Over 7,000 Russian tourists stranded in Thailand as Ukraine war sanctions target Moscow

More than 7,000 Russian tourists are currently stuck in Thailand according to an estimate released March 22, 2022, by the Southeast Asian nation’s tourism authority. Thai officials said many of the Russians are struggling with cancelled flights, payment issues and currency exchange problems related to Western sanctions targeting their homeland over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Thailand’s government says it has proposed several alternative ways of getting stranded Russians home, including arranging repatriation flights or using airlines which have not yet suspended service to Russia.

Amongst the many problems include: 1. the language barrier 2. finding temporary employment to cover the daily expenses 3. deciding whether to stay in the expensive hotel/resort or find temporary housing somewhere else 4. setting up a temporary bank account with all the paperwork (carrying cash with you especially as a tourist would make you a huge target for pickpockets/robbers) 5. Healtcare costs, especially for medical emergencies in a foreign country 6. And if you had kids like some of these Russian tourists, what about their education?

These are no civilians coming from cities where bombs are falling everywhere, including hospitals, schools, and civilian shelters. These are not people that have had to leave 'everything'. Their life in a bag or suitcase to find security and shelter in Poland or another country. Yes ofcourse, Russians too are affected by war-criminal dictator Putin. But flight inconveniece is a far cry from people having to flee for their lives.

I am International lawyer and according to my experience I definitely sure that We need deeply analyze why war happened in Europe now. Geopolitical situation clearly demonstrates that Russia fear from NATO advancement in Eastern Europe and Ukraine is neighboring country for Russia which gives Russia and Collective Defense Treaty Organization (CDTO) a reason to worry about national and regional security and future existence of Russia and CDTO countries if NATO deploys own nuclear weapons and forces in Ukraine. Its NATO and Germany fail because they didn’t give security guarantee for Russia and rejected sigh treaty which will guarantee security for Russia and CDTO. Certainly any invading in independent country without respect to UN Charter is violation of International law and I support peace for Ukraine and I love people of Ukraine because Ukraine is like a brother for Kyrgyzstan. I hope that China and Turkey helps Russia and Ukraine settle their disputes and this war will stop. I just hope that global community’s efforts will give great results and this war will stop and people of Ukraine 🇺🇦 will continue living in peaceful and happy country

CHINA and RUSSIA must finds ways to work around the US sanctions and develop systems that can benefit also other victims of US economic terrorism. One of the problems for the Russians stranded in Thailand is that they was refused access to their money by Visa/MasterCard in the middle of their vacation due to the sanctions. The majority of all tourists who goes to Thailand comes from China and Russia (2019 numbers) it should be in everyone's interest to have ATM accepting Russian MIR and Chinese UNION cards. These two cards should be offered as Debit Cards world-wide since many nations is victims of US bullying. Start with Thailand, Turkey, Venezuela, Iran and other countries who have many Russian and Chinese travelers. It puzzles me why not more have been done to get out of the grip of the US global bully. Both China and Russia have commercial airplanes but for some reason they do not prioritize to mass produce the planes despite the huge demand. Sad to see all these easy money instead goes into the hands of the US war machine. China must stop being nice to the US. Bring Chinese funds back and invested it in Asia. Asia is where the growth will be. In the US/West there is a high risk China can get into the same problems as Russia and get their assets confiscated.

@@melxdiq842 Both Ukraine and Taiwan are democratic countries. If they really wanted to join with Russia and China they could vote in governments to make it happen. They have not done this. Ukraine had a popular revolt just because the government wanted to build closer ties with Moscow and not the EU. Taiwan has two political parties that want to reunify with China under CCP leadership and both do very poorly with the voters, especially after what happened to Hong Kong. I really cannot understand the thinking that Ukraine belongs more to Russians who have never even been to Ukraine to then people living in Ukraine. As I cannot understand the thinking that Taiwan belongs more to Chinese who have never even been to Taiwan then the people living in Taiwan.

These tourists' predicament is a lesson in global currency order wherein currencies and world commodities are peg in U.S. dollars. I think gradual de-dollarization and strengthening of their local currencies will be the best choice for the world.
