Great question indeed! Had the same exact thing happen years ago on an older 80 Ton Grove AT with the O/R snapping at 70% just levelling the crane. Learned the hard way! Can only question one comment on your episode. Sometimes even the boss/crane owner has not read the manuals and may or may never have been a journeyman operator. If you know 100% something the boss asks of you is unsafe or forbidden in the manual, refuse it and explain why. Can be a very uncomfortable situation but necessary. Maybe an episode about refusing unsafe work?

really good content. If the load chart didn`t say you can use this chart at a different configuration, then you can`t, even if it looks "safer" to you. Also, you can`t use the outrigger if there is no pin because the horizontal cylinder that suck/push the outriggers in and out, can not take more load than what is needed to move the outrigger horizontally. In the case of tipping over or near tip over situation, or when there is some movement in the ground, or even a hydraulic press lose, it is the pin that holds the outriggers in place.

Great video and explanation.. Quick question.. when bringing down and bringing up outriggers is it better to bring down both on one side and then the other side or to push down the front outriggers then back outriggers? I work for a crappy company that has old trucks so no instruction manuals available =(..

Del; two technical questions in the interest of teaching: 1). Can you do a vid on the new Grove maxbase system? Where are the load charts for one short leg? I don't think there are any... Lots of bosses think if you're lifting over the legs that are fully extended you're still all good so long as you don't lift over a short leg. Can you disprove this theory? 2). Charts on the groves for how many falls of rope you can have in relation to the length of your boom. The new 3060L groves have it but you won't find this chart on the new 5150 groves. Check it my bro, or brothers of the hook might be able to help perhaps.....

i think if there is any doubt always hit the pin holes fore sure, unless its specifically a "variobase" type crane layout always stick with 0-50-100% outrigger span. grove roughies are a bit different from other roughies in that they only have pin holes for 0% and 50% outrigger span 100% outrigger doesnt have a pin hole ( operated RT 750E and RT 890E) but as you said book will tell you if you can or not. one thing i also want to add since we are on grove roughies, you dont get this with tadanos is if you guys set up on a hill with a grove roughie MAKE SURE IT IS IN 4WD the way the park brake works there is potential for the entire crane to roll away (and i have seen it on a job) because all it does is lock the ass end where as tadano does some funky shit where the tyres spin opposite of each other on the diff, grove roughies are pretty good for what they are if you can get used to free slew they are a good intro to free slew cranes but wind and not being 100% level can gives you a hard time. if anyone has any questions about grove roughies i can give some decent advice or feedback spent a few months in them. they deff separate the shit lords from the guys that half know how to operate ;) keep up the good work del absolute legend.

Also, never ever under any circumstances punch into your computer settings or configurations that the crane is not set up for. If a situation happens and god forbid someone gets injured you are seriously liable because you have over ridden your most basic crane settings. If an accident happens they will go through your crane and find the fault and you are toast. Possibly criminally liable. I worked with a crane driver years ago that would punch in extra counter weight so he could do the lift. AHHHHHHH If you did that on a mine site in Australia and got caught you would be banned for life.
