Episode 7. Just a one-parter for this tank. It's not one which we could do an Inside the Hatch on, but we didn't want to just walk past it anyway.

ParkerDaiGames You won't ever see that Karl ingame. You need a crane to load it, and supply tanks to carry the shells to it. And while a 600mm HE shell would devastate anything inside a grid section, it's reload would be longer then a match duration so you could never fire it :P

Glad to see this, as every tour of the Kubinka Tank Museum I've seen, anywhere, never let anyone see...well, inside anything. Just seeing the scale of the Maus is just, awe-inspiring...and reinforces my belief that to even attempt building it was a massive waste of materials that Germany could ill-afford at that time. Once again, thank you Chieftain!

Gotta remember the requirements. It was never meant to be a general purpose vehicle, it was meant to be as hard to kill as physically possible with the tech of the day. Basically a bunker that can be relocated to shatter aproaching allied assaults that panthers would counterattack. Of the E series, the Maus' replacement E-100 was the only one to reach prototype. The british tested it post war, then scrapped it for financial reasons :\

Contraband Agree. Interesting but stupid idea. The biggest question I have is, “What’s it supposed to do?” If the only answer it, “Destroy enemy tanks”, then it’s pretty pointless. There were plenty of more practical ways of doing that.

Where are they going to find parts? They won't even know what the right part IS in most cases, so at best you'd be fabricating hundreds of anciliary components (massively expensive, trust me), and most of them would be guesswork. That is how you ruin a unique historical object. What is here now is the actual machine the Germans built in WWII. You start adding a bunch of modern repro work, which may or may not be close to correct, you just detract from the value of the real machine. A unique, one of a kind historical car is valuable no matter how poor and ratty it is, UNTIL some idiot decides to 'restore' it, and makes it basically a replica using some parts from a valuable relic. It would be far easier to just build a running replica based on dimensions of the existing chassis.

just so that you know, the tank + turret had between 200-330mm(8-13 inches) (rough estimate from what i read) of armor, steel is heavy, the whole tank was a 200 metric ton project. the turret is the size of a wide van, with like 25cm (10 inches) of steel all arround (even rougher estimate from what i read)

+Valentine I am not gonna argue about this. you can do your research. obviously playing War Thunder won't give you all the military knowledge about war, tanks and tactics. Ratte secondary armament is: 1 × 128 mm KwK 44 L/55 -- 8 x 20 mm Flak38 --- 2 × 15 mm MG 151/15 and in addition, there are planes, artillery support, SPAA and infantry units in field. Allies certainly could try to bomb Ratte (which was not suppose to be only one tank!) but their chance were really close to zero to destroy it in one or 2 runs. not too many pilots are brave enough, skillful or dare to get close to 8x 20mm Flak38 ..!

A "Karl-Gerät" (040/041) (German literally "Karl-device"), also known as Thor and Mörser Karl. It was a WW II German self-propelled siege mortar (Mörser) designed and built by Rheinmetall. The one at Kubinka is named "Adam" or "Ziu". These mortars were extremely effective for their time.

The 128mm pak 44 the Maus used was the same one the Jagdtiger had, and the same one that came from the field gun, that was used as a very effective artillery piece as well, and even better AA gun. So yes the did have a nice array of HE shells ready, even from back in 1943. Hope it helped, cheers.

T95 and T28 were the same vehicle IRL, just different designations (first T28 Superheavy Tank, then T95 Gun Motor Carriage, then the name was changed back to T28 Superheavy tank), the ingame T28 just has the outer tracks and spaced armour removed (they could be towed behind the tank) and features a modified front hull with a transmission (made up b WG), they just needed to come up with something to fill out the tier VIII slot.

The US M6 heavy had a 37mm Coax. Muitiple pre-WWII tanks had a small high velocity gun for anti-tank in a turret, and a large low velocity gun for work against bunkers. M3 Lee is the well known one from the US, but pretty much only the germans avoided this... on production tanks atleast.

With all that space inside you'd think they could make it quite a bit smaller, with the same armor thickness, and get a significant reduction weight...Even crammed with 128mm shells, it looks like the turret at least would be quite roomy.

Man the scale of that thing is just MASSIVE. That turret alone, I'm guessing, is heavier than some cars (maybe most). Would have been a nightmare if that had manual traverse only, you could run faster than that thing can point its gun at you.

I wonder if the Maus' major weak point located on the top rear hull is true? Hidden under the turret are air vents. If the Maus' turret is turned to the side and a shell could hit the air vents on the top rear hull? Then it would disable the tank. This might be a rare chance to hit the Maus in that spot.

Hmm, Is that flame-thrower comment accurate? Ive seen a few pictures with what looks like a fuel drum mounted to the back of the tank allowing for an external fuel tank. Was never able to conferm if it was actually linked to the internal fuel tank or was just there so they could get out and refuel it, but if that had been a hatch that allowed for a hose to run into the tanks that might make sense.

In theory it could be restored. But to do so they first have to get it out of the Museum. I think there are a few S-Boat engines left so that part could be taken care of. Its the guts of the turret and engine controls that would be hard to replace.

It was for targets that didn't need the 128mm. Not sure how that would have worked in practice, but the idea was that you could use it against softer targets while the 128mm was being reloaded. Also I'm not sure the 128mm had a full range of shells developed for it, so if it didn't have HE for example, the 75 would be needed for bunkers and the like. In practice, causing recoil while the loader is hauling a huge shell from the rack to the gun... doesn't seem wise.
@TheKruxed

No, modern tanks are using layered armour and some use depleted uranium sheets between the steel/titanium/ceramic/tungsten(whatever it may be using), as a rough example 100mm of today's armour would represent 500-1000mm of armour back in the days of ww2. You can check Chobham armour for detailed info of course then you have depleted uranium shells, energy penetrator set ups, laser guided etc which would knock out the maus before it even saw a modern tank. Then there is manoeuvrability

Actually it is. You will need your own workshop for super heavy things, you'll need the man power, experts and of course money for the material. The amount of steel on this tank is massive and there are no spare parts, almost everything will need to be custom made. You'll have to sign contracts with other companies to produce such parts. And most importantly you will need time many years. Look up the Panther restoration video to get the picture.

I doubt that the shell penetrated a spot with actual armor. As said by weightdefender it penetrated the turrets cheek, which I consider relatively reasonable. My assumption would have been that the shell penetrated the hull roof before detonating inside the tank (hull roof is 40mm AFAIK)

Chieftain, do you know of any ballistic data for that 75mm? I've heard it was a the KwK 44 L/36.5, but I've never seen any real data on the gun itself. Was it made just for the Maus/E-100 projects? Did it use a bottlenecked one-piece shell and brass, similar to the other 7.5cms? I have a standing suspicion that it would be roughly equivalent to the performance of the American 75mm guns of the era (better "cartridge" design, but somewhat shorter barrel).

It is real. It was either a drum for 1k Liters of fuel for the flame thrower or it is a external fuel tank like those used on Russian tanks. This a big tank with a big engine and uses a lot of fuel. Internal tanks will not carry it far. Like an aircraft you use the external fuel supply first then the internal.

Hellfire missiles didn't exist in world war two, and to be honest, I actually don't think a nuclear explosion of the sort we were able to generate back then would have really done any major damage to the Maus. The thing's incredibly heavy especially give its surface area, so it's not like it would go rolling away or get thrown around. Odds are the crew would suffer from the fallout, but I have no doubts the tank would survive with no major damage.
