Outrun 2 Vs Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (Original Xbox)

I was asked by another KZbinr recently if I could upload a comparison between the Original Xbox version of Outrun 2 and Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast. These are both being played on Xbox 360 which upscales them into HD. I've always thought that Outrun 2K6 looked a tiny bit grainier than Outrun 2 when playing the original Xbox on my old CRT TV in the past, but here upscaled it doesn't seem quite so obvious (I'm sure I read somewhere once that the anti-aliasing in Outrun 2K6 wasn't as good due to the extra memory requirements of the additional courses compared to Outrun 2). One little odd side-effect of using the Xbox 360 though, is that in OR2 sometimes when you move from stage to stage the stage can just suddenly appear and 'grow' around the checkpoint as you go through it - something that didn't happen in the original Xbox. Sometime the frame-rate can seem to go a bit weird as well, although that doesn't seem quite so apparent in the finished video as it was when actually playing. As far as I can tell, OR 2K6 doesn't seem to suffer any ill effect of being played on 360. Obviously , because I'm using my unmoded 360 for this rather than one of my soft-modded original Xboxs, I'm unable to do capture from the Japanese version of Outrun 2 I've used in other videos.
After the main comparison, I do a side-by-side comparison of the palm beach stage from OR2 running next to the Palm Beach Stage at dusk option you can do in OR2K6's time attack mode. I then segue from that into another race from Outrun 2. Why? Because I think the 360 Spider car model looks cool and my initial game footage I captured was with that - but it was a fairly mediocre run. The 288 GTO is my go to car generally because it's fast, got great acceleration and handles well and this is what I did the 'main' gameplay run with. And although I like the design of the GTO, I just think the 360 Spider looks a lot nicer. But I generally always seem to get slower times with it (not that I'm trying to set any records or anything, but it's always nice to upload some at least semi-competent gameplay).

Outrun 2 has better water effects, it's visible during lap 2 when we take on the left at the 1st crossroad, but both games are so good to play. I also hope for a backward compatibility, or even better, a 4k remastered !

Never played the original OR2 until a few days ago, and some differences I noted: - OR2006 adds a lot of new tracks (15, I believe), but removes the Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 bonus tracks that were on the original OR2/ - Hitting the back of a traffic car while drifting slows you down a lot on OR2; on 2006, it was changed so the cars just trade some paint. This makes the gameplay a lot easier imo; - Slipstream and cars passed notifications were added on OR2006, maybe to get more attention from the player - They added those animations between stages, like the birds and the dragon. They're cool and distract the player from the scenery 'inflating' in the background. This and all the other more obvious interface changes, like the fact you have to earn OutRun Miles on OR2006 to buy stuff instead of just playing the Missions like in the original. This makes the game more grindy since the economy isn't very well implemented.

No it doesn't, Xbox 360 backwards compatibility is done through software emulation which causes glitches and slowdowns that weren't present on the original Xbox hardware. The emulator also processes the games at 640x480 (the same resolution as the original Xbox) so there are no advantages whatsoever to playing Xbox games on Xbox 360.

Unfortunatly here in Europe our original Xbox's are limited to 576i, which makes the graphics look muddy on a HDTV. the only way to get 480p, 720p etc is if we softmod it. But if you have a softmodded xbox or an NTSC xbox then there is no reason to play it on 360.

Agreed the frame drops are due to the bad compatability of the emulation on the original system it does not drop at all, its well known many games have slight to major glitches running on the 360.

I have a modded OG Xbox and an Xbox 360. I don't have the original of OR2006 but I do have OutRun 2, and trust me that it does upscale to 720p on the 360. It looks significantly better than how it does on the OG Xbox at 480p, where viewing even on my relatively small 32" TV it looks very blocky compared to the 360 upscale. On the flip side, the OG Xbox makes the colours look more vibrant, whereas it's rather more subdued on the 360. Horses for courses. Plus it doesn't slowdown on the OG Xbox except briefly on the Goal A final stage.

It's not so obvious in split-screen mode like this, but Outrun 2 is a bit graphically sharper than Coast 2 Coast and seems to have slightly better anti-aliasing. If you look at the road, you'll notice there's a bit of a better draw distance on the road markings in OR2, they sort of blur into the horizon more on Coast 2 Coast.

yeah , been lookin for this after i was told that xbox Outrun 2 had more and nicer bloom, and that Coast 2 Coast had downgraded graphics. From this vid i can see no downgrade and no less bloom on coast 2 coast whatsoever. maybe playing this on a xbox360 even things out, perhaps?

