I'd say it isn't cheap but for some regions, an overnight battery backup connected to a solar panel could work too, but that would really work better for areas that get a lot of sunlight.

I have had my fair share of fish die on me. Something that I just come to accept is that fish will die on you no matter how much you try to keep them healthy. You can give them a nice planted tank with warm water, feed them the highest quality food, and have the most pristine water parameters in the world but fish are gonna die on you. I’ve lost guppies, Cory Dora’s, and harlequin Rasboras. This morning my albino Cory Dora that was perfectly healthy for years and a month ago my thick lipped gold gourami that I had for only three months then died. When fish die I return their body to the earth and put them in my plants.

I really like my little tiger barbs they don't bother the other fish although I will say the larger tiger barb that passed away recently did harass the fish non-stop so I would definitely not recommend them but I think the small ones are okay when you get them very small and they grow up with the other fish. Thank you

Hey John and Lisa, I don’t know if you guys respond to comments but I was wondering if you think adding 6 pepper corys to a 20 high with 6 guppies and a dwarf gourami would be overstocking? I think they’re really cute but I don’t want to buy them to the detriment of my other fish.

So, if you DID buy too many fish at once, what should you do to diffuse the bomb? More water changes? Add bacteria from a bottle? I have an established 15 gallon tank that had 3 big angel fish. I moved them to a bigger home. The only fish left in the tank were 3 corys. I bought 3 tiny corys and 3 danios at once. Any advice on diffusing the bomb?

Our house is on the same power grid as one of the local police stations, which is about a half mile from us. Seems like every time there's a power issue, the entire neighborhood around us can go down and our street will be completely unaffected 😂

Thank you for these… CO2 generator… is that sugar and yeast or Soda and citric acid? Sugar and yeast is slow, hard to manage but can be done in sparkling water bottles… Citric acid is more instand and can be speeded up or stopped for the nighttime but trickier to do DIY rout…

A good video but, I think you had to cover equipment failure too as that will happen to everyone who stay in the hobby for couple years or more. This is a big one too For electricity: I’m not in a flat so I can park my car near by. I have a 12dc to 220ac converter (in Europe, for you it would be 110ac). I plug that in car, extension lead to the filter and I can run like that with hour car off, 30min car running … but this is for short outages… not a solution for 24hrs…

I got a stand by generator in 2017, it has been a lifesaver for my fish!! Yes it was a few thousand dollars but worth every penny. I have multiple tanks. We have ice storms in Maine and can lose power for days, so this was an investment for me. No regrets.

I have a new (to me) 50-gal freshwater tank that I re-sealed. I let it run with a bit of the old water from my previous 35-gal tank. I realize that I should have kept the biofilter from that tank, but I didn’t. I let the new tank run for about two weeks. I then added the fish from the old tank to the new one, with driftwood and some live plants. At this point the tank has been running for 3-4 weeks. After adding the first small group of fish, I waited about a week.! All was well - no big chemical changes nor dead fish. I kept adding live plants when I added a new small group of fish. I did this for about four weeks. I saw my ammonia levels rise, my nitrites rise, and eventually my nitrates rise. Currently all three levels are still elevated and it’s been almost three months. I’ve been doing 30% water changes 2-4 times per week. Please help. Thanks!

I have gravel but I was thinking about putting either Fluval Stratum or aqueon substrate in it instead or go half gravel half on the other depends on which is better between the Fluval Stratum and aqueon substrate. Cause I like to put plants in the tank. I know that you recommend gravel but I just wanted to know if I can do either Fluval Stratum or aqueon substrate which ever is best or go half and half with a divider. Great vid! Very valuable info! A tip I can give on keeping tanks warm is to get yourself a box of hand warmers called Hot Hands. Open up some packs of those and place around the sides of the tanks and cover the tanks with towels or blankets to retain that heat. Check the temperature periodically. It totally works and has kept my fish comfortable during a power outage in one of the “winter” months (I put winter in “” quotes because this is Southern California lol).

I live in an area where the water is heavily treated with chlorine. You can smell it when you just run the tap. Can I change out half a tank of water without hurting my fish if I treat the water while re-filling the tank? Or should I treat water in a separate tub, then fill my tank with the treated water?

Outcomes vary, all saved except for the fin rot case. (only stopped fin rot temporarily).

I have the meds but I’m not sure when to use which medicine. I recently bought some fish from a pet store, I had been looking for these fish for a long time. I brought them home and they were fine for a week. Then they started dropping. I didn’t know why, but I treated them with various things to try to stop the carnage. I lost 13 fish and I’m still holding my breath. It makes me so sad to loose fish. Thank god for a quarantine tank, it could have been so much worse. My question is, what’s the first thing you do when you see your fish acting weird? And can u treat a planted tank with salt? There’s just so many things I’m not sure of. Love the video, cause I learn so much. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it’s appreciated.

The best thing is to have a quarantine aquarium. If you buy new fish from the dealer, keep the new fish in quarantine for at least two weeks. If they have shown no illness by then it should be fine to move them to the major aquarium. If the fish should start acting weird the first thing I do is do a massive water change. If it doesn’t help I’ll may add some salt and raise the temperature a bit. I haven’t had any medics for ages and haven’t had the need either.

@@bonniegoodwin5653 To a very wide degree yes. It’s not like you’re turning the aquarium into a saltwater one. It’s only a slight touch of salt into the aquarium, like one gram per liter.

Wth a seasoned aquarium medics aren’t neccessary. I haven’t bought medicine for ages, and I havent experienced any diseases either. Unless you’re talking of very juvenile fish, they can easily go for two weeks without feeding.

@@kasperkjrsgaard1447 yep, not sure. It’s just my female bettas. I got them from the same batch. I don’t know why they have had issues. All my other fish in the aquarium look great. Very healthy. And while I was gone, I guess the cats somehow unplugged the pump and my husband just didn’t notice it right away. My hubby has never really kept pets. I am in charge of that, in general. and yes, I really didn’t allow him to feed them while I was gone. My instructions were: 2 small pinches for the 55 and 40G and just a finger tip for my 20 and 10 gallons. someone mentioned my other fish might be healthy but the female betas might be having problems because my pH was too high and it WAS a bit high. It was like 8.2. I do believe some people have more of a knack for things, so congratulations.

I've said it before. I'm saying it now... and I'll probably say it in the future. Generators are life changing. I bit the bullet a couple years ago and hired an electrician to change out my breaker box to be more modern. While he was at it, I had him set it up for a generator to plug into. Was it expensive? Yes, yes it was. Has it removed a mountain of anxiety from my shoulders every time the skies turn grey? YEP!!! I'd say it's the second smartest thing I've ever done in the fish room. The first being the Python - the single greatest invention in the hobby.

@@Sean3D2Y That's the trouble with battery backup. They don't last long. We've lost power for days at a time. Without the generator, the basement would have been flooded (because the sump pumps aren't working either) and the fish would be dead. The battery backup stuff is nice for short term events though, for sure.
