If the script writers had even taken an introductory course in banking they would have know that it is illegal for any one individual to own more than $10,000 worth of shares in any US or state bank. When starting a bank corporation (all banks must be incorporated and follow federal or state guidelines) individual shares are usually sold a $10,000 a share, limit one to a customer. Now a corporation may buy more than one share if it is a holding corporation (financial institution with special rules) and unless the banking institution is a credit union or a savings and loan (again special rules) and may actually own shares in several different banks subject to the rules, regulations, and permission of bank regulators. This is just another BS story.

@@sivakumarsa Over the many centuries the idea of banks and banking have changed according to local, nation state, and even international needs. Banking is part of the history of money. Essentially banks were privately held businesses and usually operated as partnerships. With the rise of the rule of law in societies laws, regulations, expectations came into ply so as to curtail risk in financial transactions. Money is about trust and risk. Since money reduces the need for direct barter by offering the convenience of a third party facilitator it must be regulated so as to increase trust and reduce risk. Once the idea of the legal Trust came about (a third party holding title or money for two other parties) bank regulation started to increase. The legal status of banks were a reflection of the sovereign heads of states or representative government. Fast forward to the earlier American experiences where anyone who had some capital (money) could set up their own personal bank. As America grew the individual states would require charters to start a bank. The reason being was that money was a very important part of the economic growth process. The Panic of 1907 saw the last of the individually owned banks through failure. In America we saw the first attempt at national regulation of the banking industry in 1913 with the creation of the Federal Reserve Bank which is owned by all banks in this country. It is not a federal government agency but a private one which is overseen by the chairman and vice chairman appointed by the president of this country. With the economic depression that started in the late 1920s (it did not happen overnight) we saw Congress enact most of the banking laws and regulations that are in place now. Individual states could still charter banks that operated solely within their borders and could regulate them accordingly but with one great difference. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. a federal government agency had requirements that had to be met if the state charted bank wanted to be a member of the FDIC group. Now I'm just hitting a few of the highlights and there is quite a bit more to this story, but my original point is that the story line is fake in this movie. Hollywood loves to play fast and loose with its rags to riches stories that also involve social wrongs and revenge. But most Americans are ignorant of real estate and banking laws and business in general, so they will praise anything that makes them feel good and justify their emotions and ignorance.

Many of us know that Hollywood script writers take a few liberties with the truth for dramatic reasons. The premise for the story starts well but then meanders into Shaft the financier takes down the bad racist bankers by illegally buying their bank. If this film had never been made the world would never have missed it. Perhaps you should take your entertainment more seriously.
