For big-wave surfer and North Shore native Mark Healey, life has always revolved around the water. And no single activity draws upon his vast knowledge of the ocean more than the ancient art of spearfishing, which requires a remarkable combination of physical conditioning and technical skill.

I love this presentation, and I so relate to it. I played water polo and swam competitively for 20 years, body surfed, sailed all over the world... but I never tried spearfishing until I was 48 years old. I'm now 60, and I am much closer to the energy of the sea thru spearfishing... it has changed my life in so many ways. It is not about "slaying fish"... it is about the zen of becoming a creature of the sea. I am a Waterman.

"...That thing gave it's life to feed you, so you have to honor that..." Agreed 100%. Now, a little Pam on that grill and the thing that gave it's life to feed you won't stick! ; ). Nice video and commentary. Keep 'em coming!

Great video,Great words. At the beginning of my spearfishing live,i took dozens of fish for photo and eat. Sooner i found it was meaningless. i don t need so much. Now i just watch the fishes in the water, choose one or two the best tasted to shoot. Thanks for your sharing.The Waterman.

Wow, this is a great video, it's something i really can relate to. You should get this out to the masses to make people understand the true nature of spearfishing, that's it not just slaying fish. Through spearfishing i've learned so much from the ocean and now knows how to take a fish from the ocean to the dinner table. Really inspiring video and really professionaly done with the filming!

I can identify with your one on one relationship with what you hunt and eat, when we are out there we are part of nature in the mix, not observers anymore. It's like being in that headspace for a time that excludes thoughts of all else and therein lyes the escape from everyday life. The effort enhances greatly the value of the catch as does the prep enhance the meal and the overall satisfaction of spending time in Nature.

Beautiful video. Only gripe I have with it is the romanticization of being alone in the ocean. They film him from above as if he is on a lonesome spiritual journey, but all divers know the #1 rule is to never dive alone. I have seen too many local boys lose their life simply because they were alone. All it takes is 3-9 minutes to cause irreversible brain damage, and then it's all over. If you are interested in starting freediving, NEVER GO ALONE and take a course to learn proper procedures. Aloha.

Problem is that most people jump into the nearest bit of water and take the few rock fish that rest, decimating a local population and leaving nothing for snorkling kids to look at . The usually wound many fish too. You should need to pass a licence to do this except perhaps if you live somewhere like Patagonia.

Those complaining about this being nothing more than selling products should get over it. These brands support the mission statement of what's being said. I'd rather support those brands than those that don't give a second thought to raping our water planet for profit. There are no easy answers to this dilemma... Instead of piss moaning and complaining, why not come up with solutions? SMH...

MrDanielHawes weather causing suffering to another living creature is justifiable, I’ve been telling myself that these fish are going to die weather i bring there death or not but i still feel guilty when killing something.
@MrDanielHawes
@MrDanielHawes 4 жыл бұрын
@@stonedape8437 Hmm, thats a tough one but I feel you. One important thing that I try to remember is that wild animals very rarely die of old age and they also rarely die a ''nice'' or a ''clean death. You could perhaps rest assured that you have some control when it comes to the suffering of your food. A well placed shot will kill it instantly, knowing how to and putting it out of it's misery as quickly as possible is another form of control. In my opinion, spear fishing is without a doubt the best way to gather seafood. If it still doesn't sit well with you, then perhaps going vegetarian is the answer for you. A respectable decision also.
@stonedape8437
@stonedape8437 4 жыл бұрын
MrDanielHawes I believe spear fishing is the most ethical way to eat animal products, I definitely believe the suffering that happens in dairy and meat farming is much more destructive, cruel and unnecessary in every way so going vegetarian isn’t an option for me, maybe vegan but I feel like they’re is just so much enjoyment to be had through this sport wich makes it a verry tough decision and I use the same justifications as you, I also feel like it’s quite a shame to just ruin something as beautiful as a living animal they’re all so amazing and the more you study they’re behaviour the more you respect they’re way of living and realise we’re not superior to them just because we are more intelligent, from an evolutionary standpoint humans are definitely one of the weaker species.

@@stonedape8437 Haha, it is funny seeing us down in the water trying to act as though we belong when we so clearly don't. We may have the lions share of the brains but those seals, fish, sharks, crays and dolphins all know that we are the weakest swimmers at the very least! It sounds to me like you are destined to take a camera down with you instead of a spear gun. You still get to ''hunt'' the fish down, you just shoot them with a different tool. I always have a disposable film camera with me, attached to the float. Always nice to get photos of things that very few people will ever get to see. That way you would be free to go vegan if that is whats presenting itself but still enjoy the activity you get so much from.
