Would a Threadripper Pro CPU benefit your workloads - or will you stick with a regular desktop processor?

I have a friend who's using the Threadripper with 256GB of RAM for running a meteorological software system on. It might also be good for running numerical weather prediction models on (though they tend to be single threaded parallel compiled code to run on Supercomputers but can run on desktops, too.)

In Blender Rendering.. HECK NO! You are better served with an Nvidia RTX GPU using Optix. A $400 RTX 3060TI can easily beat my $1400 AMD 24-core Threadripper CPU in Blender.

What I like is that you can put a 4090 triple slot in there, and even if it blocks several slots you still have 3 full 16x gen4 slots available

Recently I was starting to think that my 3975wx was a bit of a waste of money and wish I was a year or so later to get the Ryzen 7950x for much cheaper. However, the latter only has 24 pcie lanes! (Which I really didn't appreciate. Albeit at Gen 5) I've realised how important it is when you have a lot of NVMe drives, a couple of graphics cards, along with 8 memory channels. And your video has also made me feel like I made the right choice.

Despite recent consumer based drops in sales by both Intel and AMD…… AMD has smashed their business / enterprise sales of their Threadripper/ Epyc CPUs and continue to increase AMDs market share in the part of the market that Intel solely reigned supreme for many decades! Better prices, performance, energy use and thermals has given AMD the advantage.

Thanks, Chuck

I live in Canada. The price of the Threadripper Pro processors and components here is really excessive, and components are getting scarce with many now shipping only direct from China. The 64-Core 5995WX is almost $12,000.00 CAD with tax. I priced out a TRP system because I require a computer that can take up to 2TB to 4TB of memory. I need memory size versus performance. The TRP was out of my budget by a lot. So I bought an Intel Xeon W7-2495X 24-Core system. My entire system is way less than the TRP 5995WX 64-Core processor just by itself. And the TRP 5965WX 24-Core system is still 30% more than the entire Xeon W7-2495X system. The TRP is also PCIe4 and DDR4, whereas the W2400 is PCIe5 and DDR5. Unfortunately I need the system now and can't wait for the new TR/TRP 7000 ETA Q4-2023+ or the new Intel Xeon ETA Q4-2023/Q1-2024. You gotta buy in at some time. My AMD R9-5950X has been mostly retired due to 128GB not being enough memory.

The temps are because of the low comparative clock frequencies they run at and volts being fed into them, not because "that's just threadripper". If they were running at 5+ghz they'd be in the 90's like their mainstream counterparts.

Great work. My brother works in the oil industry doing modelling and he loves the ability to model multiple scenarios simultaneously. The comparison with the 7950 really showcased AMD's advances and bodes well for the Threadripper 7000 series. I hope, though, that you will follow this up with a video on the 12 and 16 core models, which may be of more interest to your regular viewers, some of whom I'm sure chafe at the 128 GB RAM limit - really 64 GB on Ryzen 7000 right now - but don't really need 24+ cores or 128 PCIe lanes.

*There is a catch.* For rendering people today mostly using GPU rendering. For CPU workload in content creation context, single core is way more important, while not everything multi-threaded even in 2023, so it will crunch part of the job and stuck on slow single core bottleneck of 64 cores. It's like you bought a Ferrari, and someone on 1970s almost dead car in front of you on a single lane road. (and something like image saving time will be like a speed limit). So, even if you have tons of cash to burn, for content creators is way better to buy fast single core performance CPU, like 7950x, and high end GPU, at lower total system cost of single 5000x Threadrippers. Was shocked about new pricing that 2-3x compared to 1950x. Only make sense if you really need CPU only performance. For tons of PCE lanes you can buy previous gen at 0.5x Would be interesting to include 1,2 3, and last gen of threadrippers together.

@rendermanpro

@@magog6852 I would go with 7950x, for 1-2 GPU it will be fine I think. Kind of unclear pci lanes with modern AMD. It will be hard anyway to put more GPUs without riser cables and open rig. I'm on 1950x still, while didn't find 4 full PCI motherboard for 7950x anyway, and most motherboards today is crazy in pricing

Thanks so much for this! Looking at this then, for someone who does 4K video editing and 2D + 3D animation, is the 5965WX worth the value then along side a Dual 4090 TUF OC? I work on many high value videos for a large tech company and I'm the lone animator for the team, and yes it's an out of pocket expense since I'll be using it for personal 3D projects. My 5950X has been a stability plagued system since I got it Day 1. I already placed an order from PUGET systems for a 5965 WX, 128GB RAM. Is worth the money for my WFH system or should I go down to a 7950X? Would really love to hear some thoughts while I can still make changes to the main platform. Thanks!

@@StefanUrkel I ended up cancelling the system I ordered. There were too many Red Flags for the PRO series. A lot of people don't like them, and with the only positive being the 128 pci-e lanes. That 12K just wasn't worth the money. Plus my 5950X beats it or is on par with it, while the 7950X actually beats it. Could really use the extra lanes though. But yeah, they were great to work with. I would definitely go for them on my next build.
