the focus (even superficially) be on a specific champion (here Ryze) might be putting off people who think "Meh, I don't want to watch Ryze", whereas making the focus your climb points to your personal skill instead - but you're the one who can see the analytics of course! That's messed up. Love your vids and I think one of the things you do the best is analyze items, builds orders that are under used or show off how to utilize the new items. That's the only thing I can think of missing from your content is sometimes you will build an item like the new ludens and you are already aware how it works, and how it's different but us noobs could gain a lot from going into it. That one especially I wasn't playing right when it released, and from reading the wiki it took me forever to get what it was saying. So many un optimal builds on the stats sites and pro games you could probably click bait popping off with a better one but tap into keywords of like pro players names or boosting your winrate/elo or whatev league related words people search. Oh and you do how to play as new champs, but I don't know if you've done a lot of videos of how to counter the new champs, or flavor of the month S tier solo queue champs. Oh and I miss the collabs with other content creators. I only have so much interest in serious vids, especially from the typical mid lane champs since I don't play that role, but I could watch you goof around with Nidhog and Quantum or whoever else your chummy with forever. I remember a game not too long ago where you comment on the jarvan in your game and I didn't realize til then it was Nidhog when he typed right after. Aphromoo also used to do clash series where he played with his non pro friends and it was pretty entertaining trying to watch him carry a bunch of golds in that format and even that can be pretty instructional of how people can climb out of low ranks. I don't remember any names, but it seems like you've had some interesting characters you had in your PBE games you set up to get contested champions from time to time who would like kamikazi to through the game and let you finish your build, might keep people engaged to have a some sort of consistent story line in that way or having you train them between clashes like mulan.

I will say that as a daily viewer, there were definitely quite a few days last month where I wasn’t recommended your videos. While I have absolutely no idea how the logistics of youtube work, I would assume that my experience wasn’t isolated to me, and that probably had an impact on subs. Also on the new series, I think the general viewerbase doesn’t necessarily enjoy off meta, rather just a specific set of flashier champs. I watch the twitch vids but they’re not my favourite, and I would take a guess and say the camille video yesterday did well compared to others around it? Camille is off meta but also an enjoyable champ to watch, things like nunu and twitch kinda feel gimmicky? I just feel like I’m not really learning about anything relevant
