Easy to prevent theft. Easy to verify if there are outside forces lobbying for unrest in NY. I'm from Europe, but I think in USA this is also possible. Not sure why nobody tried doing it yet. Shops that would do it, would break the bank in NYC. There is something called "certificate of good conduct". This is a way, to determine if someone has any criminal record. It's very likely, that most people who are in that line of "work", also have criminal record. Team up with local shops, and finance an opt in database for people who have no criminal record. People can register online, and are issued a pass card. You can only enter the shop premise, if you are allowed, and have a card issued. Otherwise, you are considered a trespasser on private property, or even breaking and entering. Consult lawyers how far can they push it, find all ways, legal exploits to bend the law to penalize barging into a shop without a pass and or permission as much it's possible, make a shop a "private club" or some such. If you are issued a card, and are found stealing, it can be revoked anyway. Theft would fall on it's face. Shops could afford to make products wayyyy cheaper than shops which have to deal with theft. People would feel safer in those places. Everyone would go shop there ( well, not everyone 😉 ). People today lost all problem solving skills. Unless government does everything for them, they act hopeless and roll over.

In China, shop owners can use violence to defend themselves against shoplifters. But, given there are so many street cameras in Chinese cities, thieves are usually caught within hours. Currently, in China shop lifting is pretty much nonexistent, because 1: shop owners can defend themselves and 2: the police will catch you and will persecute you if you get caught. Catch and release is not a thing in China. I think shop lifting in the US is running out of control is because the government is giving criminals too many rights. At this point, it almost feel like criminals have more rights than law abiding citizens. However, every time when the government tries to protect the rights of a criminal, the government is doing a dis-service to anyone who obeys the law. To punish a criminal harshly, is the greatest respect to any law abiding citizens. It is sad to see what the US is becoming.

That is going to be the future of retail, where nothing is on a shelf at all.

I am a homeless resident of Portland, OR and bad, ineffective policies arent limited to NYC, unfortunately. While I agree that some former laws were a bit draconian and lead to unfair targeting of the poor and minorities, going the opposite direction and coddling unrepentant, repeat offenders only exacerbates the problem. There is NOTHING wrong with enacting stiffer penalties for thieves, especially those with multiple violations in a short period of time and those who attack employees. I do believe that 1st time offenders, those whose crimes are clearly linked to addiction, and thieves who steal less than $200 should receive priority for Detox/ Rehab, Outpatient counseling and treatment, and supervised probation for at least a year. The monetary amount for felony thefts should be reduced to $200 and with every repeat offense, that amount should be halved and the sentence should be doubled. When a person faces years in prison for stealing a pair of shoes, there will always be detractors..but I wonder how they will defend it when it turns out this is their 4th or 5th charge in under 2 years. This has got to be stopped before going to the grocery store requires more security checks than the airport. Portland recently lost all of its Walmart locations and the downtown Target flagship store also closed- within a year of buying the whole building and sinking over a million dollars into renovations. There's just no excuse for it. I've been homeless for 7 years now and I deal with a 24-year long opiate addiction- and I have ZERO need to steal. Oregon has a .10 deposit on recyclable bottles and cans and anyone with a shred of work ethic and integrity can easily earn enough to meet the most basic needs. Portland offers multiple venues for low-barrier drug treatment, and any addict who wishes to get clean or get on suboxone can do so in 1 or 2 days- free. Stealing is only "necessary" for those who are lazy or morally bankrupt

You should see what they've done to San Francisco. Last year my brother was at a drug store in downtown San Francisco getting some aspirin. There was a security guard at the register. People were bringing up merchandise, the cashiers were ringing up the stuff and at $800 exactly, the people were walking out with out paying. The Governor declared that no one would be prosecuted for basically stealing stuff as long as it was $800 or less. If they stole over $800 then it was a different story. My brother asked the security guard, "You mean you wouldn't stop me from walking out the store with this aspirin?" Guard said, "Nope. Go ahead." My brother did pay for the aspirin. San Francisco is now almost a ghost town. Businesses have shut down and moved out. The homeless have taken over. People have moved out. I live in Minnesota. Absolutely will not go to Mall of America. The gangs have taken over. Last time I was up in the Cities was about 10 years ago for a doctor appointment. Haven't been back since. In my neighborhood, in Chicago, the thieves fallow the delivery trucks; and they steal the goods right out of the delivery guy’s hands.

From what I’ve gathered, in the 90s NYC had a similar problem, but it was fixed. So, my first thought was to do what they did in the 90s again. So, I looked up what was done, low and behold: “The police measure that most consistently reduces crime is the arrest rate... Felony arrest rates (except for motor vehicle thefts) rose 50 to 70 percent in the 1990s. When arrests of burglars increased 10 percent, the number of burglaries fell 2.7 to 3.2 percent. When the arrest rate of robbers rose 10 percent, the number of robberies fell 5.7 to 5.9 percent.” Courtesy of National Bureau of Economic Research. Not surprised in the slightest. Seems like NYC lawmakers live in another dimesion

They have completely discredited him, but Guliani was the only one who understood the theory Broken Windows. Most of the turnstile jumpers had warrants, squeege guys disappeared, graffiti stopped. The place was livable. It took less than 30 years to completely reverse everything. At one point AOC had to run off Amazon, now, you won't even get a nibble from a potential employer. Who really wants to work in the Gangster's Paradise?

Why do our politicians want to incentivize criminal activity instead of legal, tax-paying activity? They themselves must be part of the beneficiary chain. -E.K.

Funny how we in Europe open more and more unmanned shops because we got zero theft in many places, while 3rd world USA get more and more theft and ignores how we solved that problem long ago. (psst.. we tax the billionaires and pay people a living wage - its called equality)
