Over the garage door wood storage shelves. Good use of a lot of unused space you would normally not use.
Idea inspired by Jay Bates check out his build • Garage Storage Shelves...
Each shelf is 4' x 8" and supported against one wall and the ceiling.
Ceiling supports secured directly into the above joists.

I got too much weight to be using drywall brackets lol I'll lag my 2×4s also bolting my arms with a metal bracket. Great job tho dude.

Very nice video of all the ones I've looked at for inspiration for this type of project yours seems to be the cleanest install. I like the fact you took into account shelf sag and some extra security without the need to use janky metal plates etc. I do believe I'll be copying pretty closely to this on my project!

Code 3 Imagination It doesn’t happen often. I’ve only had to replace mine twice during the 16 years I’ve owned the house. Each new spring has lasted me about 6-8 years before needing replacement.

@@smileywarrior1870 you must open and close your door a lot. I live in the house I grew up in and my parents bought it in 1984, and I replaced the whole door with all new components probably 5 years ago but the original door still had original hardware too

Hello - Looks good. Getting ready to do this over all 3 garage doors. When building the left and right shelf brackets, why did you attach a small 2x2 block to the longer length 2x2 bracket that is attached to the ceiling on both sides? You dont mention it in the video and I dont see an area where you had to build it out from the wall. Why did you decide to bring out the 2x4 back support bracket from the back wall? What is the length of the small 2x2 block attacked to the longer 2x2? Thanks

Great video but I don’t get the point of hollow wall anchors. If the screwed board between two joists fails, a drywall is not going to hold it. These anchors are an unnecessary weak link that will never carry a load, in my opinion. Thought?
@code3imagination441
@code3imagination441 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Like I stated it was overkill. I have a box full of them so I used them. The only thing it is really doing is keeling the board right to the wall. If the shelf fails it will be taking the entire wall down with it.

I like your ideas and videos. How much weight do you think your shelf can safely hold? I'm thinking about doing the same thing, however I want to make sure it will hold the weight I plan to put up there so it does not fall onto my wife's car. I don't want to have to put a beam in.

I don't know off the top of my head. Would have to go back and do the math. Now don't quote me on this without checking. But you can google then strength of a structure by the type of fasteners and how many and where they are placed. I can tell you the shelfs in this video have held my weight (210 pounds). They currently hold(well during the winter time) five child sized bikes, Motor scooter, a dozen bag chairs, baseball equipment(bag of balls half dozen bats) Adult hockey equipment, Several totes full of summer toys Several lawn chairs Now the other shelfs I build in the next video hold a ton of weight. They have held: Large trampoline Several(3) totes of tools weighing about 20-50 bounds each Miter saw Scroll saw Power planer Band saw Multiple sanders Dozen hand power tools

I know this is a stupid question but do you think it's okay if I cut away some of the drywall to make sure I'm screwing into a beam? I mean after all, this will be over our heads holding God only knows how much weight...

Rick Dang It took me three days but a total of 10 hours of work, a couple of disagreements between my kids, a doze snacks, and a few bottles of water later finished. Once I hade my plan made it went fairly smoothly putting this up. I took one day to design and get materials, another few hours to prep and cut everything and the third to install it all. Now I could have rushed and gotten it done in one day but I was in no hurry.

Does this work with I-Joists? Explain what is different.
@code3imagination441
@code3imagination441 2 жыл бұрын
Am I-joist is an engineered wood joist. Laminated wood sandwiched between two solid pieces of lumber. Dimensions can very depending on load and building code. You would have to find out if the I joints you have are capable of carrying an extra load. That I could not tell you, different I-joints carry different loads. Not sure if that answers your question.

Hi - I'm Nick and I store my shit in the garage attic - jk lol I did shelves like what you did on the sides of the garage because I got tired of holiday crap smelling like a ... well like the garage attic lol - gets really hot up there - I have not however put a shelf above the garage door - So I'm using your guide to help me get it done. Did you use birch plywood sir? I got a couple 4'x8' sheets of birch ply = corners are dinged up - was in the 70% off section at Home Depot. Normally they are 50 bucks! If anyone is looking to save a few bucks - material cost is where you can do it at! For the hangers and frame, you can probably even get away with using pallets and skipping the sheets of plywood. Anyway if I'm wrong let me know! Just thinking out loud and writing down ideas!!! -- Thoughts on the pallet Idea anyone?
@code3imagination441
@code3imagination441 7 жыл бұрын
I am sure the birch ply will work the same. I used the cheaper stuff in this video. The pallet idea is a good one. I have been using more reclaimed pallet wood when I can in my projects. My suggestion would be to make sure they are not rotten or split. Most pallets are made of oak or another type of hard wood.

Why did you not want to go over the garage door opener? I wouldnt imagine it would come in contact with it once you opne the garage door
@javaman2883
@javaman2883 Жыл бұрын
Because the garage door opener and center rail sits above where the garage door moves on its racks, some models are up to 9 inches above. When you only have like 26 inches of space up there, losing 9 is a big deal.

1st, There is no ledger board above the garage door. It is a header, not ledger. 2nd. the ROOF trusses above the garage are engineered pieces designed to support the roof ONLY. The engineering does not take into account adding flooring weight when designed. You have voided any type of structural warranty. 3rd. For the price of a 2x4, why would you go cheap with a 2x2 on the ledger you attached? You gave up more than half the weight bearing strength of that ledger with the small board and screws At the very least you should have used a full 2x4 and LedgerLok structural screws for that installation. 4th. Using the toggle bolts almost guarantees that all the drywall will be ruined if there is a failure of any type.
@code3imagination441

Steve Stanczyk Header - That is totally correct I mixed up the two terms, ledger and header. Thanks for the correction. I do not have roof trusses above that part of the garage. There are joists above the garage, have a room above it. I consulted the construction manager at the time of my home being built about if the joists could hold the extra weight. No problem there. Consulted with a friend who has a construction company about using the 2x2 instead of the 2x4. He informed me what what I would be storing the 2x2 would be good enough for this type of build. Toggle bolts - like I stated in the video. “Over kill” if the shelf does fail the least of my worries is damaged dry wall. Thanks for watching and commenting. I totally appreciate the correction.
