Although Roxas line about "who am I gonna have ice cream with?" is pretty goofy, it has some meaning, he wasn't even a year old then and knew nothing about the world, so for him, as axel told him, friends are people you have ice cream with, she was one of his only friends in the whole world, so he meant to say "who's gonna be my friend now?" or something similar. Still that line manages to make me sad and chuckle a little every time I hear it haha

Yorhm's story goes so much deeper than that: he's despised by the same people who asked him to be their ruler, and he links the fire in the hopes to do right by the people he rules and cares for (even though they despise him) - but even that goes wrong and they're all consumed. For extra feels, after you and Siegward toast following Yorhm's defeat, if you go up and talk to Siegward, all you get is silence (the implication that Siegward killed himself after fulfilling his duty to his friend 😭)

The biggest punch to the gut with Xion’s battle itself was the fact that her threat to absorb Roxas was a bluff to get him to kill her: After discovering the truth of what she was, and getting a fair amount of guilt from Riku and Namine (mostly Riku) to do the “right thing”, she knew she had to forfeit her life.

I was listening to the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 soundtrack yesterday and I think while Zack's final stand against the Shinra army is way sadder, it's not technically a bossfight. So, I submit the fight of Zack against Angeal as a suggestion. Angeal, so disgusted in what he was as an experiment, absorbs numerous monsters to become a real beast. He forces Zack's hand to kill him, making his pupil commit an assisted suicide. That to me is what makes it so awful. He did not have to stain Zack's hands like that. His heartbreaking sobs in the church with Aerith makes it all the worse. Angeal was one of my favorite characters in that game but what he made Zack do was terrible.

These are powerful companions that you have along your side since the beginning that must be put down one by one. After each is taken down, Yuna is visibly upset that a friend is killed. Even in Elden Ring, there are heartbreaking fights. Starscourge Radahn was turned into a mindless beast by the scarlet rot wielded by Malenia, Blade of Miquella, when they fought to a standstill in the Caelid Wilds. Radahn, who was described as the strongest of the demigods, was possessed of a strong sense of honor and integrity, and upon learning of Malenia’s rot being spread in Caelid, brought his flame knights there to burn it away to protect the people. He, in a classic display of pure good-heartedness, loved his horse so much that when he realized he was growing so large and heavy, went out of his way to learn gravity magic so he wouldn’t hurt it when he rode it. Radahn wasn’t just a demigod, he was a champion. His boss fight is a festival of combat and strength organized by his friend, Witch Hunter Jerren, in order to give his friend a dignified and honorable death in combat, thus freeing him from his scarlet madness. His funeral is a celebration of strength and combat prowess, and Radahn died a manly death surrounded by extraordinary warriors, including Iron Fist Alexander, Blaidd the Half Wolf, and the future Elden Lord.
@FelisImpurrator2 жыл бұрын
Blaidd himself is just. Eesh. Created explicitly by the Two Fingers to serve as the Sword of Damocles hanging over Ranni's neck, and despite that, loved her so much he fought the Greater Will until the very last second. His fight is a mercy kill at absolute best, and you can hear him trying to break free right as you approach. You don't even get to do as Ranni asks you to and tell him and Iji she loves them, because Blaidd is too far gone and Iji removes his helm to reveal himself to the Black-Knife assassins in order to keep them from Ranni's trail.

Felt so validating seeing Ori and the Will of the Wisps on this list. I love that game so much. It's a wonderful sequel to the original game, and I remember crying when Kwolok died, as well as at the end of the game. The Ori series has to be one of the first (if not THE first) game series to make me cry, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. The saddest bossfight I encountered was when I played FFCC: EoT for the first time. Not only do you have to put someone close to you out of misery to proceed, but it all could've been so easily preventable because one character basically became a self-fulfilling prophecy. It felt double cruel. The saddest thing is how empty the game is after and it just made me wish I didn't do it. I replayed the game several times, hoping there was an ending where I didn't have to do that. Sadly there doesn't seem to be one (or I missed the opportunity every single time). Either way: Sherlotta, you shall be missed...

