Wolfenstein felt more suited to this list and certainly more played too.

Right as I dropped the gnome to go help her, she jumps in and the level ends. Needless to say, I helplessly watched from the camera as the gnome fell out of the chopper and I missed the achievement. Sometimes, I really hate the AI companions.

These are all pretty banal compared to three examples here. Metal Gear Solid : VR training, technically it wasnt a game within the overall game so much as it was a seperate game mode that was intended to help the player build skills to help in the actual game play, but so much was put into just that small afterthought that people played it so much and raved about it so much that an entire seperate game based on and expanding upon the concept was developed and released and was extremely popular. Also in the game was the additional side quests and easter eggs involving the camera. Final Fantasy 8: Triple Triad card game. This was a very sophisticated game played by npcs in the game whom the player could challenge. The game rules had variations depending on different in game regions and honestly would make a decent game to play in real life. Additionally it wasnt just some time passing easter egg in the game that was simply for novelty sake. It actually had importance to how one played the game as certain rare cards were needed to accomplish certain things in certain ways. The cards could also refined or converted into items. It would be really neat if square would develop and release a purpose built triple triad mobile game. But the best most profound mini game in a game ever: and it can hardly be called mini, more correctly it was an entire side quest in and of itself that was also integral yo the game. It was essientially and entire collection of mini in games. Final Fantasy 7 : Gold Saucer. Its been mentioned by others in this comment section, but none that i read really did it justice. Gold Saucer was something akin to an amusement park combined with las vegas. It had a full featured video arcade that had a few self referential games you could play. It was like playing a video game in which you are playing a video game whose content is based on something you had done in the video game earlier. It also had parody versions of some games that exist in actual arcades. There was sort of horse racing event in which the player could participate and even gamble on iirc. That mini game effected and was effected by choices made elsewhere in the game. And it wss very important to the game as well. There was what was essientially a 'virtual' battle arena where the player could battle enemies from the game, not without some cost with some protection in that the player couldnt really get KO'd, just lose the match There was a rollercoaster type ride which involved target shooting. A haunted hotel. A Play in which the player could participate. There is likely some thing im forgetting but thats the gist of it. Bonus entry. The legend of Zelda: links awakening has two really cool mini games. One fishing game where you used a pole to catch fish. The other was a carnival type claw game that was really awesome.

All of those were very well known and ad hoc for the game. Good list though. Legend of Legaia had a tower that was far more fun than the Golden Saucer.
