What's the difference in Kayak Paddles? Watch This

If you kayak a lot you know your paddle is important, in this video I team up with Dan from Headwaters Kayak in Lodi, CA for a basic overview of various paddles made of different materials at a variety of cost points. Dan is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to paddle sports and he shares some great info with us. Choosing a paddle is often an overlooked task when purchasing a Kayak. I went with a cheap one when I first got into Kayak Fishing but am very pleased with the paddle I currently have.

Two mysteries of kayaking: The surf ski race (they were just inside the Golden Gate on the Mendicino side heading in, about 2006 or 07) where the guy coasting passes the guy paddling away. I wish I'd bookmarked the clip-- once you realize what's going on it makes absolutely no sense--and yet.... The second is seeing a kayak class taught for years and everyone including the instructors are paddling only with their shoulders.... When I'm coming back in and I'm exhausted and I see young new kayakers, I force myself to carefully shape up and paddle correctly. Those kids see me and figure I must know what I'm doing...so I'd better be doing it as good as I know how. The heavy cheap paddle... great as a back up paddle on the deck. (Newbs might not fully realize why you should always have a second paddle under the deck bungees. You're solo and you get dumped. Now you, your paddle and your kayak are in the water but not in arm's reach. The wind is blowing your kayak in one direction, the current is pushing your paddle in another direction, and you have to decide, do I go after the paddle or the kayak? With a spare on your kayak, you always go for the kayak. Now you won't be in the ocean with a paddle and no boat or boat and no paddle. I've swum-paddled but I wouldn't claim it's a proven rescue technique.) I've got a couple of Werner's, they are indestructible. Both about 13 years old, probably a couple of thousand hours on my Camano, less on my other one. The edges have a few nicks. The connecting mechanism has jammed up--salt, dirt. My advice, every season or so spend a couple of hours cleaning out all the crevices, maybe quirt in some lithium grease or whatever Werner recommends... I've had them jam a couple of times, not close properly a couple of times. Every time, I never found out what the problem was, but after cleaning and fussy, they worked. If I found a Werner paddle at a yard sale and it wouldn't connect together or the button wouldn't work--I'd buy it on the spot. Paddle form? Always work on your stroke. I spent the first year? paddling by lifting up water at the end of my stroke. I lifted a significant percentage of the Pacific Ocean for absolutely no reason. (I did get super strong abs). Then I took a stroke class with Jen Keck, Aqua Adventures. I was the only one in the class rotating, my rotation didn't have a lot to do with my paddle... She tuned me up. A year later I took the class again. What are you doing here? My stroke was pretty good, but there's always room for improvement. If you start out learning a really good stroke, it's better than having the best paddle or the best kayak. A more buoyant paddle. Huh. Learned something new. I'd really like to try that. And the simplest way to tune-up your stroke is to do some Frankenstein: arms straight out, elbows locked, now you can't paddle unless you rotate your torso. When you return to your elbows bent stroke you want to keep that torso rotation. and if I'm full of it on any of this... set me straight. See you on the water.

Definitely a great introduction! I have a sting Ray and manta ray that I live. Might’ve gone a bit more up the food chain had I seen this first! But on the budget side, I’ve been super impressed with the Quest Vapor at $80. It’s solid, flexible sizing, comfortable…it’s my daughter’s and she likes it better than mine which cost twice as much. What impressed me the most is the lack of rattling when shaken. A lot of cheaper paddles rattle and that means energy is lost on each stroke. Same with flexing paddle heads. Energy spent overcoming the flex is energy not going into propulsion. And as was mentioned, rigidity helps with steering. I’m gunning for a good list of gear at different price points. Frankly, the Vapor at $80 brings more contentment than some of the pricier bits. Also for a data point. My yak is 28” wide as I recall. I sit low and stand at a “towering” 5’7”…210-215 cm seems to be my best length. A little short by your comments, but I bury the whole paddle head so I think it’s okay. Good stuff, gentlemen!

Just to clarify, pro baseball players don’t grip a baseball bat tightly. It’s a very loose grip on the bat. That’s one reason bats go flying every once in a while. @@Outwestwithchris1 I bought an intex. At 71, not planning on going hard. However, when lake is glass and it gets windy, it's a whole different scenario. I have the cheap oars that came with the Intex challenger 1. I was caught in sudden change from calm to a bit rough. I never worked as hard trying to get back to shore from the other side of Turquoise Lake this weekend. I have an excellent life jacket! I kept calm after realizing this nubie didn't realize how rowing is important. I watched a video prior to kayaking. Very helpful. I just wish I were younger to handle good quality kayaks. Anyhoo, still fun to go to Chatfield and paddle around. Interesting video. Who knew there are so many paddles out there!

