The insulation is to keep the outside air cold not warm it up.

It does keep the outside air cold but that's not what the insulation is for, it's to keep your room warm and not be drafty by all that cold air coming through the pipe chilling off your living space. Especially when stove it's even lit, who needs that cold pipe there? But she's wrong to think it somehow warms up the air, that's illogical. Having the pipe non-insulated would warm up the intake air, but there is no reason to warm up the intake air, cold air lights a fire just as well as warm air.

The reason for outside air kits on modern stoves is they are tightly sealed with gaskets and don't let air in except from the chimney, and you don't want chimney air in because it's full of smoke!! Old fashioned antique pot belly stoves have loose fitting doors and no gaskets and tons of air gets in through the doors and air intakes.
