Question for everyone: Who is your main character in Smash and have you played the game they originate from?

Wii Fit Trainer, Simon Belmont, and Villager, and yes I've played at least one game for each.

Sora and Sephiroth and I've played every "Kingdom Hearts" game and the original "Final Fantasy VII". I've yet to play the remake of FF7.

Pikachu/Pichu/Cloud/Sephiroth/Pyra/Mythra/Sora (I like to change up characters rather than just stick to only one since there are a ton of great characters) Yep. Played all of the games before playing them in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Pokemon, Final Fantasy VII, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Kingdom Hearts.

Growing up with smash, all my wished characters from the games I've played got in and were brokenly good. Metaknight for Brawl and Bayonetta for Sm4sh. I didn't wish anymore for Ult after the last 2 favs got in.

It's worth mentioning that some of these trailers originally aired without the Smash Bros intro, or in other non-related presentations. For example, the Joker trailer first aired during the Game Awards, and it was only revealed to be a Smash trailer when he flips over the invitation. Similar situation with Pyra and Mythra, who aired in a Nintendo Direct, and since the entire trailer was animated by the Xenoblade 2 team and done, I think, in-engine, it was a big surprise when it turned out to be Smash
@KingKuron_17 сағат бұрын
Man that second trailer was so iconic. Everyone freaked out from the "Everyone is HERE" catch title because we were all thinking, "they couldn't possibly mean EVERYONE," and then we saw Pichu. The joke character from Smash Bros. Melee, and we instantly knew they meant EVERYONE.

Ridley was a huge reveal back in the day considering he was never allowed to be playable in previous games because he was deemed “too big” in size. I miss getting excited for smash reveals man, hope they consider a new game for the switch 2.

Which is really funny since how big he is varies in size. Some games he's no bigger than Samus.

