Avenza Maps has many powerful navigation features that hikers can take advantage of while on the trail. Avenza Maps is a powerful navigation app for hikers to use offline maps. It uses Geospatial PDFs, GeoPDFs, or GeoTIFF to create offline maps for route navigation. There are a ton of free maps available from government agencies like NYSDEC, National Park Service, and USGS. Avenza Maps provides a store to purchase commercial maps from providers like National Geographic (NatGeo). You can also import your own Geospatial PDFs from tools like CalTOPO. Avenza Maps supports both iPhone and Android.

Avenza Maps is a great solution for offline maps. It has helped many new hikers navigate the trail of WNY in the WNY Hiking Challenge. We have made several videos on how to get the most out of Avenza. Thanks so much. Avenza has been a game changer for the challenge. It really helps new and experienced hikers on the more confusing trial systems. Good luck in this summer's challenge.

It really is! I love the offline maps feature. It is really handy in the backcountry and works well for the custom maps I deliver to WNY Hiking Challenge participants. Many State Parks and National Parks ship maps that are compatible with Avanza. It is a great tool.

Another great video. I've been using Avenza for a couple years now and had missed the greyed out compass feature. I'm sure you've emphasized his in other videos but when I recommend Avenza to people, I recommend they carry a paper map / compass as a backup and a battery pack to recharge their phone incase they run out of juice on the trail. Tx.

Always carry a paper map and compass! But I have to admit, Avenza is really a helpful app. I love being able to know exactly where I am on a trail. A battery backup is becoming one of my 10 essentials.

Great tutorial ! well explained! , I wonder if the tracking function can still work when you close the screen of your phone and also if the app drain the battery quickly
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles Жыл бұрын
Thank you! It will still track in the background. So it will use battery, but it is pretty efficient. I’d try it out first, battery life can vary from phone to phone. See you outside!

I do a lot of hiking on the North Country Trail and more often than not, I have no cell phone signal. Some of the features work but I tried to use the "Start Tracking" feature and that would not work. Do you need a cell phone signal? the GPS was turned on. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Clear explanations on what is possible. However, you don't really show how you navigate from one app screen to another and you go through some options very fast. This i OK for someone who knows the app well already, but not for someone who wants to learn. Trust me, I have been teaching for over 20 years :)

I totally agree. No matter how good you are at something, teaching is a totally different skill that not so many people have...

Great video, but I have a question. How do you follow the exact same route you took, not just because you can remember which way you came to waterfall? When you hit track to parking lot, it was as the crow flies. Does the app not leave a bread crumb trail to follow back? Thanks
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 2 жыл бұрын
You will see your route back if you turned on tracking when you started the hike.

Will the features you showed for mapping the trail layer be interrupted if I receive a call or text while hiking?
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Avanza Maps tracking and other functions work in the background when activated. On iPhone, it will light up the the time icon in the upper left when active like Google Maps does.

We use Avenza as a regular staple in wildland fire. The problem we have is transferring maps and data to various devices. The constant - "Can you Air Drop? Oh...you have an android. Sorry- reaction is pretty worn out. I've tried sending and/or receiving map files via e-mail, but that's been inconsistent (internet service is typically weak until the Comms Unit gets settled in- if we are even within any signal to utilize. Any thoughts on map sharing between devices?
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, Airdrop is an awesome feature. It would be awesome if there was a third-party app that makes an "Airdrop" between iPhone and Android. The power of Airdrop is it uses Bluetooth. Unfortunately, Apple does not all 3rd party apps to transfer files via Bluetooth. I am sure they claim for security reasons. It looks like Android has a similar feature called "Near by share". However, it does not help for Android to iPhone. If you have service, you can try snapdrop.net/. One offline solution would be to use a USB flash drive with the proper Android USB and iPhone connection like this amzn.to/3oNuIij Hope this helps.

I shut off “Use true north.” Is that a good thing? I’m not sure if declination is something to worry about ?
@OutsideChronicles

Are you navigating with your iPhone compass in the wilderness? If so, I would use true north and consider a manual compass.

Annoying has numerous features but all I wanted to know was the difficulty level of the trail colors
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 2 жыл бұрын
I am not quite sure what you are referring to, trail colors do not correspond to trail difficulty.
@commet1
@commet1 2 жыл бұрын
@@OutsideChronicles And, what might the trail colors mean to solve the big mystery?
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 2 жыл бұрын
@@commet1 They are arbitrary based on the agency's preference that manages the lands. In some places, the colors refer to the prevalent direction of the trail, for example red is east/west, blue is north/south. But there is no one standard and the colors are all over the place.