Super glad to see Kwolok and the Ori games in general spotlighted here. Kwolok was the only boss in Will of the Wisps who gave me a substantially massive amount of trouble (based on the order the achievements are listed, I think I might have accidentally fought him earlier than I was supposed to), to the point that I only won by tanking him while clinging to the wall instead of putting up with being submerged in water. So of course, I was overjoyed when I finally did beat him-thinking at the time that he would just be freed from the monster’s possession and we’d all move on. But of course I only got to be happy and celebrate my hard-earned victory for about a minute before watching him die. And then I just felt sad and guilty that I’d had to beat him to death. He was such a pure and selfless character, and his fate was literally the last thing he deserved…

A few of the Darkest Dungeon bosses are like that. The Siren is equally as sad since she was a ordinary girl the Ancestor sacrificed to the fish folk for following him. @@mattkennedy9308 that's right, I just think the Miller is (closely followed by the Siren) the saddest of them all, considering the Siren eventually dies while the Miller is doomed to come back constantly after dying, since his land is beyond space and time now, and retains enough conscience to mourn the fate of his daughter.

I can't blame you for not doing Undertale. There are SO MANY heartbreaking bosses in Undertale's genocide. I would, however, like to see one in the next commenter edition if there is one. Take your pick: Toriel: Only wants to protect you and is so horrified by your power that she makes a joke about it before she dies, getting what is likely the second longest death scene in the game. Even worse, her battle theme is "Heartache." She doesn't want to hurt you. But you hurt her. There you are; the best part of Undertale--its music--making something heartbreaking even more so. PAPYRUS: you already did it. Undyne (the Undying): Is so horrified that she becomes super DETERMINED and refuses to die until she has made sure that you are dead and that monsters--and HUMANS, even though she hates them--are safe. Description is literally: "Reformed by her DETERMINATION to save the world." Intro theme is "But the Earth Refused to Die" and battle theme is "Battle Against a True Hero." Once again, Undertale's music makes things worse. This isn't supposed to happen! Mettaton: Really wants the views. Tries to kill you--once again, to save monsters AND humans--and immediately dies. He thought you would have wanted to join his fan club. Plus, he has special dialogue if you don't even hit anywhere near gold/max attack. Can't remember, don't want to put in the extra effort of putting it here (even though the knowledge of the world is literally at my fingertips right now). sans: YOU ALREADY DID IT. Asgore: Mistakes the warning that Flowey gave him and thinks that Frisk is a friendly monster, not the kind figuratively speaking. He tries to engage conversation and even offers Frisk a cup of tea, but then dies. Twice. Normally taking the spot for THE LONGEST death scene in the game. Flowey: Sad death? Well, yes, if you look into the lore. Essentially, he's a monster kid (no, not Monster Kid) named Asriel that turns into a flower and adapts a killer mindset and is existentially bored after what can only be BILLIONS of resets. And the worst part: in genocide, he uses his Asriel voice and PLEADS for mercy from Frisk (who he thinks is his best friend Chara), even though the entire time Flowey has been encouraging Frisk to kill EVERYONE. Unfortunately, everyone includes Flowey and he dies believing that he was killed by his best friend, and the REAL Chara ensures that Frisk suffers the same fate as Flowey. The only thing that's worse: IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT. NOT CHARA'S. NOT FRISK'S. YOURS. Because YOU are a part of Undertale's canon. YOU did this. YOU made Frisk kill EVERYONE. YOU are the reason that the normally happy world of Undertale is DESTROYED. DELETED. GONE. And it's all YOUR fault.

Not only is it Brother vs. Brother, but upon defeating him you are dumped into a cutscene where you learn the only thing Julius ever wanted was to live happily with his younger brother.
