Loading screens really just gave you that breather you needed after a tough battle, or entertained you with models like in Fallout or Skyrim. And it's like you said, they taught you how to play the game. I'll never forget the moment when I was in a loading screen in Skyrim, frustrated with my equip load when the game helpfully told me that higher stamina = more space to pick up items. So, thank you loading screens, we'll miss you (except for you Jedi: Fallen Order and your 5 minute load times on modern consoles, you can bloody go quicker).

I really enjoy Bethesda games, but let’s be honest, being able to spin a 3d model isn’t really entertaining. It’s rarely even interesting, sometimes they weren’t even from the actual game, like the vault boy pins. Which at least made them mildly interesting for a moment. Seeing a slowly rotating model of a super mutant isn’t nearly as fun as killing a super mutant. Heck, even being able to play the pip boy games would’ve been better, and I might have actually played them. I played Atari 35 years ago, i don’t need to play it again. If I do I’d just pull it out and play better Atari games.

I really like the loading screens in Dishonored 2. They weren't very slow, but the mission would not start until you told it to. You could take your time to read the many tips available. Also loading screens help set the mood; remember the old Resident Evil games that hid the loading behind the door opening, that definitely made it creepier then if we just walked into the next room with or without loading.

On a slight adaptation of the minigame use for loading screens, Okami in the original PS2 incarnation actually allowed you to collect Demon Fangs if you completed a minigame where you covered the loading screen in pawprints. Given that these were collectables normally only available through "Floral Finishers" another way to get them while also doing something with the loading screen was nice.

Game Developers have already solved problems with fast loading screens. You just set up a button prompt that appears in the loading screen when your game is ready to start. That way you can read or do whatever you want, and then press a button to get back into playing the game.

Hmm. . . What if, since loading screens are basically gone, the games themselves took charge and did most of the useful functionality of what long loading screens did in the past? Like for example, when you boot up the game, you find your player character sitting down where they last saved the game, reciting in game tips and such. The player themselves must actually press a button in order to continue playing. Also, there's a button that allows the player character to enter the state at any time as well.

I can vouch for all of this. I have been upset by the end of a loading screen, for all of these reasons. One of those Namco racers had a minigame that was better than the actual game. It’s only worse now that I have an SSD. Though, I’ll never voluntarily go back, as the time saved is much more valuable. The minigames can still be used during matchmaking or even multiplayer on PC (when opponents don’t have an SSD.)

Use of the Overwatch footage for the "practicing while loading" part is appropriate because one of the later patches added the ability for you and your party to enter the practice range or a skirmish/deathmatch map during loading.

Actually, the game manuals aren't gone per se. They are just now in the games themselves (Usually somewhere in the main menu), a decision I think was made specifically to more or less keep you in the game. What's weird though is that even if you buy a physical copy as I still do, you look in the box and clearly there's the part to hold a manual that goes all the way back to the likes of the Sega Genesis but very few games actually used it (and even then, more so for non-manual things like papers with codes for your pre-order or Day 1 edition content, or extra advertising for a different game from the same publisher). Only PS4 game I have that actually has an old school manual is F1 2015.

PS - nice T-Shirt. It was the game on demo at the local store that I played wishing I had the money for a Sega.
