Silverton = the anti-Vail. If you ever annoyed by the Vail yuppies in Vail, ask them if they have skied Silverton and when they say no, then talk about how great it is.... Last time I was there a girl died there. The conditions were not good and the mountain was very icy. She had crappy rental skies that didn't have a sharp edge, couldn't engage on the ice and then slide and crashed into some rocks and then ragged dolled down to the bottom of the mountain. Conditions can also be great. I have only ever done the unguided skiing, which used to be for a greater portion of the season and only $50. Still a great time overall if you can ruff it a bit. The gestapo vans you ride back in to the lift (if then still have them) are an added bonus.

I think I’ll stick with the resorts in Utah thank you very much
I watch this video weeks & weeks ago, then got in my station wagon with my friend. It was colder than I thought it would be. We used our skis to go down the hills. We fell several times every run, sometimes cartwheeling down very angled runs we probly should not be on, becoming giant snowballs by the bottom. My friend hit a tree but was ok. Thank goodness pine is soft! Some people called us gumbys because we have green jackets. I said to these people, "Ha, ha, ha." Silverton ski lift resort was very very fun but need to build more green runs. I will be back in March with my friend and other friends. Oh, and I like town of Silverton too. Restaurant on main street with load of taxidermy had many local people in it.

I find it amazing how American skiers are so constrained by the resort boundaries. In Europe you can ski wherever you want, the only limitation is your insurance coverage and gear. Duck under a piste rope and you're on your own yes, but you're not being chased down by the snow police..... Does anyone know why America is like that? Is it the fact that the "mountain owners" might get sued if someone goes off-piste and has a tumble?
@davejohnsen85405 жыл бұрын
Because of American lawyers!
@morcputer5 жыл бұрын
vtrmcs and on the other side they have lifts without security bars
@austenpearson5 жыл бұрын
That’s somewhat untrue, a lot of American resorts with access to backcountry riding that is technically out of bounds will still let you go through by passing a gate that confirms you have an avi transceiver. Ducking under rope isn’t a no-no, there’s *gnerally* signs that say warn about it being un-patrolled.
@m3ph35 жыл бұрын
There are no snow police. You can go where ever you want depending on who owns the land. Most resorts are setup on public lands so its all open. Real American "off-piste" enthusiasts use snowmobiles and skins for back country access, not lifts. There are however snowmobile police. They fly helicopters and are very serious. In the summer, there are bike police also. If you get caught on a hiking only trail they can take your bike or your wheels and give you a big ticket. On a side note, there are considerably more avalanche deaths in Europe than in the US. Popularization of off-piste skiing in Europe is to blame...
@yuhboris3045 жыл бұрын
Back country skiing is incredibly popular in the US... it is not limited to Europe. You just happen to be watching a video about a specific resort, silverton, not a back country video. And yes, if skiers get hurt or lost after leaving resort property, the resort is liable, but in many places there is simply a sign with a disclaimer letting skiers know they are on their own so skiers are free to leave.

I was in Silverton in the late 90s and there was talk of this going around. I had been skiing the Wasatch in Utah since I moved to in Park City in 1983. It was tiny then. Not that much bigger than Silverton in spirit. And probably less famous. That's what I loved and why I moved there. But by the late 90s, Park City had grown so much I found it unbearable. I was already living in my van with my dog Arrow, so we decided hit the road and look for a place to ski that wasn't infested with developers. Silverton wasn't on the list, because it didn't have a ski area. Wolf Creek was the only ski area in Colorado on my list. After I checked out Wolf Creek and Pagosa Springs, I decided to have a look at Silverton just for the hell of it. I fell in love with it immediately. Both the terrain and the town. While I was there sniffing around, I caught wind of the Silver Mountain project and was intrigued. It sounded awesome to me. But it was still apparently wading through regulatory an liability issues and such, and was up against a lot, and I wasn't too optimistic that it would ever be allowed. I ended up in Pagosa Springs skiing Wolf Creek for three seasons before moving back to Park City. The town had is rustic charms, and the skiing at Wolf Creek could be off the charts. I highly recommend everyone stay away and don't bug the locals. I was a little surprised and more than a little pleased when I heard that Aaron & Jill Brill prevailed and made a lot of dreams come true.

Wolf Creek is more like Steamboat - flatter and wider with less hikeable terrrain. Point is if you don't know the difference between what these mountains offer you are probably only skiing the lift accessible terrain anyway and it doesn't really matter where you go. Snowboarders will ruin Silverton just like they have ruined scores of other ski areas around the country.
