My opinion on whether someone should drive trucks over the road or locally.

"First year is hell..." This is something that needs to be told to everyone entertaining the industry: your first year will be a nightmare. Then it gets infinitely better, and you'll probably love it.

5:50 "A Day Cab" Day cab :- A day cab truck is a commercial truck that is used to tow a variety of trailers. The name “day cab truck” refers to the fact that it does not contain a sleeper cabin. For Rookies and Limeys.

Nicely done. Over the road has lost its mystique for sure. Mostly just a place for sweatpants wearing steering wheel holders. If I got back into trucking local is where it's at. I have a family and want to provide but also be with them too. Nice to see you back making vids!

Autocar87 You got that right ! His opinions are facts I wouldn’t touch otr ever. And forget about food warehouses !

Great video,I was the same way never went to a driving school,learned from dad,but mostly when I did start driving for the first couple years I kept my mouth shut and my ears open,you'd be amazed how much you can learn by listening to some of these old hands,I tried local couple times but I'm single so there's no since in being home everyday.

I got lucky,got my cdl and 2 weeks later I was learning to drive concrete mixer.good money,even right off the bat.really good benefits.Now full on mixer driver,at great company.One way to know that you are at a good company when there are good number of guys that have long time there.There is a reason,cause they are getting treated right.Mixer companies can never get enough drivers,They usually pay well.thats my 2 cents anyway!!

Great video...I was fortunate to start out local,have always been a "day tripper"....I've thought about maybe going OTR for a year just to experience it,but that wouldn't be until 5 and half years from now when my son graduates from high school...stay safe,stay warm and have a good one.

Diving for a construction company or related type of work, I always enjoyed the most. Hauling concrete block, or concrete pipe & structures was my favorite jobs as well as dumps.

These days, being an owner/operator or a dispatcher are probably the two best ways to be successful in the trucking industry. It's a shame trucking isn't what it used to be, especially with the government cracking down on emissions and ELD's now. I can only imagine what it was like back in the 70's when trucking was in its heyday and there were REAL trucks and drivers on the road instead of these new plastic automatics being driven by steering wheel holders. I've always said I would become an OTR driver if my college career fell through...as tough of a job as it can be nowadays, SOMEONE has to deliver our goods. Without truckers, America stops. Thanks for doing what you do Boston Trucker, and thanks for the video.

I will agree with your Local is the way to go I’m also from Boston I’ve been driving local for the last 13 years but I am sick and tired of the snow and cold weather and life expense Everything you said is nice but you forgot to mention the traffic I would like you to tell us when you travel in the daytime on 93 or route 24 or 95 or route 3 anywhere in Boston And compare that to a guy driving on 20 or 10 south side of the country. over the road guy do 10 hours but when you finish your 12 hours you are a dead man don’t tell me you go and you see your family because when you get home you are Exhausted And you don’t have time for no one
@TheBostonTrucker6 жыл бұрын
Samir Alghazi Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. It's tough in this area day in and day out always on the defence against rude drivers and bad weather.

Very enjoyable video. Your perspective on both types of trucking is spot on. OTR nowadays is slave labor for any newbie. Level of skill is non existent. Most big carriers dont give a rats ass about the person behind the wheel. Dispatchers go to lying 101 school. Local if you can. Jmho

When I first got my license I got a job driving local strait truck got tired of that wanted to drive trailer but no experience so I took a job in Tennessee driving over the road did that for 4 months not for me I came home my uncle got me a job with his trucking company doing dump trailer and that was my way into driving trailer for I think it's about 25 years now

All depends where you live i think local is better per hour is better plus over the road don't pay enough u make that local. Im in nj so we got ports ny mad jobs. There are many jobs this man right door to door with resume in hand there are mad jobs. After you get experience you tell em no lifting no hand trick no overnights this pay or not interested

Can you go straight out of trucking school local?
@TheBostonTrucker6 жыл бұрын
Yes you can.
@el-hp1lj5 жыл бұрын
yes. I did back in 2004 u just need to get lucky. I work for a local place in nj hauling boxes and packaging and we were hurting so bad for drivers they hired a guy right out of school. they babied him a few months tho because they new he was a risk. so if u want to avoid going over the road just knock on some doors, preferably smaller places. big places like fed ex, ups,etc will never hire without expereince

I’d rather work 12hrs a day with overtime & weekends off. I don’t care what the truck looks like as long as the a/c and radio work.
