Outside | Colin Benders | Floaty Things | Modular Lockdown

This track was recorded during the Modular Lockdown series earlier this year. It is also the first track on my “Floaty Things” release coming out later this month.
During the Modular Lockdown series I spent my days jamming on my #eurorack #modular #synth and recording everything I did. While most of the time I mainly did modular jam sessions, every now and then I spent a bit more time on a piece when I felt inspired.
This track took me 2 days of preparation and takes to get right. It was a bit of a stretch to get it all recorded in one take, a modular synth can be tricky for pieces like this. But in the end I was very happy with the result.

Hey mate! I love your work! I remember getting interested in modular synthesis a few years back and finding you on youtube. I would occasionally stroll back into the world of Modular Synthesis and revisit your work, among others.. -- Shout outs to Mylar Melodies, ebcidic (previously going by 'VCOADSR'), Steevio, HAINBACH ...and many others, you know who you are! Big ups to all the modular synth youtube madlads!!! -- Then when you started the Modular Lockdown series, when this crazy stuff happening in the world hit us all, I got to rediscover your work again, but this time, because of the nature of the live-streams with these long sessions, I started to get to know you and also got to witness an awesome little modular synth community, and between you doing some q&a with all these synth-heads talking about technical stuff I don't quite yet get and then going into your epic jams for hours on end, I could really feel the love! and I'd just like to give you huge props for doing your thing, man! So cool to see a longer composition done on modular! Are the ER-101s sequencing the main legato melody?

The ER101’s are sequencing all the melodies in this patch. Part switches are done with the ER102. I believe I am using both outputs per track for the polyphony, usually theres a lot you can double in therms of rhythm so with the 4 tracks you can do 8 voice polyphony.

...Sure why not! :D 1) Macbeth - no contest. 2) Minimod - superfat and perfect utility for just about everything I do 3) Doepfer precision VCOs - dirt cheap and still sound good! plus I am a doepfer fanboy. Theres a lot of other things to say about oscs but this is the stuff I really use.

Great work, did you recorded this in one take on the fly as a single stereo track or multitrack each voice and mixed/mastered afterwards in post production? BTW some parts of the arpeggios reminds me a bit of “Muse - Follow Me” :)

Everything was recorded in one take. It’s quite doable to prepare multiple parts on a modular system, provided you have enough voices. It then takes a couple of takes to properly perform the piece, with filter movements and part changes and whatnot. But I usually prefer the result this way. This video is a one- take without post mixing/mastering, however for the vinyl release I did send in the multitracks for proper mix/master (I do record my one-takes in multitrack for this purpose). The release version is coming shortly.