I guess here's a factoid for every fighter in Smash: - *01: Mario (Super Mario):* In Ultimate, his hat sometimes becomes Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey - namely at times with Super Jump Punch (this also turns the coins that fly out of Mario's fist into local purple coins). - *02: Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong):* Both of his Final Smashes, Konga Beat (Brawl/For) and Jungle Rush (Ultimate), are based on his bongo games for GameCube (Donkey Konga and Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat). - *03: Link (The Legend of Zelda):* Different versions of Link have appeared in the Smash series - Ocarina of Time for the first game and Melee, Twilight Princess for Brawl and For, and Breath of the Wild for Ultimate. - *04: Samus (Metroid):* - *04e: Dark Samus (Metroid Prime):* This is technically the first fighter to come from North America (Retro Studios). - *05: Yoshi (Yoshi):* The most recent Final Smash, Stampede, draws from Yoshi's segment of Melee's lauded opening. - *06: Kirby (Kirby):* There are a lot of interesting Copy hats that he gets from certain fighters. For instance, Mr. Game & Watch makes Kirby all-black with gray outlining, copying Steve makes Kirby blocky, copying Shulk only copies his Monado and not his hair, etc. - *07: Fox (Star Fox):* His recent Final Smash, Team Star Fox, has a unique line if used on Wolf (as you saw). - *08: Pikachu (Pokemon):* This one is primarily male, but two of the costumes use female Pikachu instead (the Selene Cap and Pikachu Libre ones). - *09: Luigi (Super Mario):* "Vampire Killer" (Simon's and Richter's trailer) was the first time we'd see his Poltergust G-00, the version that would appear in Luigi's Mansion 3 (10 months after Ultimate's release). - *10: Ness (EarthBound):* Aside from PK Flash, he doesn't actually use any of the PSI powers he uses in Smash. Those all come from his allies, Paula and Poo (the two that show up during his PK Starstorm Final Smash). - *11: Captain Falcon (F-Zero):* His VA, Ryo Horikawa, hadn't been called in for more Captain Falcon voice lines until Min Min's trailer (so we could hear him slurp up ramen). - *12: Jigglypuff (Pokemon):* Its Rest special move is its "lethal joke" attack, dealing heavy damage (and Flower status from Brawl onward) if it's close enough to opponents when activating. - *13: Peach (Super Mario):* Her Vegetable special move can pluck not just veggies, but also items like Mr. Saturns and Bob-ombs. - *13e: Daisy (Super Mario):* Peach used to have a Daisy palette until Ultimate, when Daisy joined as her Echo Fighter. - *14: Bowser (Super Mario):* The Giga Bowser form is a boss version that appeared in Melee. Ultimate reintroduces this boss battle. - *15: Ice Climbers (Ice Climber):* Due to the 3DS's limitations, the Ice Climbers couldn't function well in For. - *16: Sheik (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time):* When Sheik was first confirmed for Melee, the trainer kept her ability to transform to Zelda and back a secret (as Sheik's true identity was secret until the near-end of Ocarina of Time). - *17: Zelda (The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past):* She used to have Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess appearances in Melee, Brawl, and For (same as Link). - *18: Dr. Mario (Dr. Mario):* His Super Sheet special move used to animate the same as Mario's Cape, but Ultimate changed the animation to flipping a sheet up from the ground. - *19: Pichu (Pokemon Gold/Silver):* Its electric attacks deal some recoil damage, as a nod to its Pokedex entries, which describe how little control it has over its electricity. - *20: Falco (Star Fox):* The dialogue in his Team Star Fox Final Smash changes if he catches more than one opponent at the start. - *21: Marth (Fire Emblem):* He used to only have Japanese dialogue, up until Ultimate also gave his his English voice (same with Roy). - *21e: Lucina (Fire Emblem Awakening):* She's Marth's Echo Fighter because she used "Marth" as a title when she appeared from the future (with her mask on). - *22: Young Link (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time):* His victory video back in Melee focused solely on his Lon Lon Milk-drinking taunt. - *23: Ganondorf (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time):* The sword he uses in smash attacks only exists in a Spaceworld demo that displayed the graphics of the GameCube. - *24: Mewtwo (Pokemon):* It doesn't typically have any dialogue, except in Melee when language is set to Japanese - its general voice is the same, but its victory animations may use dialogue lines. - *25: Roy (Fire Emblem: Binding Blade):* He was introduced in Melee about four months before his home game released. - *25e: Chrom (Fire Emblem Awakening):* His Final Smash, Awakening Aether, is of course based on the Aether skill's animation in Awakening. - *26: Mr. Game & Watch (Game & Watch):* The music tracks for the Game & Watch stages, as well as his victory themes, are all made with Game & Watch sound effects. - *27: Meta Knight (Kirby's Adventure):* His