Wish I had a good kayak shop around me. I researched for months before upgrading my kayak and paddle. So in love with my choice, a perception carolina 12 with a aqua bound sting ray paddle. I wanted speed to really be able to explore everywhere I go. The closest lake to me I was happy with myself on a recreational kayak to do a lap around. I did three today and wasn't nearly as exhausted as the one would get me. Thanks for the info. I've been kayaking for over a decade and am excited to take my first class to learn how to roll =)

Really good info here. Especially the importance of length and the benefits of better materials, As a tradesman this correlates as better tools make for better quality of life while working. Get more done in less time with less mental and physical drain. I can totally see the value in that 400 dollar paddle. Especially over time and if you ever got into a bad situation and had to paddle for your life. As someone getting into kayaks specifically for ocean spearfishing, that's a reality that must be acknowledged. Thanks for taking the time. I wish I had a local shop with this knowledge and passion.

Great informative video. I bought my first paddle 26 years ago at Bass Pro Shops. It was a perception sea passage. It is bullet proof and I still use it as my spair. I paddle touring kayaks and like a longer paddle with thiner blades. When Im fishing I use to perception paddle. I built a cedar strip touring kayak 18 years ago and bought a bending branches wooden paddle. It has long narrow blades but is light weight compaired to the perception. I may have to try the one with the lighter shaft material and wood blades. I was glad you mentioned paddling form. If your form and techneque are good you can go all day. I go touring alot here in the Mo. Ozarks in our lakes. I usually cover 20 to 25 miles a day with 40lbs of camping gear, food and close combined. Thanks again and sorry for rambling. Good gear, good tech. and proper instruction can mean the difference in a good experiance or a great one.

This is a very good video with very good info. one thing about paddle blade size and shape. the long thin blade is more for a low angle style paddling and the wider shorter paddle is more for a higher angle paddle style. Most and not all, everyone has their own style of paddling but touring kayak are narrower and place the paddler lower in the water requiring a shorter length paddle and more of a lower angle paddle stroke. Sit on top kayaks are wider and place the kayaker higher out of the water requiring a longer paddle length and promoting a higher paddle angle. With the lower angle a long narrow blade tends to work better you get more of the blade in the water where a wide blade would still have the top portion above the water. With the higher angle you are able to get the wider blade under the water completely.

Hey Chris great vid on a great topic. Dan is so right on about paddles I tell people the same things all the time. A paddle can make or break you it is the most hands on piece of gear a kayaker has. I was lucky that I had enough time on the water before buying my first to know what I did not want. What Dan said about taking a class is the first thing anyone should do right after playing a kayak if you have not already. I see it all the time paddle with friends, groups or just watching KZbin vids. Just because you get the boat to move does not mean you know how to paddle. Its a nite and day difference knowing how to paddling the properly.

Yes that is good information, I just messed two points: What about the Greenland paddle. Those inuits are the ultimate kayak fishermen, I belive. And then what about the alignment of the blades to each other. Some are at the same alignment and some are at an angle against each other. And some are adjustable also in this point.

Greenland Paddles are great for long distance touring. Low wind resistance and the wood helps with the paddle coming back out of the water naturally. The different angles on the paddles is prominent in white water and some touring as well. I have an adjustable ferrule paddle where the angles can be adjusted wherever you'd like. This video focused heavily on paddles that are predominantly used for kayak fishing and not as much touring. Maybe a second video is in order that goes over Greenland's and some more details about adjusting angles? Thanks!

Originally I was going to get a cheap feelfree paddle but after watching this I went with an Aqua Bound Tango. Got one for my wife too! They are super light and the graphics are awesome.

Thank you both for taking the time to make such a comprehensive informative video. I am new to sea kayaking, with a 20yr old second hand boat that has been really well cared for (Perception Contour 450) and a cheap old aluminium paddle, both serving me well, but now that I am spending more time on the water, I have been advised to spend good money on a new paddle and really no clue what best suits. Some great info here. I am in Australia or I'd buy one from Dan! I have smallish hands and my right hand was getting sore, probably death grip, I can open/swivel the left palm and am practising with the right/control hand too, I think I could do with a narrower shaft, definitely lighter weight, and probably narrow blades for 2-3 hour paddles as I usually paddle into wind/tide one way, then turn around with the wind/tide running the other way?
