Pope Francis wrapped up his visit to Indonesia by celebrating Catholic Mass with more than 80,000 people at the country's national stadium on September 5, 2024. The 87-year-old pontiff spent four days in the world`s most populous Muslim-majority nation. Francis will next stop in Papua New Guinea before continuing his 12-day tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania with visits to East Timor and Singapore.

Not really, because according to them what they believe is 'real Islam', we would categorise that as 'religious fundamentalism'. The point is there have been tremendous acts of violence carried out in the name of Islam and which the moderate Moslems have sometimes failed to speak out against. So it is not simple as blaming the person when there can be some things in a religion or ideology that promotes or justifies violence. Now the same can be said for some things written in the Old Testament Scriptures, but this is outright condemned by the Catholic Church. So this condemnation of extremism must increase in the Moslem world.

I think we the West, should look up to Indonesia as an example of harmony between religions is possible. The fact that there are even muslim organisation that willingly provide security during the whole Pope visits, speaks volume. Having a Grand Imam kissing his head, then the Pope responded with holding his hand is a historic view in itself. Lets just the Indonesian muslim is a different breeds than the muslim from other countries. Even the Pope said himself, Indonesia people are smiley people. In PH, it is not common to declare or indicate the religion. Most forms from government and private sectors have no item for religion. If we leave it blank, it is okay. No questions asked. As an insight, when I visited Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali before pandemic, I’ve befriended some Indonesians. I was surprised that a few of them asked about my religion. In the Philippines, we never ask foreigners or tourists about religion and even among Filipinos, it’s too personal if someone asks about his/her religion. 😊
