Low budget and pretty old now, but this series had a wonderful, magical charm about it that the movies never quite managed to achieve.
@PresbianTier2 жыл бұрын
The first movie achieved it. The other two perhaps not

I was born in 1988, and as a kid, I loved the BBC series and the 05 adaptation, but I think for an adaptation to do justice to the books, a TV series is the best option. Netflix said they were working on one, but I'm pretty sure it's stuck in development hell. I'm not even sure if Netflix still has the rights from the Lewis estate. Some things from this particular version haven't aged very well, but I don't care. They did the best with what they had for the time and that's what I enjoy about it. There were matte paintings, composites, animatronics, animated characters interacting with live actors, scale models, a great wardrobe department, a wonderful score, and practical effects. Everything now is just CGI. I'm not criticizing the recent SFX/CG work on the recent Narnia movies, but computer graphics should only be used to enhance a scene. They really don't age well over time.

Completely agree with you, even the first movie was was not very good in my opinion .I couldn't even make it through. Just doesn't feel magic compared to the TV series
@JamalBrown-k1x Жыл бұрын
It had a very large budget.

Nope. The 2005 film is really the only adaptation that achieved the magic of Narnia. The cartoon, BBC, 2008 and 2010 projects missed the mark quite a bit. Although I do quite like the BBC Silver Chair. The other BBC projects suck so much. Especially the first two

I must have an old version of the BBC dvds, because I’ve never seen these before! I grew up with these versions, and even though I used to giggle at the special effects as a kid, I appreciate them much more now, and even more so because of how loyal this version was to the books. It’s a shame there were no Silver Chair outtakes, though. Tom Baker’s Puddleglum is a riot 😆

How they did the centaur was rather innovative for it's time

Honestly one of the best effects of the series.Not pretending it's great, but it's not horrible at all and I've been in VFX for 20 years.

The centaur actor actually is kind of impressive having to fit the movements of a horse at a high speed then immediately do that speech. While not being completely tired out is very impressive.

Considering the low budget and limited effects of the time, they certainly did a very respectable job. I also love how Barbara was clearly having a blast getting to play so over-the-top evil.

@@thefonzkiss I think the reason I called it a film was because we only had the first book/film on vhs and as a kid it felt like a film. We might of had the second episode/film but as a kid I never them as connected.

I know a lot of people hate the BBC version, but I think there’s a charm to it’s low budget and corny special effects. Perhaps maybe it’s a combination of the following: • it’s more faithful to the books nearly word for word • the Barbara Kellerman’s performance of the White Witch, as over the top as it is, it’s refreshingly satisfying because of how unintentionally funny it can be as an adult (as a kid she scared the shit out of me). • the voice and look of Aslan is just perfect • there’s some whimsical charm to the setting • it keeps the Christian themed that CS Lewis wanted

The BBC version was charming but it suffered from the obvious limits it had like the giant animals costumes and the cartoon creatures interacting with live action people...and some bad acting. The disney trilogy was epic but deviated too much from the book. Overall im afraid the animated film is the ultimate adaptation of the story. It may be bad but it follows the story right and at least the characters are...''proper''
