Your assessment of using the Toyota part is 100% spot on. Customizing those plastic parts usually isn’t a good thing for long term. Thanks for the video. And with the actual Toyota part, you are better off inserting the clip into the lever first then putting the rod in and locking it in.

I haven't tried that, but I suspect that it would work if you can get the panel off. Having the door stuck in the closed position obviously complicates removing the panel