original Final Smash, Galaxia Darkness, would eventually enter the Kirby series as one of the moves that Meta Knight can use in his campaign in Planet Robobot. - *28: Pit (Kid Icarus):* His design used to be an original for Brawl, but would get official use in Kid Icarus Uprising. - *28e: Dark Pit (Kid Icarus Uprising):* In that vein, one of Pit's costumes in Brawl would become a separate character in Uprising. He's not evil, just...rebellious. - *29: Zero Suit Samus (Metroid Zero Mission):* She used to be a form that Samus takes after using her Zero Laser Final Smash (and Zero Suit Samus would become Samus via her Final Smash). This trend broke in For, making both versions into separate fighters. - *30: Wario (Wario Land/WarioWare):* He has an equal amount of costumes from WarioWare (biker outfit) and Wario Land (overalls). In fact, back in Brawl, he had the most number of costumes in a single fighter. - *31: Snake (Metal Gear):* This is actually the first guest star in Smash. Hideo Kojima himself greatly requested him during Melee's development, though it was too late to add more fighters at that time - likely why Snake was one of the first five newcomers revealed for Brawl. - *32: Ike (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance):* He has two different appearances - Path of Radiance (Brawl) and Radiant Dawn (For). Ultimate uses both versions, and they have different voice tones (and victory lines). - *33-35: Pokemon Trainer, w/Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard (Pokemon):* In For, form-changing wasn't possible (at least on 3DS hardware), so only Charizard appeared there. The full Pokemon Trainer setup returned in Ultimate. Oh, and the boy and girl versions of the Trainer have official names - Red and Leaf. - *36: Diddy Kong (Donkey Kong Country):* This would be the first fighter to come from a non-Japanese studio (Rareware). - *37: Lucas (Mother 3):* If EarthBound 64 (the original version of Mother 3) had actually released, it was likely that Lucas would have replaced Ness back in Melee. - *38: Sonic (Sonic The Hedgehog):* His victory theme comes straight out of Sonic The Hedgehog (2006). - *39: King Dedede (Kirby):* Did you know that Sakurai himself voices Dedede? - *40: Olimar (Pikmin):* In Brawl, Olimar could have six Pikmin, and they were plucked in random orders. From For onward, Olimar has three Pikmin, plucked in a set order (Red, Yellow, Blue, White, Purple). Alph also showed up as an alt. - *41: Lucario (Pokemon Diamond/Pearl):* It wasn't until For that Lucario would be voiced by Sean Schemmel (who voiced the Lucario from the eighth Pokemon movie). - *42: R.O.B. (Famicom/NES):* Depending on the language, the P1 (default) costume will either be the NES look or the Famicom look, while the other is the P2 (second) costume. - *43: Toon Link (The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker):* In Brawl's Adventure Mode, he was one of three fighters who were only found in secret post-game areas (along with Jigglypuff and Wolf). - *44: Wolf (Star Fox 64):* The dialogue in his Team Star Wolf Final Smash changes if he's attacking Fox. (to be cont'd)
@MrAuthor3DSКүн бұрын
- *45: Villager (Animal Crossing):* They used to have a blank look that didn't change based on direction (until Ultimate), which contributed to the fanon interpretation of...well, a very mentally-disturbed Villager. - *46: Mega Man (Mega Man):* His Mega Legends Final Smash brings in X, Volnutt, MegaMan.EXE, and Geo Stelar to assist. Ultimate added in Proto Man and Bass. - *47: Wii Fit Trainer (Wii Fit):* This fighter's female and male voices come in three versions - Japanese, American English, and European English. - *48: Rosalina & Luma (Super Mario Galaxy):* In For, her Power Star Final Smash's star shots can push opponents away - but throwing opponents into the star itself deals immense damage. Grand Star's star shots pull foes in, but its damage isn't as absurd as a trade-off. - *49: Little Mac (Punch-Out!!):* He had the most number of costumes in For - six in his normal appearance, and six as Wireframe Mac. Ultimate only kept the default and tracksuit versions of Wireframe Mac. - *50: Greninja (Pokemon X/Y):* This fighter was chosen when there was only concept art of it during Pokemon X/Y's development. - *51-53: Mii Fighters (Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, Mii Gunner):* As you can imagine, certain Mii Fighter costumes got a lot of popularity - mainly the Sans and Cuphead costumes for Mii Gunner. - *54: Palutena (Kid Icarus):* She was also redesigned for Brawl, which would carry over into Kid Icarus Uprising. In fact, her special moves and Final Smash are based on Powers that she can use to assist Pit in-game. - *55: PAC-MAN (PAC-MAN):* He mainly pulls from some of his own games, mainly PAC-MAN and PAC-LAND, but also brings in a couple elements from Galaga (his grab, mainly). He also has a taunt that displays sprites from (or based on) various Namco games. - *56: Robin (Fire Emblem Awakening):* Their magic tomes and Levin Swords have limited durability - a long-running mechanic in the