With all due respects, Indonesia’s Catholic population constitutes 3% of the total population or overall Christianity Community (Catholic and Christian Protestantism) in Indonesia is approximately 10%, which translates to approximately 30 million people, scattered all over Indonesia. However, it is not a small number to be underestimated. The Christianity community in Indonesia surpasses the entire population of Singapore, Portugal, or Netherlands, and it is approximately equal to the entire population of Malaysia (34 milion). It’s no wonder that Pope Francis was warmly received in Indonesia. Furthermore, it is important to emphasize that Indonesia is a secular nation, not an Islamic state, despite the dominant presence of the Islamic community. Indonesia’s national motto, Pancasila, serves as a powerful foundation for our diverse nation. It encapsulates the principles of unity, justice, democracy, and religious harmony. Therefore, The Indonesian Government officially recognizes six major religions: Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and indigenous local beliefs. Thank you Papa for graciously accepting the invitation to visit our country. May God bless all of us. Indonesia is very diverse with 1,340 ethnic groups, 718 local languages, and 6 official religions. So Indonesia need tolerance action and interfaith dialogue to prevent conflict and reduce extremist violence. Meanwhile, Jakarta is sinking due to climate change. Then the Indonesian government is building a new capital city of the Nusantara in the middle of the forest of Kalimantan Island. The issue of climate change and deforestation becomes a challenge in the future of Indonesia.

I think our Pope is so heartwarming...but when the blessing was given after his speech...the reporter said he didn't make the sign of the cross after his blessing because he was in mixed religions that broke my heart. Small is relative. Indonesian catholics are indeed a small minority here, three percent of the total population. But, Indonesia is also the world’s fourth most populated country on earth. There are over 200 million people living here. So, there are literally millions of Catholics here.

3% indeed a very small number out of over 270 millions but when it comes to the practising their religious faith it does not comparable anywhere in Europe or America where churches is always empty and Christmas and Easter you'll find majoiry of those who called themselves Christian spending time buying presents, gifts and spent more time in Pubs drinking beer than in the church. And also a lots of European Christian do not know what Christmas is for or what Easter is for..... which is very, very, very sad.. I said this base on facts as I lived in Europe for over 20 years now... My country East Timor is small country with small population but majority are Catholic almost 95 %.. every Sunday mass every churches in East Timor even to the remote areas always full of people sometimes you have to get here earlier to get inside the church as if not you will only stand outside but the people never neglected their faith and responsibility as a Christian to do what Christ asked Christian to do... So yeah 3% in Indonesia, 99% out just over 1 millions in East Timor but churches is always full and we celebrate Christmas after church and we celebrate Easter with sorrow before the Sunday Resurrection or Sunday Hallelujah we follow the true meaning of this two big celebration that everyone who claimed themselves as Christian should do. Thank you very much... Hope the European awakes themselves back in to reality of what is the true meaning of be a Christian as a Christ followers.

It is not small. If you consider with 270 million of people yes, but if you compare to the whole Asia, Indonesia has the third number of Catholics, below China and Philippines. Please please, never see moslem in Indonesia like moslem in middle east. There are, i mean it, a lot of difference. Since Indonesia, dominantly javanese, has high cultural value before the abrahamic religion come to the island and later, the spreading, both Islam & Christian in Indonesia were using acculturation. So you will find Islam in Indonesia with special value, especially high tolerant value toward other belief. Its common in java and other island to have multi religion in one nuclear family, yet the big family. We had national motto Bhinneka Tungal Ika, words from sanskrit, meaning Different (yet) still One. Its created when Indonesia still ruled by Hindu & Buddhist Kingdom and the word for issue regarding both religion coexist in the kingdoms. Later the motto adopted to the new Republic of Indonesia, with the spirit that this nation, yes mostly moslem, but still had many other religion, thousand of etnicity and hundred language. We are different, but we still one nation.
