The black stuff is smelting slag. I'm surprised you haven't seen it before....fairly common on the goldfields.The Lady Nelson is a very famous ship, one of the survey vessels responsible for discovery and mapping of the Australian continent. 2 replicas exist, one static at Mt Gambier and the other is sea-worthy. The souvenir belt buckles can still be bought new in Mt Gambier today.

Ive had smelting slag a fair few times and funny enough one had gold. Ahh cool cool, yeah I thought it was S.A for Nelson. Pretty sure ive visited it some time over my travels.