Fire Emblem series. - *57: Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles):* The only Monado Arts that he uses in-game are Speed, Shield, and Buster. Jump, however, uses the same glow as Purge, while Smash uses the glow of Meyneth's Monado. - *58: Bowser Jr. (Super Mario):* The Koopalings all serve as his alternate costumes, as the moveset is chiefly focused on the Junior Clown Car itself. - *59: Duck Hunt (Duck Hunt):* Their moveset includes elements from other NES Zapper games (Hogan's Alley and Wild Gunmen). - *60: Ryu (Street Fighter):* Hadouken, Tatsumaki Senpukyuaku, and Shoryuken can be inputted like general special moves, but their traditional command inputs can also be used for more power. - *60e: Ken (Street Fighter):* Sakurai considers Ken to be the first Echo Fighter in all of fighting game history - though if you counted all genres, it would be Luigi. - *61: Cloud (Final Fantasy VII):* He's the only fighter whose Final Smash animates differently based on his costume - his Advent Children costume using Omnislash Ver. 5. Its duration and total damage are the same as Omnislash's. - *62: Corrin (Fire Emblem Fates):* Their game was already out, at least in Japan, when this trailer aired. However, the Revelations path - the source of Yato's Omega form - had yet to be announced. - *63: Bayonetta (Bayonetta):* She's one of the fighters who was chosen by popular vote in the Fighter Ballot. - *64: Inkling (Splatoon):* Did you know that both Inkling genders share a voice actor? - *65: Ridley (Metroid):* "Ridley Hits The Big Time" - based on the long-running joke that Ridley couldn't be a fighter because he was too big. - *66: Simon (Castlevania):* One of his victory animations references a glitch where he constantly jumps and whips after clearing a stage. - *66e: Richter (Castlevania: Rondo of Blood):* A lot of the moves in the Belmonts' movesets came from Richter - to the point that Sakurai wondered if Simon could be considered Richter's Echo Fighter. - *67: King K. Rool (Donkey Kong Country):* He was also chosen based on the Fighter Ballot, namely its later leg. - *68: Isabelle (Animal Crossing: New Leaf):* - *69: Incineroar (Pokemon Sun/Moon):* Its Alolan Whip special move is the only one among Pokemon that doesn't come from the games (or the TCG, for that matter). - *70: Piranha Plant (Super Mario Bros.):* Petey Piranha's use of cages comes from Brawl's Adventure Mode, where he used cages to hold Peach and Zelda captive. - *71: Joker (Persona 5):* The original version of the trailer appeared, in a dramatic fashion, at The Game Awards 2018 - just a day before Ultimate released. - *72: Hero (Dragon Quest):* The four playable Heroes are from Dragon Quests 11, 3, 4, and 8, in that order. The other seven from the series appear for the Gigaslash Final Smash. Their "official names" are Eleven, Arus, Solo, and Eight (respectively). - *73: Banjo & Kazooie (Banjo-Kazooie):* Their game was made by Rareware, now Rare, same as the original Donkey Kong Country games - hence why their trailer is a sequel to K. Rool's. - *74: Terry (Fatal Fury):* Almost everyone in his trailer (Kyo Kusanagi, Ryo Hayazaki, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, Geese Howard, Iori Yagami) cameos in the King of Fighters Stadium. Nakoruru is the only exception, only being available in a DLC Mii Fighter costume. - *75: Byleth (Fire Emblem: Three Houses):* Sothis's snark of "I see. Too many swordsmen, is it?" is clear proof the Smash crew has studied for their comedy material - specifically, the Smash fanbase griping about how many swordfighters Smash has (not just from the Fire Emblem group, but in general). - *76: Min Min (ARMS):* Before her trailer aired, it was confirmed a few months ahead of time that this would be someone from ARMS. This left us a lot of time to guess which fighter it could be. - *77: Steve (Minecraft):* All the stages had to be updated with data for the materials that Steve could mine from them, as well as placement for blocks. - *78: Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII):* Acknowledging Sephiroth's status as a boss enemy, there was a temporary event for anyone who bought his Challenger Pack beforehand where you could battle Sephiroth and unlock him a little earlier. His Classic Mode route also has him fighting against all of Ultimate's bosses (Giga Bowser, Galleon, Rathalos, Ganon, Dracula, Marx, Master Hand, and Crazy Hand). - *79-80: Pyra/Mythra (Xenoblade Chronicles 2):* Mythra already had those black leggings as an edit to her Spirit (graphics of characters and items from various games used as equippables) in the base game - this also became an actual costume in Xenoblade 2. Pyra didn't have any leggings before her fighter appearance here, but here she has 'em. - *81: Kazuya (Tekken):* His "victory theme" doesn't use any music or the usual Smash announcer - instead, it's just the Tekken announcer saying "Kazuya Mishima wins". - *82: Sora (Kingdom Hearts):* If he deals the last blow in a Stamina battle, a special slo-mo and bloom camera effect will happen, much like in the Kingdom Hearts series.

