As an ex shopper myself, I feel the council is to blame also. They do not encourage people with cars to shop and they want everyone to take the bus, so they hike the car park prices so it makes the bus cheaper than parking in town. Sounds good on paper, but.... How many people can do a food shop or xmas shopping in one go on the bus. The buses in my city are always late, some are no-shows, prices keep going up. Car park charges are £6 per hour in the city and outskirt areas have had car park spaces taken away and cycle lanes put in their place and parking price increase. It is now far easier, cheaper and time saving for me to just order online.

Online shopping has definitely impacted brick and mortar businesses. Covid helped add to that. Many started buying online and haven't gone back.

The councils have killed City centres by making parking both difficult and expensive.
@AP-nj1mr

@Scott Smith I would go to City centre a LOT if I didn't have to pay through the nose for parking . I would probably do my shopping in the city centre market rather than big supermarkets. But it is just too difficult to go by bus and carry everything you bought from shop to shop until you get on a crowded (and not cheap) bus to get back.

Covid helped get everyone buying online. Many haven't gone back to the old way of doing it. If they don't have the cost of running the stores with possible liability issues it's more convenient for a company to go online only.

I live in Hull and the council were warned about this when planning permission was granted for St Stephens shopping centre. This was obviously granted with the usual kickbacks and back handers for councilors who have never given a damn about Hull. The possibility of roofing Whitefriargate as a shopping centre was kicked into touch immediately.

you can tell who’s dominating the high street vape shops and other cheap retailers. Vapes cause more health damage than cigarette yet businesses are allowed to display their products while in reality this should’ve been prevented from being offered a trade license

I blame local councils more than changing consumer habits for the decline of the high street. Business rates are now ridiculously expensive and most high streets are just unwelcoming places. And they have been so for quite some time. Even if you take online shopping out of the equation. Most consumers would rather shop at an out of town big box store or shopping mall.

Reason why: Do I A. Spend a fortune on petrol and parking, and walk about in the cold and wet carrying bags and getting annoyed by other people. Or B. Stay sat down in peace in my warm home, make a few clicks with my mouse or finger, and have what I want delivered to me the very next day.

Councils don't want the high street , They actually save money , No need for policing No need for street cleaners The property owners still pay council tax and rates , I come from Ipswich,the town's been dying for years , Nightlife gone , There's a old odeon ,which has stood empty for years ,The population wanted an entertainment venue /casino ,the council let it as a church ,which I find very strange as the buildings that were purpose built for worship have been converted for other uses ,because they can't fill them

All happened since brexit then COVID and cost of living in a spate of 2 years, the only trouble with online shopping is that you can’t view the items properly, so I would still shop in retails to buy things to look before you buy, the only time I shop online if it’s not available in store for instance linyx aftershave which is discontinued from Superdrug, B&M and Tesco where I used to buy from.

only solution is small towns need to have their own currency and keep an eco system that works. CBDCs can do this maybe by making prices be affordable for locals but add a 20% you ain't part of our town tax on GOODs.

Weird but my town the high street is always full of people. Other week me and the gf went in thought we would get a coffee as we ain’t had a proper coffee out in a very long time and every single coffee (there’s lots of Them that’s for sure) was full and couldn’t get one unless we sat outside (screw that in the cold) people struggle with energy but not paying over 4 pound for a coffee though
