Outward can be a frustrating and overwhelming experience when first starting out. With this guide I’m hoping to give a bit of guidance to new players who feel lost. This guide also aims to give players a basic introduction to some of the gameplay systems in Outward and to provide a few useful tips.

Nice guide, my only gripe is the torches on the beach when you start are wasted weight. One of the first items you find in Ciezro storage is a lantern, and a torch is just wood and cloth if you need one for the cold. Also, if you unequip your armor and talk to the guy at the camp on the beach before he brings you to town, he feels bad for you and gives you free tattered clothes. You can deconstruct those into cloth for a few extra early bandages

I know this is 2 month old but, the torches can be usefull if you wanna get flamethower magic early and dont want to waste the cloth that at the start can be very precious because of bandages. That been said yeah pretty much any torch is useless to pick up otherwise (cold weather is not a problem until later on in the game or none at all depending on where you go).

Also, Michel is an easy save for a Writ which you can either sell for 45 silver, save for the future, or use to save the 150 silver for the blood price, too.

@@KainYusanagi Actually, without spoiling anything, its possible to get 2 Writs in the game, so IMHO the best use early on is to save the blood price and keep the silver for early gear

@@garou1911 It's possible to get more than two, but you have to be Holy Mission to do so. There are five instances to use it, as well, with some limitations depending on faction (one is Heroic Kingdom only, two are Blue Collective/Holy Mission only) and one it doesn't really make much sense to use it because the alternative is easy enough to obtain and it isn't very important (Flase, Sage Trainer, accepts either a writ or the Diademe de Gibier dish, for further dialogue about advanced rune combinations). One of the two specific for the Collective/Mission is also of 150 silver value, as well, while the other can be replaced by a Horror Chitin or Coralhorn Bow, to be fair.

In case anyone else wanted a proper list for all the potions and tea I made one : - Thick Oil + Water = Warm potion. Good for silver - Gravel Bettles + Blood Mushroom + Water = 3 Life Potions - Star Mushroom + Turnip + Water = 3 Astral Potions. Sell unless using mana - Boiling salt water gets clear water and salt - Set up cooking pot (can be bought from shopkeeper or town chef). place on campfire to set up - 2 meat + 2 salt = 5 Jerky (life regen) - 1 meat + 1 vegetable + 1 salt = Meat stew - 1 Gaberry jam (4 gaberry at cooking pot) + 1 bread = 3 Gaberry Tartine (stamina regen) can also be bought at town chef - 3 turnip + 1 salt = turnip pottage (mana regen) Teas Mineral Tea - restores 15 burn health, removes indigestion and gives impact resistance up buff. gravel beetle + water at cooking pot Spicy Tea - restores 15 burnt stamina, cures infection, gives cold weather defence buff. Ochre spice beetle + water at cooking pot Soothing Tea - Restores 15 burnt mana and cures colds. seaweed + water at cooking pot. Toxic Charge - good for extra silver. 2 grilled crabeye seed + 1 salt at alchemy table = 3 toxic charge

if the sorobor caravaner has scaled lather, buy them until you have 3, then craft a scaled satchel. It's one of the best early game backpacks.

Great stuff. All info I wish I knew when I started last night. I passed out in the cave trying to get that mushroom shield, got taken prisoner at a bandit camp and lost my lighthouse, and generally and just struggling to even gear up. Glad to know there's some good ways to get decent gear fairly easily so I'll probably head back into the starting town and try again.

FYI: Potion crafting for silver no longer works, as of the latest patch. Potion crafting now produces 1 potion, which actually loses money. Good guide still, just skip the potion bit.

Thanks for the video man, I've been trying to learn more to get into this game for a little while now. I played it for the first time and I was at the what the fuck? stage, second time I played it I did better; now I'm on like.. My 8th character, and I think I've got a pretty solid start, not the best but pretty solid. Made it to conflux mountain and got my magics, but I have a hard time figuring out exactly how much health and stamina I'm willing to sacrifice for the magic.

I know this video is 3 years old but this is for the new players or the players who just cant get a handle on the combat, i like to use the greatswords with the pommel counter skill (you get it for free when you try to leave cierzo through the main gate, you need to have a greatsword equipped tho, it will block the next incoming attack and will leave the enemy open for a counter attack that 9/10 will chunk them for 30-40% their hp, it has a pretty big activation window as well so its great to start with

Nice guide i have just a single thing on my mind.. its much easier to get the Tribe Favor from the guy on the beach behind the cave at 7:04 near the water u just need 1 bandage to help him and he will save you 150 silver since u can give the favor to the mayor and your house will remain your property.. but u need to do this fast cuz i think he dies after 5 days (not sure about the time)

You can figure out recipes on your own, just manually select which ingredients you put in the various crafting menus (question mark icon at top left of menu)

2 years later and im finally playing this game, followed you guide and ended up not being able to move cuz i was so overweight dur to everything I was picking up...went to sell some of it, but I have no idea what to sell aside from the 4 things you sold, was still grossly overweight and had half the money you did...either my game is different, I found more things than you, or you didnt show something... but now I was able to make 3 potions then was utterly poor aside from the 12 coins or w/e the currency was...not sure if its an update thing if they released any or what...but I think im gonna have to go with what little knowledge you have given me on how the mechanics work, and do this blind or something....thanks for the help anyway!

Fishing harpoon destroys hyenas. Of course something else could work too i just found it worked really well at the start. Looking through comments i see other people liked the fishing harpoon so not my secret weapon 😋.

Seems like I played the beginning way too quickly lol. Got the game yesterday on sale, had a good run for two hours, then got ambushed by bandits and lost everything. Very frustrating, because I really struggled to make any money. I did try to sell stuff, but either I'm dumb or the merchants don't buy everything? Step 1 loot the beach, step 2 wake up go into the storage area with 1 bandage jump off the edge run down the beach hand over bandage run back to town and speak to the mayor. You save your house with a tribal favor and then do everything else in this video and your good to go.
