One of my pet peeves is when I go online to share photos or videos of something, only to have that one know-it-all chime in, doling out advice that you never asked for. They just assume that everybody that crosses their path is a novice, and they should be grateful that this seasoned veteran is here to grace you with their knowledge. 😧

IKR, when the post is about something like “what kind of lettuce is your snail’s favorite” with a picture of a snail with no context about the tank and a know-it-all chimes in about a small fish in the background of the photo “your tank is too small for that fish, it needs at least 40 gallons, rehome it NOW” and then the tank of the person posting ends up being like 125 gallons

Yes 😂. I joined a beginners facebook group and oh my goodness, people were soo rude, considering that it was supposed to be a place to share ideas and ask questions. People were posting pictures of their tanks that they were all proud of and getting absolutely slated by snobs who thought their perfectly manicured aquascapes with more greenery than anything else we the only way. I left the group when they were making jokes at the expense of people with SpongeBob decs and calling them tacky! Mine has SpongeBob to please my 8 year old kid fml😮. I swear they were disgusted by anything the fish wouldn’t have in their “natural environment”… ummm… I suspect none of the fish actually have a clue what their habitat looks like 😊

I am lazy, but I honestly find the weekly water change/minor cleaning do be kinda relaxing. 10-15 minutes out of a day off where I might spend most of it gaming to keep everything happy in the tank is pleasant. It keeps the tank pleasant to look at if I decide to just relax there instead of in front of a screen. However, I don't have a huge number of tanks (pretty much only 1 active with some other stuff around for quarantine), so it lets me focus my attention on one tank.
@MontrealMusiciansExchange3 жыл бұрын
No doubt, it is therapeutic in many ways. When you think about it - you’re a bit like a prison guard; unless you change the water and feed these fish, they will die. They are COMPLETELY DEPENDENT on you not being lazy and getting it DONE!!

This reminded me of a really silly mistake I did years ago 🤦🏼♀️ I’m still working at a pet store but years ago I had been there for about 2 years at that point and we were moving the fish around to different tanks in our fish area (my favourite section) I was moving a large amount of white cloud minnows, I was catching them and putting them into a little plastic bucket thing that hooks onto the side of the big tanks then tipping that little bucket into the new tank, while loading the little bucket up with fish a customer came up to me to ask for help and stupidly I walked away leaving the danios in the bucket, a few hours later after helping a few different customers I came back to the danios and they had began jumping out of the little bucket onto the floor! I panicked and started to try pick up the multiple danios flopping around on the floor. I was horrified they fish where jumping out! All I can guess is I left them for to long in the little bucket and the oxygen levels where to low with so many fish and they just leaped for it, It’ll never ever let myself be distracted and leave a fish in a terrible position again I also have over flooded a few tanks too because I was distracted 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

I was looking for this comment. I knew someone else would know about these amazing gadgets. There are also water sensors meant for alerting you to a water leak under a sink that can then be plugged into a home automation system. Then there are also gadgets that you can place on a water shut-off valve. So, if anywhere in your house one of the sensors gets wet all the water will shut off.

Working at petco as an aquatic specialist under the guidance of a really intelligent dude who has been there for 17 years. He basically knows everything about fish even with no formal education. My store manager on the other hand is not so bright. We have to fill the salt water sumps everyday. For some reason the store manager decided to fill them in the morning and forgot about it. He ended up over filling the sumps and completely messing up the salinity. He could have killed thousands of dollars worth of fish, but luckily only two $50 anemones died. Still sucks, but it could have been way worse.

My heater and I are low key frenemies, it works wonderfully and I’ve never had it go out on me, but I have forgotten to unplug it while water changing multiple times. One time it melted through the plastic holders and my room smelled like burnt plastic for a week, I had to scrub the glass around it and the ornaments as well as do an extra water change to make sure no plastic toxins got in the water. My heater now has a black patch of hardened plastic chilling on it that won’t scrub off. To keep from over filling your tanks you can get a sensor that will sound an alarm. Its actually meant for basements but you just binder clip the little sensor to your aquarium and as soon as water touches it, it goes off... You are right, if one cannot afford to be lazy at work, he shouldn’t be lazy for his hobby, whether it is fish or gardening or anything.

I have yet to over fill a tank. Yet, I have flooded the bathroom around 3 to 4 times. Our sink has a hard time keeping up with the Python.

Haha! I’m a new hobbyist but have been using the KISS method all my life - never thought to apply it here! Thanks for the tip :-). Thanks for all your amazing videos too, while I’m at it.

mixing fish with fish that no like each other is a beginner mistake i've done, i've never brought meds or quarantined my fish and when i impulsively buy a fish, i ask the shop owner if it is compatible with my fish at home... i have no regrets lol (i impulsively brought a fish tank and everything i needed for it to function just so i could get a fish i loved at first sight)

Can female Bettas become eggbound? I can't find a solid answer on it. My female has been doing the egg thing for a while, but now shes acting very sick and lethargic, but doesn't really have any of the visible symptoms that show up for Betta illnesses. Params are stable and have been the same for a while. The other fish in the tank (corys and neon tetras, yes they get along :-) ) are doing fine. I'm worried about her.