There is a very slight downgrading of the graphics in Coast 2 Coast compared to Outrun 2. I think I read somewhere it's to do with the anti-aliasing (as Coast 2 Coast needed more memory for the extra tracks).

Might be able to overide this by manually changing your GPU's anti-aliasing for this game. I did this recently for an old PC game called Tron 2.0 and the result was phenominal, really surprised me how well it worked, makes the game look a lot more modern. Been meaning to try it out on Coast 2 Coast.

@@Sega_Dreams awesome awesome. I guess I just assumed the 3D Controller didn't do anything for it. No one seems to be using analog on Saturn playthroughs on KZbin. Can tell when they are only tapping full turns instead of weaving smoothly around traffic. That's good to know because that probably means afterburner and space harrier use that controller too.

But is it possible playing OutRun 2 on the 360 detracts from it? What if you played it on the original up against Coast 2 Coast on the 360? OR2 released over a year before the 360, whereas C2C released over a year after. It makes sense the latter would have optimizations on technology already existing. But, many original Xbox games run worse (both performance issues and graphically) on the 360. Panzer Dragoon Orta comes to mind. And you've already pointed out performance issues not seen on the original Xbox when playing OR2. Where there's smoke, there's fire.

I don't think it detracts, it looks so much clearer and crisper played in HD any little graphical hiccups don't really bother me. The issue with the frame-rate isn't super noticeable really and it doesn't happen all the time. I've got Panzer Dragoon Orta and I thought I looked amazing on the 360 upscaled. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKOmlGd8pZtrjtE There is an issue with the PAL version where the game crashes after a certain stage, but it's possible to get around this by using the Pandora's Box game options to use the stage select.

Not really. Coast 2 Coast is like an expansion of the original Outrun 2, but there's content in Outrun 2 that doesn't feature in C2C and is only playable in that game.

Lex 240 Short version. Outrun 2 has slightly better graphics, has 2 bonus stages made up of all the Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 tracks and contains the original 1986 Outrun as an unlockable. C2C contains an extra 15 stages as well as the original OR2 15, but doesn't contain the bonus stages. It's also got more cars, music and content.

It's a Japan exclusive version of Passing Breeze that came on a bonus disc with the Japanese PS2 version of Outrun 2 SP. I originally discovered it as a download from the BYOAC forum that you can use to actually swap out the existing tracks with these ones (Edit: in the PC version of the game I mean). outrun 2 has 2 bonus stages which are the four stages from scud race (Beginner Day, Beginner Night, Medium and Long) and the challenge course from Daytona USA 2 power edition (Starting with Advanced then through to Expert then finally onto Beginner) I’d love to get outrun 2006 coast to coast on Xbox but it’s ridiculously expensive for Xbox I had 2 copies of ps2 version but didn’t work neither of em maybe I’ll try a 3rd copy of ps2 one day

MrThunderwing I need your help! I've been obsessed with determining how I should play OR2 and C2C for the last couple nights! On a HDTV I have two options: 1) play 'em on 360, or 2) play 'em on original Xbox hooked up via component? On the original hardware it runs perfectly but is in 480p and not quite as clear as the 360 upscaling to 720p. But on 360 OR2 drops some frames, and C2C has that issue where the track detail disappears about 2 car lengths ahead of your car, has audio that sometimes hangs (car engine sound that does NOT stop even when finishing a race or going back to a menu!), and that super long initial load time. I'm so torn. I also have a great quality 2005 27" CRT but I don't want to go that route anymore. What do you recommend? Thanks!

Played some more tonight and it's suuuuuch a close call! The difference between 420p and upcaled 720p seems awfully close on my setup. I'm thinking OR2 on 360 but C2C on original Xbox. OR2's only real issue on 360 is slowdown on palm beach and ghost forest... otherwise it's mighty fine.

@@SEGAHEADDY I think at the end of the day, the only person who can make that call is you. I tried OG Xbox Outrun 2 with component cables for the first time not all that long ago and it was pretty amazing how much better it looked than the Scart/composite I'd been using up until then. But it's still not quite as crisp as the upscaled 720p you get from the 360. As you say though, playing on the 360 comes with it's own set of issues... I'd say OG Xbox is _probably_ the best option. OG Xbox is also a lot easier to mod than a 360, so you could do that and get hold of a copy of the superior JPN version of Outrun 2 with it's improved bonus stages.