The "Matrix fight scene" with the executives is Satoru Iwata (then the president of Nintendo) and Reggie Fils-Amie (then the president of Nintendo of America). Both would appear in a lot of marketing for the brand as a whole. Iwata died a year or so after Smash 4 was released, and Fils-Amie left Nintento to be a brand consultant for other companies. If you've ever heard "my body is ready," it started from something Reggie said at a live gaming event. Smash characters from other mediums? TECHNICALLY there is one and that's R.O.B., who was a video game peripheral in the mid 1980s. You hooked him to your NES and he could interact with a handful of games. Look up the Maximilian Dood reaction to Cloud's reveal. It's one of the most popular reaction videos ever made.

The game with those first characters is Splatoon. Good call on Richter, he is in fact the protagonist of a different Castlevania. Isabelle is from Animal Crossing, which is an entire series of games that first came to the US in 2001 with a Gamecube release although the *actual* first game was the Japan-only N64 version. Incineroar is a Pokémon from the then-most-recent generation of games (there's been two more since), so good call on that! Music probably tipped you off, Pokémon music is prettty distinctive. I hadn't seen Joker before that trailer either. I was honestly a bit disappointed it wasn't Joker from DC comics who fights Batman all the time. Dragon Quest is a long series of RPGs with different player-nameable main characters, and so the character doesn't actually have a canonical name besides "the hero". But they're all just different costumes/skins of the same character here, so good call on that. And yeah, Dragon Quest was called Dragon Warrior for the original releases of the first game in the US. Banjo-Kazooie was the first "What the *fuck* they actually did it?" of the Ultimate era. People had wanted Banjo-Kazooie in Smash since Melee in 2001 and it hadn't happened because Banjo-Kazooie are Rareware characters and Microsoft bought Rareware and all their games are on Xbox now. Yeah, that's an entirely new animation for the Terry trailer. They really put some production value into these. Also as a general rule, any character you haven't heard of that uses a sword is from Fire Emblem. They have like ten, it's a super popular series in Japan. And people who aren't into the series have complained a lot about how many Generic Sword Guy characters there are, which the Byleth trailer nods at with the "too many swordsmen?" line. Yeah Sonic coming to Smash Brawl was a *huge* surprise, especially since it came two weeks after Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games was announced, because everyone assumed that meant he *wasn't* in Brawl because if he was coming to Brawl surely they would've announced that first?! You gotta find that trailer because it still gives me chills 18 years later. Sephiroth was one of the later DLC fighters and everyone *LOST THEIR SHIT* when the music hit. *Everybody* knows that music, or at least every terminally-online gamer does. Particularly since prior to this I don't think any non-Nintendo franchise had multiple characters, much less a non-Nintendo game, and Final Fantasy 7 already had Cloud. The amazing thing about Ultimate is, while some characters are better than others, pretty much all of them are tournament-viable; while there's several that don't show up often at the top ends of tournaments, they still sometimes take games or sets off good players, they're just lacking a good enough player to make them consistent. And yeah, Pyra/Mythra are kinda cool, although not unprecedented in Smash -- Zelda and Sheik were like that in Smash Melee, although you mostly wouldn't know it because people who play them spend 99.9% of their time as Sheik, only switching to Zelda occasionally for her up-B recovery move (and then usually dying before they can switch back.) Sakurai isn't just a fighting game fan; he's also pretty good. In fact, when Smash Melee came out, he (of course) had the record on some of the Break the Targets stages, as shown in some of the trailers where he used his own console to show off the mode -- and one of those records lasted for a couple years after release! At 50:05 yeah, this was the announcement of the *final* DLC fighter -- no new updates after this -- so that's why it was a bit sad. And then they announced the character that won a poll for which character should be added to Brawl, only it hadn't happened because of lawyers, and everyone assumed it would *NEVER* happen because Disney lawyers are so notoriously protective of their IP. But somehow, Sakurai made it work. Maybe we should've known -- Sakurai's dev studio is named Sora, Ltd. after all... And yeah, Sephiroth was in the original Kingdom Hearts as a secret ultrahard boss and in Kingdom Hearts II as a main story boss. Kingdom Hearts is pretty much equal parts Final Fantasy and Disney. Which is another reason we thought no way Sora was getting in, not when Final Fantasy already had two characters! And yeah if you didn't figure it out from the Kazuya trailer, or the start of the World of Light, Kirby is Sakurai's favorite, because Kirby is Sakurai's own creation back in the 1990s, in addition to later creating the Smash series, which may be why Kirby was so good in Smash 64 -- sadly he then was one of the two worst characters in Melee as Sakurai perhaps tried too hard to avoid the favoritism allegations... I still play Kirby in Melee though, because it's not like I'm going to beat anyone with even the best characters, so I might as well play who I enjoy! (for context, the last time I played, I couldn't remember which button was grab and which was shield...) Cuphead is a costume for Mii Gunner. The bigger Mii Gunner costume reveal, however, that set the internet ablaze, was Sans Undertale. I joined an online tournament the day after that reveal -- there were 16 players, 5 were Sans, including both finalists. Pichu is a baby form of Pikachu from the second generation of Pokemon games. Mewtwo's final smash is Mega Mewtwo Y -- in the gen 6 pokemon games, pokemon could Mega Evolve during battle and they'd revert afterwards, and you could only Mega Evolve one pokemon per battle, so it was an interesting mechanic. Also the Y is because the two games were Pokemon X and Y and Mewtwo had different Mega Evolutions obtainable in the two games. Mega Evolutions were also in gen 7 before being dropped in gen 8/9, although they're coming back apparently in Pokémon Legends ZA, to be released I think this year. ...And I think I've seen the rest of these, and I've run out of attention span, so my comment ends here

