This is a very informative tutorial! Thanks for sharing!!! Random fact: When combining Cm pentatonic & Ebm pentatonic, you get a scale that the Neck Diagrams software calls the Phrygiolocrian scale & it's the third mode from the Bebop Dominant scale. The intervals are root, b2, b3, 4, b5, 5, b6, b7 .

You're great at what I call "guitar thinking". That's not a comment on your actual playing. But to get those outside/inside sounds you have to delve a little! You're a great player. I'm just giving you a thumbs up on your approach. I think in a similar way about getting creative with using different scales in a close fretboard position. Good stuff bro!

guitarlessons Glad you got something from this lesson. Yeah ... there are so many cool things that can be done with simple pentatonics. We're actually going to be releasing several Lesson Pacakges exploring a ton of really cool and often overlooked and unused pentatonic options. Hope you check it out!
@elkeism5 жыл бұрын
that was good! the reason this works is because A7b9 = Bb dim which can move up in minor 3rds so you can incorperate 2 other minor pentatonics

Great lesson... Definitely more Jimmy Herring stuff please and maybe some more Matt Schofield too. ;). Thanks
@TheGuitarBreakdown10 жыл бұрын
Stew Pidass Definitely on both! We actually spoke with Matt Schofield a few times ... and he said he was into possibly doing some videos with us ... just had to make sure it doesn't conflict with some of the other stuff he has done. And Jimmy Herring ... we are hoping to approach him at some point (we both have some mutual friends ... so it's a possibility). Fingers crossed!

It's so great to find someone teaching Jimmy Herring licks, I'm a huge fan of his! Great lesson and great playing! Any chance I could convince you to do a lesson on the main melody riff of "One Strut" on the Lifeboat album? There's a part where the notes just go by too fast for me to catch them all! Thanks.

Fantastic ! What is the tune you are playing (audio only) AFTER your , : outside fusion pentatonic lick - guitar lesson - guitar breakdown - blues scale ? I guess it is one of your originals . That is one of the killerest solos i have heard in a long time ! I love that fast string changing feel & sound !

I don't understand real music theory but when you move up a 'minor 3rd' its just moving up to C, what would be moving up a 'major 3rd'? Or are you just calling it a minor 3rd because you are playing a minor scale? Definitely more Herring videos asap, if you know how to do that faux slide thing with the bar that would be an amazing vid. dope stuff man, thank you.
@mbacarellaguitar10 жыл бұрын
Going up a major 3rd would be going up to C# rather than C. 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths all have major and minor qualities when it comes to intervals. The major intervals are simply a half step larger than the minor intervals. For example, C to Db is a minor second. C to D is a major second. C to Eb is a minor third. C to E is a major third. This link has a ton information on the subject if you are interested in learning more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interval_%28music%29

so up a minor 3rd over a dominant 7/9/13 chord right? so, A7 I can mix A blues scale and the C minor pentatonic is that right?
@mbacarellaguitar8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Hunt Yes! That's exactly it.

+Mike Bacarella thanks for replying. I'm going to try that with my band for the funky "big legged woman" (we play in C) 👍🏻

Great stuff. A lot of the time when I play the Altered scale it sounds forced. The idea of taking the minor pentatonic up a minor third is a really interesting concept
@TheGuitarBreakdown10 жыл бұрын
stupidusername38 Yeah ... that's often a problem when thinking about "inserting" scales into improv. It often sounds forced ... but it just takes a lot of time just doing it and eventually it will become just part of your playing.But there are so many "concepts" with simple pentatonics that can get a lot of great sounds ... and we're actually working on a cool Lesson Package that should be out soon ... talking about a bunch of great was to use Pentatonics ... similar to what Michael is showing in this Lesson.