I've noticed C2C on OG Xbox is insanely grainy compared to on 360 - for example, I was absolutely blown away how grainy the visuals were on the Big Forest track. On 360, that track is ridiculously smooth by comparison. Actually, so smooth that it looks like it's missing detail in the textures on the large trees! If you ever do another comparison vid on Outrun 2, that stage on OG Xbox vs. 360 would be an excellent one.

There is no disc based Xbox 360 version of Outrun 2, it was only for the OG Xbox (as was Coast 2 Coast). I don't own an XBone, so I couldn't say for definite I'm afraid, but I believe it's not backwards compatible unfortunately.

I've only ever played the PS2 version via emulation and that had all sorts of graphical problems, so I'm probably not in the best position to judge, but I believe the Xbox version is supposed to be significantly better looking than the PS2 version.

I've played PC,PS2 and Arcade version which is basically a beefed up Xbox. Looked great on ORC2C PS2 I just wished the textures wasn't so muddy. Arcade looked phenomenal razor sharp,textures are quite more detailed than PS2 version. PC...well I was played it on a 2005 laptop that wasn't quite a gaming laptop so it looks fine I think with some annoying framerate drops..

I have both of these on my XBox and I have to say C2C is better, more cars including tuned up cars, more tracks, more music and game options, even the handling of the cars are better. Every now and then I do play the original Outrun 2 as the arcade machine was in the student union when I was at university 15 years ago, loved playing it so it gave great memory's. But all in all C2C is better.

Dunno mate, It wasn't when I bought both my copies of it (2 copies for system link purposes). I think it's just a bit rare these days - an uncommon game as Pat the NES Punk would say.

It was released after the 360 came out and so not many copies were made (in comparison to other games which are a dime a dozen). This game would set you back around £50 whereas the more common Outrun 2 would cost about £5. Thankfully I found my mint copy in a charity shop for 99p!!

I don't like what they did to the physics on C2C it's too arcade even for Outrun. The game are much harder on C2C and controls are not tuned well I never get the right steering sensitivity its either too slow to or it's so twitchy that it will send the car across the screen easily. On Outrun 2 controls are much tighter and natural. And there are less collision interaction with other cars on the road of you collide with other cars while drifting sideways you would just slide off them easily or worst you slide off them only to slingshot the car to a wall and crash while on Outrun 2 you will get punish and the car will slow down a lot and react to the collision and you're less likely to slide off cars and slingshot to the wall and crash. It may have much more content and remixed music but the game play suffered quite a bit for that. PS2 didn't get Outrun 2 so that's why I have Coast 2 Coast for it but not for Xbox since I think it's a bit redundant for Xbox.

Nope, graphics in Coast 2 Coast aren't quite as good as Outrun 2.

@@alejandrocardo1386 The antialiasing in Outrun 2 is a tiny bit better. Also the draw distance on the road (the road markings disappear more quickly as you get to the horizon in C2C than they do in OR2). The diffrence between the 2 is pretty minimal TBH though.

Outrun 2 is better! And as for Ps2,Outrun 2k6 is fantastic with componet cables in modern tvs,only difference with Xbox is some slowdowns here and there as its an inferior console.

one thing i do not get, i got online arcade on ps3 and 360 , and outrun 2006 coast to coast and outrun 2 on OG Xbox that works on 360 too.. it's been a while i didn't hooked up my 360 , but does the 3 games have the same stages ?? all 3 games ?? so can anyone tell me what are the real differences ? thx ( wish it would be Backward compatible on xbox one X )

Outrun 2, japanese version on xbox looks waaay better than Outrun2SP on PS2.It's hard to say what the differences are. both run at 480p, but the ps2 version seems more washed out. The texture maps are lower res and it shows.I used to play the ps2 versionNow when playing the xbox, so much better.Never going back.

The resolution seems a tad sharper on C2C, but the original version is the better package because of the extra tracks and the 86 coin op included. Both are worth buying though.

swordghoti Actually, Outrun 2 is the slightly better looking of the two. I believe C2C hasn't got the anti-aliasing effects of OR2 because they needed to make some compromises because C2C has got so many extra stages.