I have tried playing smash ultimate with adult people unfamiliar with videogames and... it didn't work. Smash may seem very casual and easy to play but there are so many elements attached to it, that it can be overwhelming very fast. My friends didn't have fun. We changed to mario kart, and THEN everything clicked. I have been playing smash for most of my life. I feel it as an instinct, almost. It's kind of surprising to understand that it's actually quite hard for some people to grasp.

Ok yeah more comments since this is long. The green snake thing in story mode is Rayquaza. It's a legendary pokemon from the Hoenn region (Kyushu in southern Japan) and is generally viewed as the god of the upper atmosphere. Why it's in a random lake in this game is beyond me. What you referred to as "super saiyan" but are thinking of a giant ape form is actually the Great Ape form. It's different. Ridley was in this game as a boss but wouldn't be playable until Ultimate. That's why his splash screen said "Ridley hits the big time"T Captain Falcon skidded into a bunch of pikmin and killed them. That's why they have the little floaty things coming out--that's their souls. Sheik is from Zelda, yes. But...think about how this person could have gotten onto the ship. And where might Zelda have gone... Tabuu is a Smash original character and unfortunately we never really get any story about him(?). He makes a cameo near the end of Ultimate's story mode as a boss but the way Ultimate does bosses is weird since it's like someone else "playing" him (I don't remember who you actually fight but I *think* it was Bayonetta). For some reason, Toon Link, Jigglypuff, and Wolf didn't have a role in the story so they got their splash screens shoehorned in at the end.
